Going through scan.co.uk's latest deals under Today Only, i came across this absolute bargain. I know the Deskstars arent rated highly, but tbh, at least they work compared to the seagate barracuda's at the moment.

Would like to note, those who are members at AVforums.com can get free delivery on this, so the price is only £39.09.

But if you dont get it, pay the £6.99 delivery on top.

Click on the link, and its under Super Savers. You'll see it in the list

TBH Deskstars got a very bad rep, for obvious reasons, but the problems were resolved years ago. I think the company was bough out (was IBM?). Drive is actually not bad. 16MB cache & 8.5 ms access time and NCQ.
Voted hot.

scan.co.uk/Tod…ly/ - brings you a little closer

Sorry, hit warm, meant to hit hot, add 10 degrees!

Done a bit of checking, this drive gets good reviews, and due to it's energy efficient design, would be great for a media centre or a pc that was on a lot, or for backups.
Not for those "needing" a "high performance" drive though.

For the deal, I'd normally vote hot, but I bought a 400gb Deskstar from Scan, and I wouldn't recommend them.
Am using it as an external drive, and the file system gets corrupted every so often.

would this be ok to upgrade sky hd with ???

I would (and have) put a 1tb in mine a 500gb wouldnt give much extra space IMO, as the HD content takes up so much space

could anyone be so kind as to point be in the right direction - I need something similar to the deal in this post, but without the SATA interface (needs to be IDE (PATA) - e.g. WD5000AAKB ....this site has one for £64.00 Inc VAT + delivery

is there a better option out there (better name? better price? more capacity?)

thanks

Well, there is ] this drive, although it is not the fastest at only ATA100, but to be honest, I would steer clear of any Seagate drive right now with all the problems they are having at the moment. You could also try a search on this Hitachi HDS725050KLAT80 drive.

Thanks for the help, guys ;-)
(I'd also been advised to avoid seagate)

If you can find one, perhaps you could use a "SATA bridge" instead?

Hmmm, has this deal expired? I can't seem to find it.

I would avoid Seagate like the plague at the moment -

tomshardware.com/new…tml

My 500GB died without warning, not detected in the BIOS or anything. Incidentally, ebuyer have told me that they replace "like for like" until you've had 3 or more drives with a problem. (even though this is a known issue at Seagate)

Sorry, it's not exactly to do with the OP, but could be pertinent info for anyone looking to get a new HD.

You can get a IDE to SATA convertor interface from DealExtreme for $5.46.

Still in stock - have just ordered one. scan.co.uk/pro…213

Guys, before buying one of these drives be aware they are cheap for a reason. I've owned a couple and they are dreadfully, grindingly slow. Real-world access time is 19ms compared to about 12ms for a 7200rpm Western Digital, they are probably the slowest SATA drives on the market . They're okay for putting in a USB enclosure or something like that but I wouldn't recommend using them for anything more demanding.

I replaced my Hitachis with 5400rpm Western Digital GP drives and they're so much better its just silly. Quieter, cooler running and much, much faster.

i have a Western Digital WD5000AAKS, very fast, no problems as yet, very quiet too, just a recommendation, currently just under £47 on ebuyer

Still in stock folks dunno why its expired

Can a mod unexpire this??

If you use that link above - you'll get it at retail without the pendrive part of the offer.

have you tried it internally?
its more likely to be the usb interface causing that to happen...
