Is the double slot card worth it over a HD4850 for £2 more?

ebuyer.com/pro…527

Probly take a dual slot card as opposed to a single slot from now on for heat dissipation. Also i prefer Leadtek to GECube.. imo much better make.

both are good prices but this one more so to me anyway

Yeah without adding to basket from the the today only page price will show as £117.48

thought about the hd4870?

Good price for the 9800GTX.

Prices may drop further with the impending release of the 9800GTX+

the 9800gtx beats the 4850 its not about fanboyism or anything like that google reviews I build a lot of pcs and generally find this card to perform better but obviously the single card seems better. Except the 4850 uses a LOT more power and creates a lot more heat.

Did not know about heat and power, good info cheers have a crossfire board which is why i was thinking 4850 with option to crossfire if multi-gpu configure ever become good ;-)

From what sources? The 4850 outperforms the 9800gtx. Power consumption is lower than the 9800gtx. Except the 4850's run hot, alot more than the 9800gtx, although that depends on which make and cooler is used.

ignore this, they use about the same amount of power,
and most people would say the hd4850 is the better card over all

lol im too slow

This is what the current price drops are about anyway.

Much like when the 8800GT came out Nov last year, these 4850 with single slot coolers also have iffy fan rpm to temp ramping issues.

With the GT, 5mins spent fiddling around in Rivatuner result in better ramping and therefore better temps. I dare say a similar solution might have already been found for the 4850 although I haven't checked recently.

Actually the 9800gtx is more power consuming than a 4850.
anandtech.com/vid…p=8

It runs hotter, but thats no massive concern......and 5 minutes too late

The 9800GTX+ has been dropped to $199.99 now, so not sure this is a good buy tbh. Which is officially released today (probably why they are clearing these)

I'm waiting till next week regardles.. hopefully i can pick up a cheaper 9800GTX and an even cheaper intel processor.

What a load of ******** mate. Get your facts straight or don't spread lies.

From what I've seen the 4850 is about the same as a 9800gtx. In certain situations the 4850 will out perform the 9800gtx and vice versa. It all depends on what games and resolution you play at. Check this article to help you decide what would be best for your setup;

I would say this is Scan clearing out old stock as the 9800 GTX+ is coming out in a couple of weeks time and is designed to be a direct comptetitor to the ATI 4850.

The new plus card will be a slightly better performer due to it coming with a high overclock, and this is because it will also for the first time, be 55nm based.

This card is the hotter more watt consuming 65nm based.

The two new ATI cards taking reveiwers by storm are both 55nm based also.

Voted hot anyway as a month ago this card was knocking on £300.

HD4850 is definitely a better buy when compared to 9800GTX, no doubt bout that.
9800GTX+ (Please note the "+" sign) and HD4850 is more like 50/50.

About the heat, I'm not too worried. Since it uses a single slot cooling, it'll definitely be hotter. It's just like comparing the temperature of a CPU using stock cooler and after market cooler.

The 4850 and 4870 both run hot, but can easily be fixed by setting the fan to run at a manual speed of 37%, this drops the temps 30°. There are guides on Google on how to do this.

The 4870 is an amazing card by the way!

Alternatively slap an Accelero S1 + Turbo fan kit on for low temps and low noise. Takes a few slots up though.

I've just RMA'd my 4850. I'm gonna go with this 9800 GTX. The drivers have matured at least. The 4850 had a very sloppy release and pretty much wrecked my PC.

The 4850 beat the 9800 GTX in some things, and the 9800 beat the 4850 in others. They're pretty much dead equal. The 9800 GTX+ beats the 4850 in almost every benchmark, and if that goes down to a good price, I'll wait for it.
