Do I need 640GB in my PS3? No.

Do I want 640GB in my PS3? Yes.

Must resist at that price.

These are dropping in price so quickly. Think im going to hold out for now

I was looking to upgrade my PS3 hard drive and on another forum they said 640gb is the biggest you can get for PS3 right now as it has to be 9.5mm, not sure if that has changed since their post as it was a couple of months ago.

Same price at ebuyer, but a good deal nevertheless

Anybody had experience using samsung drives in a ps3 with BBC iplayer? I'm using a western digital drive and the playback of BBC iplayer is very jerky ever couple of seconds,

Are you downloading then playing or just streaming? If streaming, then it's most likely your broadband and not the hard drive.

EDIT: Sorry, seems I was talking utter balls.

I used to have this problem (WD 160GB), it was due to the drive trying to park the heads to save power as the iplayer caches at intervals. It works fine now however

Yeah every 8 seconds or so. Only supposed to be an issue with WD drives.

@jonsend
how did you solve the problem with the drive?

You can plug it into a computer to disable the power saving mode i think.

Just ordered one , i have over 40 games and heaps of PSN titles all squeezed onto a super quiet 40gb from 2007 . Its become increasingly frustrating to have to uninstall games that I have yet to finish to make way for new ones .
Been putting it off for years but at this price and for one without the WD iplayer issues ive got to take plunge . Will be able to fit so many of my albums onto it too. Thanks OP great spot .

The wd 'issue' can be remedied using a program called wdidle. I was unable to disable the function but wdidle3 /255 set it at the maximum interval and now it works fine.

This is a great deal and I only wish I had waited a few more weeks for this! Heat added (as soon as you posted it btw!)

Heads up:

Once the OS is installed, the PS3 will show 529GB of usable space.
The space the PS3 OS reserves is rediculous imo - wish they'd fix it.

i think you meant to say 1Tb lol

I have one installed in my PS3 (originally a 80GB model) and it works just fine. I had to format the drive brfore installation, search for Swiss Knife for a handy application. I also needed to use a thumb drive with the latest update off the Playstation site. Then it was the simple matter of a few hours transferring back-up data.

Perfect for jailbreak

I recieved it just yesterday from Ebuyer for 5 quid more with delivery.
Dang!

51.95 is another seller
still 45 at amazon though they say 1-3months ie out of stock
may still get it when back in stock for 45 (often comes back within the week if not discontinued which i doubt this is)

Great price, just ordered for my laptop. Says "Estimated delivery 21 Sep 2010 - 23 Nov 2010". Should get it just in time before Christmas, when bigger drives are even cheaper X)

Pass. The 500gb drives are better. You can get he hitachi Travelstar 7,200 rpm drive whihc is more energy efficient than this for less.

*less energy efficient. Higher spin rate = less energy efficient.

And on what basis are the 500gb drives better?

Does anyone know where you can get a smaller one for less? I have a 40gb that is gettin full but something like 200gb would easily do me. I don't really want to spend more to get more space that i'll never use.

Must have sold out quickly

I ordered 2 days ago when it was '1-3 months' and I got an email this morning stating it was in stock and that it's in the dispatch process

Ordered mine on Monday says it's shipping today. I guess they are getting the order done by another supplier.

Got mine this morning. Well done Amazon!

Just installed mine and noticed that it didn't have sensor fall built in.

Checked on Google and found that my Alienware M15x laptop has this feature built into the laptop

I've also run the Windows experience index and I'm getting a 5.9 rating (which is the same as my previous 250gb 7200rpm). So even with a drop 1800rpm it's still getting a good disk read/write rate!
