Good sturdy 4tb hard drive from reputable brand.

Price has fluctuated a lot recently having jumped from £110 up to £140-150.

This is the lowest I've ever personally seen them.

Drive can be removed with a bit of force

Internal drive is a 5K4000 - HDS5C4040ALE630

I currently have 10 of these in a RAID Z2 array and they haven't skipped a beat.

And on Friday I'll have 20 :-)

If you buy multiple then the DABS Xmas codes work
XMASSAVE10 for £199 or over
XMASSAVE25 for £399 or over
XMASSAVE40 for £599 or over

Will need two, a backup is always prudent X)

Hahahah not a single byte of pr0n

That all streams from the Interweb

1:1 Blu Ray rips

It's a 45 drive JBOD but the front drives are connected to one server and the rear to a different so I could backup server 1 to 2 if I wanted

But no point when they're in the same location.

And as it's media which can be reripped it's not a bid deal anyway

I've had one fail out of 4 (or 5 - can't be @rsed to check). I guess that's the risk with any hard drive hence the RAID config. Price being equal, not sure why you would buy one of these over hard drive made for a NAS although depends how much you buy into that.

warranty?

Just a head up - I had two of these overheat and fail on me before I gave up and bought a microserver + drives instead. You might have more luck though!

Heat added for deal - although no prizes awarded for using them as a backup....:p

am definitely interested in a high capacity drive, 4TB or more, though it must be reliable. OP seems enthusiastic, but the other comments have put me off.

Any suggestions for robust drives are most welcome. Not worried if they're slightly more expensive than the regular Seagate/WD drives that are on offer quite often. I have a 2TB LaCie wich has been in heavy use for a couple of years without issues.

thanks!

is this self powered or have separate power adapters?

NO Hdd are reliable, its the nature of the beast the ONLY solution is backup, backup, backup!!! My opinion is that if you really do want to go HDD, stick to 2Tb inside a NAS in a RAID configuration (and pray you don't get robbed or have a house fire!!).

Will be my third drive - no problems with the others.

Who the hell downloads porn anymore? We can stream 4k and your still downloading porn.....

Its impossible to remove these drives from their USB case without damaging the plastic clips of the case, i.e will Void Warranty. If you intend to do this, use a tool such as Paragon Hard Disk Manager to zero and verify every sector of the drive beforehand, while its in its case. Takes around 26 Hours, but at least you know the drive is error free to start with.

Just remember though if you go with RAID1 you won't be protected from accidental file deletion! Actually backing up to a completely different set of media is always advised. A lot of people don't realise that RAID1 writes an identical copy to each disk at the same time, and similarly deletes at the same time.

Yes, yes. Streaming is essentially short term downloading. You're quite right and very clever, etcetc.

However, given the context of high capacity, raided long term storage, the question stands. Context...

With my internet speeds anything below 360p is laggy and buffers like crazy, so everything is an overnight download for me

Streaming is downloading, full stop.
Things have changed drastically, just a few years ago people stored more things because there wasn't such easy access to online data, like with 3G and 4G, and people wanting access to their things wherever they are (without storing locally).
You can call me old fashioned I guess, I like to keep things local. So streaming watered down 4k is out of the question.

Why would I want to stream any video I want, when I can have my own copy, accessible whenever I want, and even editable?

You won't be protected against accidental file deletion with any form of RAID, that isn't the purpose of RAID at all. RAID is not a backup solution, it is (in all proper modes, as in not 0) a redundancy solution to protect against disk failure (and to improve performance in some configurations).

As for the download/streaming pedants.

Stop. Please.

I know that - I was pointing this out to people who don't. Many people think RAID is the be-all and end-all and will save them from everything - we know it's not. The misconception, particularly with RAID1, is that it copies everything from one disk to the other and that the data on the copy will be safe. People just don't understand that this only protects from physical disk failures. Many home NAS solutions don't offer anything other than RAID0 or RAID1, and RAID0 just makes one big fat disk with no redundancy whatsoever, so I didn't even mention that.

I've been dealing with enterprise-class RAID solutions for over 10 years and in my experience this is particularly troublesome for some people to understand, so I thought it would be helpful to point it out.
