The Verge notes that while this launch covers audiobook basics (e.g. adjust speed, sleep timer, sync playback position across devices), it doesn't include a few other features (e.g. Android Auto support)

Works fine for me using the Play Books app
Bought a book, but it hasn't appeared in my google play books app.
Anyone know how to get it ?
Normal books purchased just automatically appear in books app after purchase
This is great news. Audible needs the competition
Does Google Home support playing these in the UK?
Ready player one is my recommendation

Yes I've used it myself here in UK.
Can you download them as MP3s, to play on whatever device you like? Audible doesn't allow this.
How does Jordan Peterson turn 12 Rules for life into a 15 hour audiobook?

Rule 1: Don't spend 15 hours listening to a list that you can read in 30 seconds..
Total noob question, I'm interested in audio books but what player do audio books play through? And do they auto resume etc?
started listening to audio books in the car and I've been buying them via amazon with the kindle book and then adding narration. I think its cheaper for me that having an audible subscroption at the moment as the narration options are usually about 3-4 more - sometimes a only a quid or so.
Astrophysics for People in a Hurry for 99p is great!

I was considering that but decided to buy it for £1.99 and use the 50% off something another more expensive audiobook.

Good idea...still amazing for £1.99
There's also Lee Child's Jack Reacher short story collection called No Middle Name for £2.99! Bargain!
I bought the NKJV Word of Promise Audio Bible Old Testament at half price - (about a fiver) and am really glad to see it divided into sensible chapter names rather than just numbers 01, 02, 03 etc. as in the case of audible. I wonder if I can use a google home to choose a certain chapter like proverbs. That would give it a distinct advantage over audible on echo's. Of course having 6 echoes already it's going to have to be a lot better than how audible integrates before I could consider a whole system change - I also have a lot invested already in audible audiobooks...

I wonder how can I download though for offline listening?

Great post OP - competition for audible can only be a good thing though!

Looks like purchases are available in the Family Library, like normal books. Have been wanting that on Audible for ages.
So now I want to transfer all of the audiobooks I uploaded into my Google Play Music library to Google Play Books to join my solitary purchase but there is no option to upload in Books or transfer from Music. It's a long time since I used itunes but I'm sure I had the same problem. I can't see a download option either so I can't move my new purchase from Books to Music. Has anyone worked this out or got any ideas?

Worked for me just now, got Mythos by Stephen Fry for £4, even better was the fact that I had survey credit that paid for it

Why? I like Audible.
I, Partridge- read in the voice of Alan himself is brilliant and only £3.50 with the discount. Sadly all the titles I actually want seem to be 15 quid

I do too, brought 96 books so far from them, but prices are relatively high, I object to Amazons unwillingness to make the books I own available through Chromecast Audio, and Google home. I feel they have had a bit of a monopoly and thats not good for consumers or for the authors and producers.

I also like to share my media, legally owned music, films and appreciate being able to use family sharing. Yes I can install audible on my kids phone so she can listen to harry potter, but with amazon you always have to have the big sales push the adverts the one click buy. So aged 10 she can buy whatever if I do she can also listen to all my unsuitable content. Or I can give her no access, torrent the file etc.... Amazon needs competition.
Finally a high quality option, other than Audible, for audiobooks. Prices seem relatively cheaper than Audible also.
Thanks for this! Cancelled my Audible subscription (already paid for the 2nd month after free trial, unfortunately). But I have bought Ready Player One using the 50% off, along with A Brief History Of Time and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. Can't go wrong for £1.99 for each! And even better I have plenty of Google credit to use (thank you Google Rewards!)

I tried to cancel mine too. Gave me £10 to stay. So guess was lucky I had brought 3 kindle books with no rush credits when cheap that interested me and knew could upgrade to audiobook. So that £10 paid for the 3 books to have audiobook versions. Result. Will still cancel in a month.

Ive been subbed to them for about 3 years now so I'm only ever paying a maximum of £7.99 per audio book which is a steal imo.

It's bought not brought.
A few of the best choices I've not seen anyone mention yet (prices don't include discount):

-Various Discworld novels between £6-8 (some abridged, check before buying)
-LotR books £10 each for unabridged, £8 for radio play versions
-The Hobbit and Silmarillion £8 each
-Tolkien's Children of Hurin (read by Christopher Lee) for £9
-Necronomicon (collected Lovecraft works, over 20 hours in total) for £20
-Complete Edgar Allan Poe for £20 (might be niche but a huge 45 hours of content on this one)
-To Kill a Mockingbird for £4
-The Hound of Death (collected Agatha Christie stories read by Christopher Lee) for £7.50

SO many good choices, I really wish you could use the 50% off more than once.
I got 2 audiobooks into one account with 50% off by using my wifes gmail account to buiy a second audiobook as a "gift" for my account so I guess you could do this with as many google accounts as you have gifting them to the same unified account.

There is nothing wrong with their prices.
I'm glad your happy with what you pay but competition is still good. If we didn't have competition this site wouldn't exist.
