What is cause of the current egg shortage?

My ALDI and LIDL appears to be always out of stock.

Increase in energy and chicken feed prices. Coupled with a requirement to keep chickens indoors due to bird flu. Most free range eggs are from barn hens now. Lots of pressure on farmers at the moment.

Been this price instore for at least a month. The sizes are really good too.
The medium size ones used to buy at Aldi and LIdl are small in comparison!
Have started picking up a few bits at M&S as they cheap for M&S, and the quality is good.

Some examples of what have found instore...

    Loose carrots 50p a kg,
    500g Bran Flakes 75p
    Tins of soup 65p
    Packet Soup 80p
    300g Mushrooms £1
    800g Loaf of bread 85p
    6 pack tomatoes 85p

Also a fair bit of yellow label action to be found

I know the M&S ones say free range eggs, but they will actually be barn eggs due to the avian flu outbreak. We have around 50 hens and the currently have to be housed under cover to comply with DEFRA regulations.

I sell our eggs for £1 for 6

Common myth that M&S is very expensive. OK some of their stuff is a bit dear, but they have lots of stuff that is price matched or even cheaper than other supermarkets..
    Oh and 20% off!
    You lucky thing

These eggs look lovely and large for mixed size. The 15 mixed size eggs are tiny so I never buy them. My Iceland sell 10 large eggs for £1.79 not always that large at times but the yokes are very orange giving the appearance that they are more like free range than barn eggs. Iceland always has them in stock on 10% Tuesdays. I never see eggs in Lidl any more and I do not like the taste of Aldi's as they are completely bland.

How sad that a quid for 6 eggs is considered a deal, mind you the butter in Aldi last week had security alarms on them, what an awful state we're in ?

Eggs last months if refrigerated but Best kept in an airtight container so they don't take on any flavours or get bacterial infections.

Eggs can last over a year if they are unwashed (from a farm) with bloom intact and preserved by a process called water glassing.

I know the feeling. I posted a deal quickly for the benefit of the community. I was then was asked to provide photos, etc. My time was worth more than having to look for the receipt, take a photo, upload it, post the link, etc so I didn't bother and kept the deal for myself.

I understand the need for proof that the deal exists, but it wasn't as if I was claiming that something was 50p when it would normally be £5.

6 for £1 is not particularly cheap, even at today's prices. However you are much more likely to get them delivered with Ocado compared to going to a supermarket or relying on an online grocer that picks from supermarket shelves.

The unit price (between 16 and 17p per egg) is fairly typical for mixed weight free range eggs.
This is still hot though, because to get that price most places make you buy 10, 12 or 15 packs.

I bought eggs from Lidl yesterday, medium free range 12 for 2.19£ . I checked this morning and all of them are marked as number 2 eggs - deep litter indoor housing not 1 - free range. I bet we said goodbye to food standards already.
