Smart not sad
The father-in-law planted them in the garden about 10 years ago. They grow like mental. X)
planting seeds 4ft in the ground.
If you grow tomato plants 6 foot high (or 5 foot with 1 foot of cane in the ground) your doing something very wrong Pinch out the new shoots after they reach 4 trusses (branches) high and you will get much better fruit.
Regarding these canes, all the pound shops have had them and like always get them quick or just the rubbish spindly ones will be left.
I also grow Bamboo in the garden, planted a smallish clump, about 2 foot square a few years ago and now its 10+ foot square and i cut down about 50x 10 foot canes a year out of it, to make 100x 5 footers.
I use grafted tomato plants but even if I didn't 3 foot is still a little short for 4 trusses in my opinion: If you use a four foot cane, only 3 foot of it sticks up above the ground. I'm also aware of pinching out the top at 4 trusses on a regular plant and pinching off side shoots having grown tomato's for 20 years, thanks for the tips anyway.
