Bit surprised to see so much interest in this - I thought decking was dead & buried, partly due to TV shows no longer pushing it as it is last year's "flavour of the month," and more significantly linked to the danger: Wet & the algae growth make timber decking into a skating rink, so far I know 2 people who have broken bones, one elbow, and a collar bone!

No danger if you spray it yearly with anti-fungal (I just use 20p value bleach from tescos). Do it once in Spring and thats it. Far less maintenance than paving slabs and look a lot better.

i have found these extremley slippy, not to say its not a good price, need to take advice above perhaps, thanx both

yep - spray over with some bleach and all the green disappears overnight. Same goes for paving slabs too which are far more treacherous IMHO.

Does anyone know how high the actual decking itself is? Rather than with the fence bit. Looks about 6-8 inches but would like a confirmation?
Thanks

Regarding the bleach trick do you dilute it first?

does that work on patio paving as well i get loads of weeds coming through all the time whoever laid it years ago didnt do it properly i dont think, im sick of using the pressure washer it all comes back too quick

The value bleach from supermarkets is diluted enough already. I just keep old spray trigger bottles and fill with the value bleach.

it wokds on patio etc for fungal growth (algae) but no good for weeds. If your slabs were laid properly then they should have just under an inch between them and filled with mortar. Cowboys just butt the slabs together.

Weeds will always come through loose mortar so in the long run its better to get the mortar raked out and filled again.

I use sodium chlorate which is a 'kill all' mixture (about £10 from B&Q) which will last about 3-4 years if you buy the large size and have a medium patio (15ft. by 15ft)

As my dogs get access to the paved area in my garden, I use SALT a couple of times a year - 13p a 500g box in Lidl last time I stocked up - use about 2 or 3 packs a time, brush it in using a soft yard brush into any cracks.
Pressure washing makes paving "new" but is hard work, uses a lot of water & power, and it is best to brush fine sand into any cracks (with added salt!) to keep it more stable (or point it up properly if you can).

For algae, there is a product, Armillotox (13 quid a bottle, but it dilutes) which is far better for inhibiting growth than bleach, but again I don't use anything remotely toxic where pets or kids go, or where it drains into planted areas (you can use Armillotox to kill LAWN Moss though!)

Regardless of how moss/algae free, decking is still deadly when wet, and the only solution I have seen is varnish it with added fine grit, but this is a bodge of a solution :-(
There are synthetic decking "timbers" with slip resistance, but I have no experience of them in practice.

Well i use 20p bleach and it kills all the algae overnight compeltely so i cant see how any £13 product could be better.

My decking is never slippery even when wet but this may be due to its age (4 years) so it has developed a roughish surface which I prefer. its only when people start varnishing them (especially with deck varnish) that they are asking for trouble.

It has a residual action, reducing as it wears & washes off of course, and doesn't kill the lawn at the edge of the paving or tarmac area, as it would do if I used bleach due to the way my drive drains.

this Armillo thing, is it better than Jeyes liquid? I thought Jeyes was good for cleaning patios. I had the same problem of weeds coming out from the joints and I brushed kiln dried sand into them. Should I do the salt treatment as well? thanks a lot.

Jeyes fluid is a nasty stuff that I doubt has any legitimate place in a domestic situation, should have went the same route as creosote and sticking children up chimneys! :-( See data sheeet here: futures-supplies.co.uk/dow…pdf

The salt has worked a treat for me on paving (badly laid, before I moved in, so I know that problem!), but the front drive is tarmac, and the moss builds inches thick if I leave it, as it gets very little sun so the Armillatox has been better there.
Note spelling... I thought it had an o, not an a!

Depends on how your paths etc. are. the salt is cheap, takes minutes to put down, and needs no special handling, so try it first if you can, anyway, if it is nnot going to kill other plants too .Armillotox is a bit of a hunt to find, (although I got it at my nearest garden centre, but most don't seem to have it now) so you might not get it easily other than online. It is a bit toxic, (so needs careful handling) but not in the same league as Jeyes fluid which has one same ingredient, and also a combination of other toxic contents too, (I have not even mentioned Sodium Chlorate which someone else mentioned earlier!) :-(

The data sheet gives the analysis I think, and whereas Jeyes fluid has other products, the armillatox is the same main ingredient, but with just soap! (Perhaps the reason it wets & clings well to the moss?)

Thing is, people use Jeyes fluid INDOORS still.. you would be amazed to find cleaners still chucking it about in places like pub toilets! Why would anyone want the place stinking of it, regardless of the nature of it?

Thanks nihcaj, this has been a very good discussion although we have gone off-topic from the original post :-D

It doesn't have much of a description as to what exactly is included.
Does anyone know if the framework (joists) and deck screws are included or not?
Cheers

All the screws are included,All the wood is cut to size.
The framework is actually made up of decking boards ( 8 of them).
BUT none of the holes are predrilled. It's still fairly easy to put together

It's the height of a decking board,as these are used to make the frame,so probably about six to seven inches with the top boards.
Just measured it, six inches including the top boards

so lets get this right.......

is this JUST the 8x8 flat deck area ONLY

Me too ! Came to £146.70 delivered !

This is a fantastic price, as its selling on the Wickes website for £339!
I bought something similar about 5 years ago from B&Q, and paid about £400 then. Having checked it is the same manufacturer as the one I bought before, so know it will be good quality.
It gets a HOT from me, I've just ordered two with the 20% discount.

Fantastic deal, but codes not working for me.
