Can anyone find a suitable picture?

didn't even realise tesco did calling cards...is it like a top up voucher or a seperate phone line call this number style thing?

Original Poster

It's a card that they give you and then you can just take it to the till and put on the money like a regular top up card. Then you call a freephone number and talk away. It's the cheapest I have found and this deal makes it even better!

The credit on it lasts forever as far as I'm aware so its worth getting a few vouchers from the paper and do a few transactions to get £20 for £10. The papers litter the busses round here anyway so I may as wellmake good use of them!

Just one thing to remember though they have a 4p connection charge which was in todays Metros fine print.

However offer hot

Ok I just. went and used a couple, same cashier and she didn't mind! For calling charges see the paper. They are also on the card itself and on the Tesco website.

This is scorchio, voted hot. Am I right in thinking that if I am paying £2.50 for a £5 card, then their rate to India, instead of 2p per minute is really only 1p a minute. (Mind you, that's pretty cheap anyway is it not? Does anyone know if it is only one voucher per person? Hope not as I'm hunting for Metro's on the tube tonight to stock up on these bad boys. I've used other cards like these in the past, been ripped off loads with things like daily maintenance charges and minutes that didn't even last a flipping minute, so I'm guessing that because it's Tesco they will all be above board.

hi, where can I get this metro newspaper from?

Original Poster

You get it on the bus, train, tram etc in most big towns/cities.

the best card i have used to date for india is Chilli Talk for £5 you get 500 mins plus the 1st 60 mins free plus no connection charge.

I use rebtel.com/ and it is very cheap ,ps not to be cheeky but if you do wanna sign up lemme know cos if I refer a friend I get 10 quid bonus

I got mine and it worked. Thanks everyone for the tip.
How can they afford it?
I know that most calling cards have lots of hidden charges - I got caught with daily maintenance fees of 15p a day on the other ones (from lycatel), but I've checked this out and its legit. Even says NO HIDDEN CHARGES on the front of their card.

Might I have finally have found the only decent calling card?

Based on a quick look at the rates, I'd say they are good, but no better than you can get on the internet with a bit of searching.

For example - recently I had to call Indian and French mobiles a lot - cheapvoip.com charges 0.8p/min for both of these and is less hassle than having to buy calling cards.

This may be worth it for someone who doesn't have to call abroad very frequently or who finds all this internet telephony stuff a bit too technical.

Talk Home card is the best for calling the Asian sub-sontinent in my experience. Havent tried other countries with that card though..

whats the special number?

I use the 99p international card from (you've guessed it) 99p stores and it is brilliant. You get 100 minutes to India (land or mobile), I use the card after a week and remaining minutes is still there after the 1st use. Most other cards tend to take away 10-20p everyday you don't use the card, but this one really doesn't.
Went to get one yesterday though and the lady at the till said their not selling them anymore as head office have told them to stop (didn't say why) so may have to try this one.
BTW I use the London number to get 100 minutes as I use my mobile.

Its free (if u have free days) for voipcheap (dot)com to most destinations in the world. £12.60 lasts around 4-5 months in my house when ringing ireland and my parents use phone-to-phone instead of the cheaper alternative so it could last even longer
Edited by: "shadowdogg" 6th Sep 2010

Just bought three cards on the way home. Worked spot on, phoned India and a mobile in India, crystal clear. I timed the call as I thought they might play some games with the charging like other cards and it was fine, chatted for just under ten mins, got charged 24p.

Hey Jooxs, I wouldn't be such a fan of Chilli talk if I was you. Used it in the past and my money went down the drain. I felt ripped off.
Have you read the ChilliTalk T&Cs. http://www2.chillitalk.com/help/terms_and_conditions.aspx
It clearly states:

"A connection charge of up to 25 pence applies to all calls and varies by destination. A daily maintenance charge of up to 49 pence applies: call Customer service for details."

That's why calling cards have such a bad rap. What exactly needs maintaining at 49p a day? They're all the same, tricking us with hidden fees.
I like the idea that you only get charged if you make a connected call - something that Tesco seem to be doing right at least.

Thanks for highlighting this, I didn't know. Chili talk sounded so legit as well!
Lycatel is the same charging the same stuff on hidden fees.
I guess that's why you get loads of different cards out there but really their being made by the same companies. Just there to confuse us poor suckers.
THANKS TESCO FOR DOING THIS. (though your 5 years late!)

With international calling co. the usual things that happen:
Uncompetitive Rates
Poor Customer Service
Suspectable overcharging
Sim Quality is poor
Poor Deals

However when they did enter into the UK market they were decent. After a year of service they just became a pile of pap.

These are the experiences me and my extended family hav had with Lebara

You can get them at Tesco stores and usually near the ciggy counter. You need to pick up a tesco card and take it to the till and tell them how much you want to put on the card.

Hi Raj, they have plenty of cards in the Cheapside Metro, and the Bishopsgate Metro which are pretty close to you!

Thanks very much.. Got mine from Cheapside Metro

Hi there,

A great website to look at is callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/int…er/ which displays the cheapest international calls for many countries.

You find a special number to dial, which has around a 10p connection charge and then calls could be as low as 0.5pence per minute (eg India).

On the coupon the validity was provided. Cant remember but best is you check the coupon.

When I got mine @ WImbledon, the customer service desk read the whole promotion before she gave me the discount.
