This is a relatively specialist device, originally intended to be used with the Lexar Professional Workflow HR1 or HR2 hubs. However, it can also be used as a stand-alone external SSD drive (USB3) according to several reviews.

The SSD drive has a raw capacity of 512GB and quoted read transfer speeds up to 450MB/s and write speeds up to 245MB/s.

Amazon currently stocks it at £135.42.

FYI, you can plug up to 4 of these drives into the HR1 hub (£46.24 at Amazon) - it operates at USB3 speeds

Alternatively, you can plug up to 4 of them into the HR2 hub (£160.68) which operates at Thunderbolt 2 speeds

anyone know if fhe drive can be extracted - and whether it is a standard, SATA, 2.5"

Damn they are getting cheap.
Need a good time machine drive. Think this may do.
Thanks OP

Great price if you can throw the external case away?

Almost certainly not. Lexar specialise in making flash drives, so there's unlikely to be anything resembling a standard disk drive inside the case - more likely a bunch of chips and a controller. But that's just a guess.

Probably worth quoting from the conclusion of the second review I linked to above as it may make the product's purpose a little clearer...

The DD512 has been obviously optimized for using it as a backup device. … The DD512 has been obviously optimized for using it as a backup device. Its performance with small files is by far lower than other SSDs and it cannot be efficiently used for tasks that require intense random read/write operations. So with $170 you get a nice accessory for your Professional Workflow HR1 or a compact external device to get with you and backup your daily work, files or photos. The main advantage of the device seems to be its price, which possibly the lowest you can find for a 512GB SSD - not to mention for an external one.

If you want one cheaper for your laptop or desktop best thing is to do a search on eBay and then add the search to your follow list with alert/notifications on,

It will make a dog of performance for OS even if you could.Read Genki's links for reasons as to why. You cannot use a "square peg" to fit a "round hole".

Hot price for this size SSD!

. Time Machine won't make use of the fast SSD speeds so a cheap HDD will give you twice the space at one third the cost. The bottleneck with TM is the OS, not the disk speed. Then again you "may" get longevity from an SSD depending on your environment. Cheers.

So a normal hdd is better for time machine
What would the ssd take more space?

Also this paroculuar ssd fits in a hub What's the advantage of the hub really? Apart from offering possible other connections I. E sd card etc and thunderbolt depending on hub.

Is this also bus powered?

The whole idea of this series of products is to enhance the workflow of professional photographers. Each product is optimised for that end. The purpose of the SSD is to allow portable, and fast, backup in a modular system which can include card readers and backup drives in the one portable unit.

Attempts to use the drive for other purposes will be less than ideal. If it's not photographic backup, then it's not what it was created to do.

Gets a decent review in this months PC Pro magazine.

Is it small and compact
