Review isn't glowing about it
Its only a good price compared to the RRP of the unit, but it is still over-priced for the specs compared to all the non-brand units (almost double the price). In order to pay that extra money there needs to be some guarantee of software stability and future support in terms of updates. Not sure if that is the case based on the review.

Don't think you can say this is "second only to the Shield" since the Shield is in a different league altogether (albeit at a much higher price).

For me, if you want a supported platform then a Fire Stick/TV would be better options at this price esp if you have Prime.

I was looking at this for Kodi, I already have an amazon 4k box that I'm really happy with and don't want to mess with it for kodi.. would prefer something I wouldn't care about bricking.. you think a cheaper generic box would be a better option?

I've got 2 of the latest Fire sticks and they are slow and apps keep crashing.

Bear in mind in will get Android 7 in Q1 this year, which will bring improvements.
my advice - Aliexpress - don't bother! bought a phone from them which died after four months, under their 'one year warranty' I was advised to send it to Germany for repair, which i did, they say they didn't receive it, and don't reply to any e-mails! AVOID at all costs!!!

If you know what you are doing around Android and Kodi then yes a cheaper generic box would be a better option as you can get the same spec for about £25-£30 nowadays. Only thing with the generic boxes is they they do not usually come with the Google Android TV skin (as the MI does), its usually their own skin which may or may not be good but if you are only going to use it for Kodi then its no biggie.

I'm kinda hoping that Xiaomi will release a higher spec box soon (a Premium version?), as I'm looking for something more powerful (and supported) than what I already have without having to go all the way up to the Shield.

OK that's good to know thanks. Not too sure what Google has added to Android TV in 7.0/7.1 but obviously all the other kernel upgrades will help.

You definitely won't brick your Fire installing Kodi with this guide!

Expense is relative.
The shield is costly (compared to this) but not expensive if use it regularly and for what it was built for.

Buy a USB Ethernet adaptor.

Edit:If you have 10Mbps internet to where you'll put the box you'll be fine streaming 4K anyway.

Netflix and Youtube aren't in the Play Store for generic boxes like that. (You can get them in Kodi though third-party).
the remote is so good on this! better than those cheap nasty android boxes.
I have this box. Love Mi products, but fairly unimpressed by this. Tried sideloading a chrome browser to it and to use the remote to speak into for a search and it kept finding videos on youtube. Anyone found a fix for this ? p.s using a usb ethernet adapter, but 5ghz wifi is very good. Hopefully an update will make it better, but for now its demoted to the home cinema room as a back up.

Really, unimpressed overall because a sideloaded app doesn't allow voice search? I don't think that's possible at the moment, but it's a possibility in the future. Once you try Google Assistant when it rolls out very soon in the UK (rollout of Google Assistant starts this week, US first), I'm sure you'll like it more! Google Assistant is incredible, with what you can do with it now!

You must be talking about sideloaded apps only, right? Can you give examples of what apps are currently buggy for you? And are you comparing it to a Nvidia Shield TV?
Yes, in the main had issues with sideloaded apps. Tried a few games too, but as expected they didn't run well. Don't get me wrong here, I like the box as a streamer which is really what it's for, but I expected it to be much better as it's a xiaomi with other android apps and games.

Oh, ok. Hopefully it lives up to all our expectations once running Android 7.
paid £69.99 for the International version with UK plug off fleabay and had it in 3 days. It runs Android TV but it certainly, whilst not a bad box by any means a close 2nd to a Shield. Issues currently known are no way to write to USB storage if not set to internal storage and remotes have a habit of losing connection. I've found movies on Kodi can be jerky on this whereas smooth on the Shield and don't even attempt to use upgrade filters on PSX emulation because the box hasn't the horsepower to deal with it.

That all said its still a better buy than just about every single other Chinese Android box simply because it doesn't use a hashed up version of Android for Tablet's and it seems to have factory support for firmware updates.

Jerky Kodi I presume was on Exodus Kodi add-on? If it didn't automatically update, do it manually and it will work perfectly again!

On my android smartphone, I had loads of issues with Android 6 with my SD card, which have been resolved on the latest Android 7 update - it works beautifully.
Also I'll add, has Optical out that will output 5.1 which the Shield sadly still lacks and WiFi performance isn't lacking so the lack of ethernet port isn't an issue for me.

Thanks, just get confused with Xiaomi and all its similar-sounding phones! Was wondering if I could ask at checkout for a different plug (re the Gearbest/EU plug listing) - maybe not. Obviously Aliexpress is cheaper than the Gearbest offering.

My brother is looking for an Android/Kodi/Netflix HD compatible box and it was suggested this Xiaomi does play Netflix HD hotukdeals.com/dea…564

I posted this (I assume, again, it's the same) about seven months ago when it was Chinese only (though you could flash an English version on it!) and most people were a bit sniffy about it! hotukdeals.com/dea…032
