Does anyone know if this is a decent make/model?

I think when my dad took it to the till it scanned at £39.99

but the use of the power adaptor is a killer. takes the point of transport out. but handy if ur using for extra downloads.

In my experience, maxtor hard disks always fail. They suffer from overheating and fail quite frequently. We even bought a batch of 6 maxtor internal hard disks and 5 failed within a couple of months. I always stick to western digital since seagate bought maxtor.

Seagate are normally a good hard-drive manufacturer. Or at least they used to be.

Maxtor - well I've read some bad reviews. Especially if its this one: amazon.co.uk/MAX…357

Just noticed the amazon reviews!! I'd stay well away considering there are other alternatives around similar prices.

Just off the top of my head cdiscount.co.uk/Com…tml £45 (free delivery code too)

I haven't had any probs with the Maxtor Diamond 8 and 9 drives I've been running over the years. Still trying to decide whether I should get one of these puppies or not.

sorry an update, the sticker my dad saw advertised at £39.99 , scanned at £49.99, so dad showed the sticker and got it for £39.99

Seagate now own Maxtor

Aye read that but are they built to the maxtors original design and specifications or seagate's....

It mostly depends on the drive anyway. The type I linked to on amazon has nothing but bad reviews overall whilst another different maxtor drive might be fine e.g one mentioned above.

From the details in the original post (must have missed first time/updated) I think its this:

ciao.co.uk/Max…176

I'd ditto all of that too. WD for me.

Yes I know this make is the poorest out of them all.

Think of them like the Aldi of the hard drive market, do not buy this product, stay away from Maxtor.
All risk losing all the data you put on to it.

The best thing you can do if you buy this is visit the nearest vet to be put down immediately.

Don't insult Aldi.

Let's hope Seagate sort Maxtor out and not the other way round.

I have lost loads of stuff with 6 Maxtor failures to date.

Been using this drive for over 6 months now and no problems at all, bought mine for £69.99 so £39.99 is a great price if you can get them to give it to you for that.

I'm suspicious of people who have so many drives fail. I lost 3 drives over a 2 year period before realising that the problem was the fact that my case didn't cool the drives down well enough. Same model drives are now running in my P180 with no problems for almost 3 years now.

So they sell superiour products at discount prices??

I suspect you have never been to Aldi..?

However, in my experience Maxtors aren't generally as reliable as other brands. Tend to use Hitachi or Western Digital. Might just have been me though.

You might be right. Maybe Maxtor's are just more susceptible to insufficient cooling?

Nope they sell cheap products aimed at chavs

Enough said and no I haven't been to Aldi. I don't like happy shopper products.

Perhaps? Who knows. I've never bought a Maxtor because they weren't all that popular back in Australia but I had 2 WD HDD's and a Seagate all fail on me back in Australia. The replacement for the first drive that failed (a 36gb Raptor) is still going strong in my current case 5 years after I got it replaced.
