I picked up a pair of binoculars in poundland, the stregth is 4x30. They are perfect for the kids to get them interested in birds and wildlife, my kids are easily and clearly able to see our the birds on the birdtable which is 30mtrs from the house at the moment.

Why not just say 120

At least you encouraged me to go find out what 4x30 meant.

Cheap 'childrens' binoculars are usually so useless they put kids off using them - but as Savvy-Saver says the kids are having fun using them they certainly seem worth the £1.

gonna use it to watch some bird next door come summer....

b00n

The 4 refers to the magnification and the 30 refers to the size of the objective lens(the front big one) in millimetres. The bigger this is, the more light the binoculars let in.

So basically speaking a cheap digital camera that has say 7x digital / optical zoom will zoom more closely than these at 4x30?

P.S. I'm not slagging the deal here - just want to know which has the better zoom.

They don't zoom - they're fixed at 4X. Zoom refers to a range of 'magifications' - there are binoculars that zoom but not for £1!

In a sense, yes they 'magnify' much as would your camera set to a fixed 4x, though as the camera probably starts at a slight wide angle (ie less than 1x) and most current compact digital cameras only cover a range of 3x at max optical zoom the 'magnification' would actually be less than 3x - ie your camera covers an optical range of perhaps 0.9x to 2.9x (hope that makes sense). I've ignored digital zoom here - though it does in one sense 'magnify' the image it's really just taking the 3x image and showing you only the centre part of it enlarged to fill the screen, hence quality suffers considerably. Of course, if you then print your camera pics at A4 size or more you're going to be 'magnifying' them again (though there won't be any more pixels so quality will drop further).

In practice, as the magnification gets higher it becomes increasingly difficult to use hand held due to 'binocular shake' anyway. Again, there are binoculars with stabilisation but not for £1.

In practice I don't think you can compare a still camera image with a 'live' moving one through the binoculars as the real time moving image gives your brain so much more info to understand what's going on - just look at a still from a movie to see what I mean.

The second number, for the lens size, gives some indication of how well they'll cope with lower light - the smaller it is the less light goes in so the worse they'll be in dull conditions.

At this price they'll hardly have the best optics, but if they work OK and the kids enjoy them why not buy a few more for when they get dropped/broken? Seems like a great deal to me.

Nice find, need to get some. HOT

show me the bit that lets me know its sarcasm, and not just a dumbass. . . . given some of the posters IQs on here it was an easy mistake to make dont you think

This is a good deal. I have a house full of binoculars I have been blackmailed into buying on various trips to countryside parks. Infact, I just paid £9 for a pair at "Mickey's magic show live" last night...
