Got an old Barclaycard account you are not using?

Just phoned to cancel my account and they gave me £50 credit, can't say it will work for all but these were my circumstances.

I've had an account for 6 years and always paid the balance in full and run the account well. Not used the card for around 6-9 months as moved over to Tesco for the points.

Called today to cancel as I said it does not pay me any benefits and they gave me 12 months interest free on purchases. Said that does not really benefit me so can you please still cancel the card. Then told as a good loyal customer we will credit your account with £50 to use as you like, so I said yes please.

As I said, may not work for all and if it works for you then happy days.

Barclays giving out money!?

Trust me I was surprised and did double check with the telephone operator.

I've done this before - wait 3-6 months and phone again - they'll offer you a further £25 to stay again!

Thank you very much. I just called up and they gave me £20 within 5 minutes! I know it isn't as much, but I have used my card recently. Much appreciated!

I might just do this even if I end up canceling it's not going to be the end of the world! It's weird that even credit card companies are doing retention "deals" now

I have been offered £20 staright away

Makes a nice change, last time I had a credit card I didn't use they rang me to cancel it.

I have just called to cancel my card.

Offer 1: 12 months interest free on purchases.
Response: no use to me

Offer 2: £20 or £30 credited on your account.
Response: I'm disappointed it's not more.

Offer 3: £50 credited on your account.
Response: Thank you very much!

I then called MBNA MasterCard and asked to cancel my card as I'm getting no benefits. They said OK we will cancel it now for you.

I'm about to do the same.

this worked for me a few months back. i got £50 credit so i didnt cancel. i phoned back 6 weeks after and got another £50. nothing the third time unfortunately!

....anyone tried this with a nationwide credit card???

Eighteen months ago I was offered, and I accepted free credit to keep card. Once I'd spent the credit I phoned again to cancel and was offered twelve months free credit on all purchases. Free credit is about to expire, hope they offer me cash to keep card.

Yes by coincidence I cancelled my MBNA account today - I wasn't expecting anything and they didn't offer anything - other than I will still get marketing bumph for another 2 months ! I was surprised they didn't even try to keep me by asking why I wanted to cancel. I'm sure there are stats as to acquisition costs of £100-200 per account. And there I was gone.

I haven't used my Barclaycard in years, doesn't stop them sending me junk mail every week with rubbish promotions.

Now!!!!! if they applied £20 or £50 to my card, then I might just start using it again.

My old Egg card got converted into a Barclaycard ages ago. I already had a Barclaycard so wanted to cancel one. They offered me £50 to keep both. Done deal.

Mbna will be getting loads of cancellations at the moment due to no longer being in partnership with Amazon.

What number do you ring? thanks

took 20 mins and just offered me a reward card, tbh i dont mind just canceling anyway as rarely use a cc.

but haggle a lil bit more for an opeing offer and got £20.. i never have paid any fees so quite impressed.

Didn't work for me, only offered balance transfer and 0% interest for 12 months. Been meaning to cancel for awhile but obviously never spent enough with them

Just cancelled mine, nothing?...straight away?.....been wanting to get rid of it for a while.

If anything gets rid of a card which will inevitably get me into trouble especially near Christmas, if I can't afford it I won't buy it!!...so cheers Op...

well, that didn't work. they just cancelled my card (took a while too).

I got a £50 credit last year when I asked BCard to close my credit card account - but I still closed it after I spent the money! I explained I wanted to close it so I could apply for their 0% balance transfer deal for 30 months they were offering on a new card, which I did.

i called to cancel then the operator said thats fine, just pay off the balance

Card company's don't just make profit from payments.. They also take a cut from visa / MasterCard who charge a fee to retailers

You made me chuckle at half five this morning

Do you think this would work with a debit card account??

same questions from me

My boyfriend didn't use his for years he wanted to cancle it to get the halifax clarity to use abroad and when he called them they said they would do a deal and let him use it abroad for free. He did he would think about it. He explained to me what they said, I was very surprised so I told him to call up and speak to someone else. They said that it wouldn't be possible to use the card abroad without charges so he cut it off.
Anyway for those of you who have old credit cards they don't use, you should cut them off. They affect you for when you do apply for credit. There are also lots of 0% deals, cashback and points deals too.

Great post by the way. I rang up a couple of weeks back and asked to cancel. Please note I did have a zero balance when I rang to cancel. They offered me £20.00 to stay and switch to their freedom card. They advised that if I spend £500.00 in the first 3 months I would receive £30.00 in vouchers. Not bad I thought as I will just use the credit card for food shopping, fuel etc and pay off in full each month. A week later still no freedom card. I expected it to be here in a couple of days. I rang up again and asked where my new freedom card was. I was advised that the new card will only be sent at my next statement date. I was never told this and was therefore not happy. I was passed to a supervisor and was given £50.00 credit for the "lost freedom points" until my new card was sent. You have to spend £500 in 3 months to get £30.00 vouchers so a one off credit of £50.00 was a bonus. Therefore instead of cancelling I have received £70.00 credit and I should get £30.00 vouchers after 3 months. I will then be ringing to cancel again to see whether they can offer me anymore credit.

The other week I sent them a message via online account requesting cancel. Got an email asking me to contact them and they offered £50 to stay.
