80Gb Twin-Tuner Freeview PVR reduced from £99.99 to £49.99.

Model: Tevion PVR801.

Spotted in a nearby store yesterday (Wed 18th Oct).

Not sure if the price has been reduced Countrywide but thought that this was worth posting on HotUKDeals.

stuffmag.co.uk/hot…938

It's listed features are:
(According to digitalspy.co.uk)

* Twin tuner 80GB PVR with Freeview,
* Can record two channels at the same time, while watching one,
* Timeshift function, play record and pause simultaneously,
* EPG & Now and Next
* Interactive text (MHEG 5)
* Twin Scarts
- MacNewbieInTraining

From what i've read on various forums there was a printing error in the original specification advertised by Aldi. This product cannot record two channels at the same time but record one channel whilst watching another.

HTH.

Plenty of stock at Aldi, Crosshands yesterday. Don't think that this offer was store specific and this is not a brand new store that has just opened with opening offers.

Hi, Just added additional info just before reading your reply.

Plenty of stock at Aldi, Crosshands yesterday. Don't think that this offer was store specific and this is not a brand new store that has just opened with opening offers.

Cannot vouch whether or not this is a good PVR. Think Humax is the way to go but these are selling for half the price of what Aldi were originally selling for and is half the price of Argos 80Gb Twin Tuner offering.

Would like to know whether or not the hard disk drive can be upgraded to let's say a 160Gb or 250Gb. Any ideas anyone?.

Thank you.

Hi, No link was posted however at a guess HotUKDeals add a 'generic' link to the Aldi web-site.

These were originally on sale Dec of last year and most recently June of this year (to the best of my knowledge).

Aldi promptly remove product details from their web-site upon their weekly offers expiring. Am trying to find more info' on this product. Think that it's manufactured by Technosonic but not 100%.

For £49.99 this isn't a bad buy (providing it does what it say's on the tin and reliably as i've read that there have been quite a lot of problems with this PVR). Thankfully Aldi's return policy is very good so worth trying to source one of these if you're wanting to buy an 80Gb Twin Tuner PVR.

Nope, it cannot. You may be able to plug a 160Gb Drive in, but the maximum the unit will be able to use is ~127Gb due to limitations in the hardware.

If you are really interested in the technical reasons why this is a limit, you can have a read here:

Hi X10, Am almost certain that i'd found a forum thread somewhere yesterday evening that confirmed that someone had upgraded theirs to an 160Gb but i'd not made a note of the URL :-(.

Do you know whether or not it's a case of literally opening the lid (voiding the warranty), unplugging the existing 80Gb PATA IDE hard disk drive and replacing with a 160Gb PATA IDE hard disk drive and reformatting using the software that I can only guess is running on the PVRs on-board flash memory/ROM?.

Thank you.

Thanks MacNewbieInTraining

LoL, was just about to post that, but thought I'd do a quick refresh in case anyone beat me to it

errr .. why are you encouraging people to buy it then ? - DOH !!!

Seems people either love it or hate it, its gonna be down to buying it and see if you like but I think at the price you cant go wrong.

I've had one of these for about 4 months now, and I think it's excellent. Sure, you can't record two programs at one time, but you can record one and view another, which is good enough for me. You can also pause live TV, which is great if you get an unexpected phone call etc. Picture quality of recorded material is just as good as live. I think it's great, and at less than £50 it's a no-brainer. Get it, if you really don't like it Aldi will let you take it back.

No problem Edi.

Like i've said hope this is of some use. Shouldn't be store specific from what i've gathered. Guess that anyone interested in buying one of these from their nearest store can ask for them to price-match the Crosshands, Carmarthenshire store.

Literally spotted this last-minute whilst at check-out. Wasn't advertised anywhere. Thought was one box only remaining in the store (which was opened) but asked and was told that there were stocks in their stockroom.

A previous customer who bought one of these said that he was very impressed with the product and that it was a good buy.

The feedback on several forums that i've quickly read are mixed (a lot of negative feedback however worth a try at £49.99 i'd thought).

Excellent. Thank you X10. Think that i'd like to upgrade to 160Gb but not 100% sure on that as do not really want to invalidate the warranty.

The warranty by the way is another cause for confusion. Aldi have sold lots of these my girlfriends and mine included with no warranty cards. There's an 0870 number to ring for customer service (do not like 0870 numbers :-( ) but posts that i'd read last night confirm that the product carries a Tevion/Aldi 3-year warranty. Think that it's a 1-year Aldi money back and 2-years Tevion repair warranty. Who's made this product i'm not sure but it's all part and parcel of Medion at a guess as they generally market electronic consumer and PC items via Aldi stores.

Tried and failed to find pics of this product online.

Bought one of these last december from Aldi £100.It's labelled Technosonic not Tevion. Can confirm that it does not record 2 at a time, but you can watch another channel whilst recording another.Had a few teething problems which were eventually sorted after automatic firmware updates.Occasionly freezes up and has to be switched off at the mains and rebooted. If you want a basic pvr this has to be a bargain. You can pay more just for some freeview boxes.

Yup, that is a problem and possibly not worth it given that it's hit and miss with this unit.

Depends on where you buy the unit as different countries brand it differently.

Their number is not listed on that web site - so if things go wrong you could be paying more for premium rate calls than the unit itself

Just had a look on the Aldi site and they do not give tele nos for their stores...and they are not in the telephone directory....so do I travel the 5 miles to my nearest store on the off chance that they have these in stock????

Hi, No problem. Go for it!. Good luck!. ;-)
If no stock ask the store manager to ring around the nearest stores (they're usually obliging) and ask that they put one on hold for you to collect (suggestion, not telling you what to do of course).

Thank you X10. Cannot recommend saynoto0870.com highly enough. That site has saved a lot of hard earned cash. Not checked the 0870 number printed in the booklet though but shall post findings here this evening.

Kind Regards.

Hi, I'm afraid that i'm unable to answer that question as i'm a PVR-newbie. However no doubt there are other HotUKDeals members that can answer this for you.

Sites that i've found to be quite interesting are as follows and they might've already answered your question:

Three of these were sold at Aldi yesterday afternoon. Staff said that this item had been reduced several days possibly weeks ago. They were marked down from £99.99 to £49.99. Think that they've been sold for £89.99 as well as £99.99. Would not have posted if i'd thought that this was a pricing error or other stores wouldn't sell for £49.99. At a guess this is discontinued stock that Aldi are selling in readiness for new stock to arrive (probably newer models with perhaps a larger hard disk drive fitted). Aldi did exactly the same with the Medion PNA96500 GPS similar (if not the same as) as the one that Medion are selling on their web-site for £99.99. Was originally £229.99 but was reduced to £149.99 to sell remaining stock. Tried to source one of these but failed dismally.

Just went to the main Aldi store and depot in Glasgow and the manager said that they don't have any record of PVRs being sold in Scotland over the past 3 months. He couldn't comment for England though as they run a different schedule for items.

So, fellow Scots. Save yourself the rainy walk...
