Let's clear this up. It's not talk mobile, it's talk home mobile (clearly not in any way designed to confuse which in itself is reason to be cautious) , from their terms:
The Talk Home Mobile is a mobile network virtual operator(MVNO) powered by the EE network, one of the fastest networks with the broadest coverage across the UK. So, you can use Talk Home Mobile almost anywhere in the UK with the EE network coverage.

I don't think there was anything malicious in the naming. Talk Home was originally just a calling card company but now they've expanded into being an MVNO, so they just shoved "Mobile" to the end of their name.

    SIM arrived this morning.
Activated fine in iPhone, and the online account updated to show today as activation date.

Wifi-calling was off under Mobile Data, but it let me turn it back On.
Just need to "roam" to somewhere that has 5G and run a speedtest before I request PAC and bin off SkyMobile. (edited)

I didn’t think they supported Wi-Fi Calling? Are you able to test if it works? (Make a call in airplane mode?)

The "PENNY PRO" plan is an interesting one for super low usage - 1p per minute/sms/mb

I cant see anything where it says you have to top up a minimum amount every 90/180 days, just make a "chargeable event" every 90 days - ie actually use it.

I'm going to get one of these 4gb for 3 months deals but might get one of the other ones or contact CS to see if it's possible to downgrade the sim to that after 3 months.

    a) If, after your SIM Card becomes Active, you do not make a Chargeable Event in any consecutive period of 90 days, then we will Restrict your SIM Card, meaning that you will be unable to make outbound calls nor use data but you will be able to receive inbound calls, send and receive SMS and USSD will operate. To get us to remove the Restriction you must top-up your Account. If you get the Restriction removed, any credit or Allowances recorded against your Account will again become available to you for use and your SIM Card will be fully Active again.

    b) If, after the date your SIM Card becomes Restricted, you do not get the Restriction removed in the following period of 90 days, then we will Suspend your SIM Card, meaning that you will be unable to make or receive calls, send or receive SMS nor use data but USSD will operate and you will be able to telephone Customer Services and make Top-Ups. To get us to remove the Suspension you must top-up your Account. If you get the Suspension removed, any credit or Allowances recorded against your Account will again become available to you for use and your SIM Card will be fully Active again.

    c) If, after the date your SIM Card becomes Suspended, you do not get the Suspension removed in the following period of 180 days, then we will Expire your SIM Card, meaning that the SIM Card and your mobile phone number can no longer be used by you and you will not be entitled to a refund of any unused credit.

    d) However, if you intend to be outside the United Kingdom and so not using your SIM Card for a long period, we may, at our discretion, agree to extend the Suspension of your SIM Card by a further 180 days (and we will not Expire your SIM Card until the end of that second period of 180 days); to request such an extension, you must telephone Customer Services prior to your departure from the United Kingdom and your SIM Card must be Active at that time.

My Nan was on this plan but it turns out you have to manually activate the Penny Pro plan every 30 days or else you end up on the more expensive standard PAYG rates. In the end she switched to 1p Mobile as it is hassle free.

Finally got my SIM card after a 10 day wait...

Tried it side by side with my EE SIM card in a dual SIM 5G phone .

Tested 3 times each using the Speedtest app, in 2 different locations..at home and then approx 10 miles away.

    EE - average download speed - 165 Mbps ( 6 tests)

    Talk Home - average download speed - 17 Mbps! ( 6 tests)

Probably the worst comparative data download speed I've experienced from an MVNO versus the network they operate on.

Hope others are having better experiences....

Speeds hasn't been great but decent around the 17mbps mark apart from once I got 100+Mbps when I was near a tower.

I can manage to make WhatsApp voice calls and watch 1080p YouTube videos most of the time without any issues.

Only annoyance is that lack of volte means it goes to 3g when making a voice call thereby blocking any data access on the phone.

When 3g services are switched off - which the operators are going to do shortly not sure if the phone will use 2g spectrum instead thereby leading to inferior quality calls as compared to the 4g/5g calls that the VOLTE supporting networks will provide.

Just had an email from Talk Home saying they have changed their terms and that you need to cancel the subscription by 13 June to opt out. Notably, the terms say new users 'commit to be a Talk Home customer for at least 12 months' and, if you cancel earlier, you have to pay them the remainder of the money you would have over the rest of that 12 months! Maybe still fairly cheap overall, but quite sly and enough to put many off I guess.

Thanks for pointing that out as I'd have missed it completely!

It's one thing tweaking the t&s's a bit, its another to suddenly lock you in for 12 months when you sign up for 3, without even listing it front and centre and hiding it behind a link that most wouldn't click through.

That's particularly underhanded way of doing things - I was pondering letting my sim continue to run after the initial 3 month period but will be getting in touch to make sure that doesn't happen - I want a rolling 30 day setup. I'm happy to be locked in whilst there's a great promo period but after that, nope!

I'm guessing they've done the same on the 3gb, 6 month one

Good non-eu and good eu roaming too! This looks similar to the nowmobile website? Think they own rwg too by the looks of it.

You are on the right lines.

NowTel owns both Talk Home and Now Mobile.
But RWG just uses Now Mobile as the provider of its service (I don't think NowTel owns RWG).

About 10 years ago I used a Talk Home Mobile SIM and it suddenly got barred after a couple of days. The reason they gave for barring was something like I had called 3 different countries and nobody knows people in so many countries. Make of that what you will.

Take note of the following terms:

"By entering into this Agreement, you commit to be a Talk Home customer for at least 12 months."

"After the first month of subscription, a [Cancellation] Charge is applicable equal to the cost of your plan multiplied by the number of remaining months (including the days remaining in a part-month)."

And the "100 international calling minutes are applicable to the USA only"

Mine have both arrived, finally! I put one in my second sim slot and ran a speed test - 170 vs the 30mbps for my Three sim!

I've not looked at my account or if there's an Android app - I'd free to find a way to quickly check how much data I've used.

Malik_34Is there a sim deal out there that may or may not offer as much but only charge approx about £2 every month instead of an offer time period of 3-6 months?? Thank you

Have you tried nowmobile they have a £2.50 plan 100 mins and texts and 1gb a month. Would be good for WhatsApp and a few calls. Cellular calls are better tbh as it’s separate from data. Not sure if now offer volte but they have 5g. It’s the same company that owns this lot but with slightly cheaper deals  (edited)

Whatch out! I was close to port in my personal phone number but luckily I took a second look to the small print. It turns out that the deal is for 3 months, the so called "100 international minutes" are only valid for USA phone numbers and what is worse after the first month (i.e. if you don't cancel the contract before) you have to stick with them for 12 months!!

As it is just a rolling 30 days, there is no reason why it shouldn't be the same as other networks (cancelled by using a PAC number transfer, or a STAC code to cancel the number completely).

Just to be safe I use a virtual card with a very small balance on it, but when ordering I see PayPal was also an option (favoured by some). (edited)

Looks like it’s capped or only certain 5g bands? Seems odd. Why use 5g when uncapped 4g would be faster? Or is it prioritisation? When lots of people are connected full fat EE get the speed first, then 1p mobile. Then the last of the bunch like now, talkhome and rwg get the dog crumbs as it was.

Speed not a problem for me but I done this for the tcb but it didn’t work. But at 3p not exactly an issue. But just to make sure did you reverse your sims around? Sometimes the second slot is only 4g or limited somehow. Did you try talkhome in the main slot? (edited)
    GeeeBeee's avatar
    GeeeBeee
Thanks for your thoughts. I agree it's only 3p but was hoping for a credible alternative to full fat EE. Might give 1p Mobile a go too.

Will try swapping the SIM cards around and see if that improves the dara speeds.

I don't like the line 'Upon exhaustion of the allowance limit(s) - calls, SMS and data will be charged on standard rates.' - sounds like if you use the 4GB data they'll just start charging you some exorbitant rate per MB! Not sure if they stop you using data, or as it sounds like - start charging you?

I dare say iPhones have something similar in settings, but I know on my android phone I can go to settings, then data usage, and then manually set either a warning message or a hard limit. Just make sure you put in your monthly data renewal date too.
