There's a good review of the laptop here and a way to improve the performance of the laptop here (I've done this on my i5 version and the video shows this being performed on an i5 machine).

You need to check the bios version though, anything over 0401 needs to be downgraded to tinker with the performance, instructions for this can be found here.

I love the laptop! It also comes bundled with Office so make a note of the key (along with the Windows key just in case) before installing a new version of Windows or link it to your Hotmail / Outlook account. I had to get in touch with Microsoft support to get the Office activated on my machine though as its intended for the Chinese market, so mileage could vary. There may be a sure fire way of getting Office activated without having to contact support, I just didn't find it.

Here's the video tutorial I went through when installing Windows on the machine too and went fine for me:

Is the OS in English?

Kind of, you can change language to English but I ended reinstalling windows from a USB stick. Got this for £579 a few weeks ago.
Anyone know whether you're likely to get stung for customs charges if you order thjs from Gearbest?
The only issue for me is the screen, at 15.6, I want a higher res than FHD. Otherwise looks a good deal.

If it's coming from Hong Kong then yes, you will have to pay duty on it.

I've bought a few items from Gearbest, including this laptop (except I bought the i5 version). I've used EU Express for the past few items and all items have been delivered, with no additional fees by DPD...but you're importing from China, so there's no guarantee you won't get hit with additional fees, I haven't though.

You didn't need to. All you had to do was use the bootable USB and change the language. Takes 2 minutes.

Nope, the laptop was shipped from Gearbests HK warehouse. Delivery was between 20-30 days too (can't remember exactly).

No, you will not. I've ordered the i5 version of this laptop and it arrived safely. It did however take almost two weeks to arrive. Nevertheless, this I a dope deal I love everything about this laptop it runs smooth and has had no issues with anything I throw at it (unless its a 2018 AAA Game ).

Twas Priority Line from memory, Expedited is usually DHL (I think) and reading around you will end up paying customs with this method

Edit: Just been through the checkout process myself and it doesn't default to the EU Express shipping method (did when I purchased the laptop) but I think you'll be fine with any of the free Priority Line options.

No idea where you heard that, but that is some big time false information. Stock is shipped from whichever warehouse you pick when ordering, not when choosing which type of shipping preference you have.

You also get a free key for Microsoft word, you can get the key before you wipe the chinese edition and then the reactivate it on your english laptop
Good luck if it develops a fault!
Got the i5 version of this laptop, proper beast - incredibly quick, great for uni and great battery life (10 hours or so). Screen is a decent size, not needing anything over 1080p as the PPI is fine. Brilliant build quality and nice keyboard. Added bonus of a fingerprint reader for signing in too. I got mine for about £620 so this is a very very good price for this laptop!
HOT - i7 for the price of an i5.
Got my i5 back in February from LightInTheBox for £619 delivered.

It comes through Europe if you choose normal post, so no duty.

Not sure if there's an insured option though - £650 is alot to risk for uninsured post....
Keyboard might not have £ sign I suppose?

Surely you mean anything under 0401 needs to be upgraded, mine came with:
BIOS Version/Date INSYDE Corp. XMAKB5R0P0502, 13/10/2017
and I get over 3000 MB/s
crystalmark.info/en/…ad/

Before you erase the Chinese Windows, boot into it, fire up MS Office and link it to your Outlook/Hotmail account. After you've installed a clean English version of Windows and Office, just activate it by signing into your MS account.
When you create a clean Windows 10 Boot USB stick, make sure you add all the latest version of the drivers (couple of sites have dumps of these or you can get them from the Xiaomi Official site). None of my device drivers (keypad, modem, sound, graphics card) were picked up installed by windows during the clean install from USB.
I would also recommend getting a UK wall plug like this one, not keen on the cheap 2 pin to UK adapter I got with mine.

The US keyboard layout has been the only negative point for me. I've ended up putting little sticky labels on the affected keys.

Yes and EU express usually means its coming from within the EU! So can safely assume they have been picking the EU warehouse option. Most chinese sellers use DHL, TNT, UPS and a few others to ship from China. Please say sorry so we can move on from your false information claims.
I don’t want to start a fanboy thing but I’ve long coveted a MacBook, and fully intended to have a dual boot Mac/OS.
Is this a good alternative (for the Windows half)?
Will it play games like Fortnite at a decent setting?
What happens if it develops a fault?
What’s people’s experiences in general?

Its pretty expensive, so needs careful consideration......and in my mind I’m debating this or a 2 year old MacBook with a year left of AppleCare.
any guidance would be great thanks.

pretty sure a macbook would struggle with fortnite as well... other thing, whilst dual boot windows does work there is something just not quite right about it for some reason, i think maybe its cos the scrolling on the trackpad, which is a real shame cos a dual boot is a great solution for most

Nope, anything under which still retains the x4 PCIe fix and still has the ability to overclock / undervolt. Good breakdown: here (I flashed 300 as I don't think there's a flashable 401 available at the mo). 401 is the one to stay on though if you'd like to tinker.

Just a word of caution, I got this a couple months ago and its developed a rattling sort of noise coming from the fan which is extremely annoying. Looks like others have also developed something similar.

how did you get it for 580?

No. You have to do a fresh install of Windows 10. You cannot add English to the language list either because that requires a separate license to do so. If you can install a Windows image on a USB with Rufus, you've already done the hardest part. It's an easy enough work-around, still worth.
8GB RAM is pitiful for a "Pro" laptop.
is it still valid? I'm seeing 860 when open the page

I think thermals may be a slight issue when gaming, it runs on a low voltage "U" level CPU so isn't exactly designed for gaming. Fortnite will run, but mileage may vary.
