just ordered this ]http//ww…929 from ebuyer to replace a few capacitors in an aging dvd player. should i cancel my order and get the maplin one instead? you might have guessed i'm not an expert on soldering irons.

Good deal. I have to think what other odds and sodds I want from Maplin now.

Zurich, yes i would definitely cancel that order! That is extortionate for an 18 Watt iron. If you just want a cheap iron for occasional use, you can get a decent 30 Watt iron from eBay for a fiver.

Having said that, i think its worth spending the extra few pounds for a temp controlled one like this, with a decent stand and even a sponge

thanks for the reply.

spike point tip ???

Has anyone ever used a spike tip point (those who know what they are doing) ??

I worked for a very very large electronics manufacturer and have never seen anyone use a spike tiphttp://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/72/e7/d4/70564502-149x149-0-0_METCAL+Metcal+Soldering+Tip+Bevel+700+Deg+F+For+MX.jpg

They used the above type

Yeah, its definatley more common to use an Anvil tip, but i figured i would wait and see when it arrives, becuase tips are easily bought from elsewhere very cheaply

Gonna try pick one up in store

Cheers
