And neighbour's car which is where one of mine landed, smack bang on the middle of the roof.

Cheap, it's true + I thought these were a lovely idea until I thought about the environmental issues

True

very good price. Voted hot, but these lanterns have been known to cause serious crop fires clicky
Edited by: "no1john" 4th Sep 2010

too dangerous

Fly them in the middle of winter when there is snow, that would keep everyone happy. They may fly better in the cold air too!

these lanterns do not cause fires - the heat source is what keeps them in the air, so they only come back to earth once the flame is out - so no fires. also they all tend to be made from fully biodegradable materials too. Happy days

I thought they had wires in them that could be harmful to animals, that's my concern. If they do then I wouldn't want them at any price.
If they are fully biodegradable then of course we all want them at this price.

Yes, we know,I'm all for a good time, but not if it could cause injury to wildlife. I saw a programme about all the rubbish that gets washed up on beaches. Apparently all our plastic bags, balloons etc are killing wild animals, who live miles away from us, as far away as the Arctic Circle!

HOT HOT HOT ! THIS IS EVEN BETTER THAN POUNDLAND!

I STILL LOVE YOU POUNDLAND!

FYI Although the shade part is biodegradable, the frame on these is wire (unlike some others which use bamboo).

You couldn't' be more wrong.
Recent example:
bbc.co.uk/new…445

Other examples all over the world which is why more sensible countries are beginning to ban them:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/h…stm

Fire apart, they have been the cause of injury to animals chewing on the remains, few are made biodegradable, but even if they are, they are a risk to cattle before they have a chance to decompose.

Errrr... is this the best evidence you can come up with? A crop fire in Oxford and a restriction (not a ban) of their use within 5 miles of an airport. And a risk to cattle?!? The cattle that you're going to eat in a burger! Jump on another bandwagon cos you not very good on this one.

Yes. Perfectly good evidence! MANY more reports on internet news sites, here and around the world. Your bandwagon is the one which has very loose wheels, not mine! To prove an argument, you need to make a point supporting your position, just slagging off good evidence doesn't do anything.

What has eating animals for food got to do with the argument? Apart from the obvious effect on animal welfare, this is damage to property, farmer's property.

If you can't reason from obvious clear evidence, you will find most reasonable people can, even many of those people who previously supported unrestricted use now see the problem as documented proven cases come forward.

nihcaj was giving people information, just as 63098792 and myself before. You seem to be taking this personally. Why?
We need the information so that we can all make responsible decisions. If you think that's spoiling your deal, well, oh dear. oO

It's a deal that's had a positive as well as a negative response. I submit deals which I think might benefit people... it's nice when they go hot, but if you look at my submit history, you'll see I've got a mixed bag of results.
No, what gets on my nerves is people rattling on about how these are bad for the environment/wild life with barely a scrap of evidence other than hearsay. nihcij had blatantly misrepresented a foreign news story for example. It wasnt a ban, it was a restriction near an airport... and when you bother to read the article in more detail, it wasnt even these type of lanterns which were being used. But people will quote this interpretation of the article now, and people will assume it's a true story, when it's really a total fabrication. It's as far from the "information so that we can all make responsible decisions" as you could possibly get. Like I said, you're just ill-informed bandwagon jumpers.

Ah, here we go, it starts to get personal! I did not misrepresent anything... I linked reports. If I had being misrepresenting anything, I would not have put a link in for people to READ - with their own eyes, not just my opinion of it.
I don't see you linking anything with any evidence either way, it's all just YOUR words telling us how safe these things are! Where is there ANY evidence that "Proves" their safety? Surely do do that, you would need to prove these fires did not occur as has been reported - quite some challenge that - you claim my evidence is so worthless, where is the evidence that counters that. Are you suggesting the Oxfordshire Fire Brigade are lying, or is it the BBC for reporting it?

Seeing as most people now seem to agree that these things are the nuisance that has long been suggested, you will note that as cheap as these are, (probably the cheapest offer ever) there is precious little hot voting for them.

I dont care if the deal went to minus 1000!!!! I've submitted deals which have gone colder than you could imagine.
But "Other examples all over the world which is why more sensible countries are beginning to ban them" followed by a link to a news article where there was a restriction of home made lanterns near an airport!? If you cant admit that that's a misrepresentation of the truth, then the horse which is pulling that bandwagon is as blinkered as the people sat on it. Good luck.

And nowhere have I said that I think these lanterns are safe. Another misrepresentation.

And 'Seeing as most people.....' . You've based this on the fact that the deal has got a low score? Is that how you make decisions and form your opinions? You really have to start questioning things more.

Total over reactions here from the op!
The BBC links look pretty reliable to me, why shouldn't they be? Oh, that's right the beeb are just jumping on a bandwagon. (_;)

Stop patronising people poppoppop. Some of us simply care about our environment and maybe even the welfare of animals sharing it. Maybe we can actually think for ourselves?!

Apologies if some of my replies bordered on argumentative. I know you can think for yourselves. Different opinions make life interesting.
I've chilled out now. I spent the rest of last night releasing my lanterns ... very relaxing. (joke)
