Thats a nice price for a 500GB 2.5" portable drive! I noticed eBuyer is doing a 400GB one for £77 if your budget cant to £100. Not as good as the 500GB deal though

ebuyer.com/pro…970

Sin

SATA drive inside, Hitachi and cheaper than buying the drive alone, plus points !!

Bear in mind folks this will fit in your pocket and doesn't require separate power cable with bulky transformer and is a 2.5" laptop usb powered drive not the typical external 3.5" drives which ARE NOT portable.

The price being for £100 you can get a 1tb drive which is meant to stay stationary or a portable 500gb...

for a portable drive, this is great value...voted HOT

this is pretty hot, as i've been keeping my eye on 2.5" 500gig drives for a while, and they''ve been around the £150 mark

one thing to point out is that this is probably the hitachi drive that's non standard size, so is slightly too thick to fit in some (or many/most) laptops as it's slightly thicker than the standard 9.5mm (i think it's 12mm), just in case someone is considering installing the HD and a laptop and putting the old drive in the external case

hopefully this will see the start of large laptop drives falling like the 1TB drives. i was considering getting 2x500gig 2.5" drives, but it would have cost more than 3x the price of a single 3.5" 1TB drive so i got the 1TB spinpoint F1 instead. i'll upgrade the drives on my laptop when the prices are better

This is really good....
Doesn't look as well made as the freecom toughdrive, but the toughdrive's 320gb is more expensive than this.

I've recently bought a 320gb WD Passport drive.... Had i seen this one i'd probably have gone with it.

I believe the ebuyer drive is 3.5", so not comparable.

From ebuyer website, the dimensions of the 400Gb drive are:-
Dimensions 13.9 x 8.3 x 2 cm / 5.5 x 3.2 x 0.8 inch

Therefore it is a 2.5" drive, and is comparable. The Buffalo drive works out to be 19.9p/Gb and the Freecom one is 19.2p/Gb. The Buffalo drive does seem slightly better built though imho.

If the HDD enclosure is easy to disassemble then there's no reason it shouldn't work as the drive seems to be a Travelstar 5K500.

No it isn't a standard size (9.5m) it's a slightly thicker at 12.5mm and therefore will not fit.

It seems it uses the 9.5mm size drive? Correct me if I am wrong thanks

Can anyone recommend any usb powered ext hdd which may be cheaper? Does not have to be 2.5in. I just need something without an extra power cable cluttering deskspace.

To run solely off bus power, it would have to be a 2.5" drive.

If you have any old 2.5" drives laying about, you can buy the external cases now for

You're wrong

The link you have used is for the 320gb version.

I think people may have misunderstood what I meant. I don't mean to open it up & stick it in my ps3, I mean to use it as an external HDD. I know that any Usb HDD that is externally powred doesn;t work.

Unless it still doesn't. So people want to correct me again please do.

the Freecom one is 43p more:

Are there any smaller about 160GB for under £50 like this which does not require external power, 500GB is more than enough for me.

I was looking at the Maxtor 160GB for £39 at Tesco’s which was voted cold (-43), is that because it requires external power? Or is it because Maxtor are not reliable?

Thanks,

It's very often peoples ignorance of the differences between external 3.5 & 2.5 drives that makes external portable ones get cold votes.

Not quite as large a capacity as you requested but you can get a 120gb Freecom Portable drive from Amazon for £34.99:

160gb Freecom - £43.99:

Thanks bingsy.

Which is better, Freecom,Buffalo, Maxtor or any others?

I was in Aldi today and as I left I saw a poster advertising a 750gb External HDD for around £80. Ive just looked on the Aldi website and cant see it, but I swear I saw this advertised in Aldi

Not as an internal drive, but if connected via USB you'll need to leave the drive as FAT32 as NTFS won't work on PS3 at the mo.

If you have files bigger than 4gb (e.g. MKV files) use a program called MKV2VOB which 'remuxes' the video files and you can split it across 1gb / 2gb / 4gb etc parts. You could even use multiple 1gb usb sticks if necessary.

I have the 80gb version of this drive for watching stuff from my PC on my PS3, or alternatively you can use tversity and stream from your PC to your PS3.

AFAIK 500GB is as high as 2.5" drives go and even then like this one those are often fatter than standard because of an extra platter. I suspect anything at 750GB is going to be a 3.5" mains-powered drive.

received mine today... seems good so far, really quiet thanks to no fans... Green light on top tells u it is connected to your computer and changes to amber when it is being accessed.... Software is not compatible with Windows XP 64 bit.... Also to use the Turbo that it talks about you need to install the software that comes with it [or from their website].... The actual drive itself is pretty fast without using the turbo feature.....

This will be the LARGE and NOT-PORTABLE 3.5" drive i mentioned earlier which requires a BULKY external power plug + transformer so not comparable to this item.

You're quite right, the 500GB drives are still quite new on the market.

Fantastic deal, really like the design of the case and it's quite a bit cheaper than an internal drive

John

Well mine has just arrived i sent the 400gig back to play.com

happy days

so did anyone open one up to put inside their PS3? I am thinking of selling my Wii and getting a PS3 instead so this would be great to keep my hundreds of movies in...
