am I correct in saying that this has no digital tuner and therefore no epg which is one reason for getting a digital HD recorder.

Caution - very few hd recorders that have a tuner fitted (e.g. freeview) can record from a sky or cable box!

This unit can record from an outside tuner, digibox, cable, etc so it's a good deal at this price.

Why not? Isn't it just a case of using a Scart lead to connect Sky & the HD DVD and then recording (or DVD burning) via AV setting rather than an aerial lead & the tuner?

What you say is true for Humax type freeview HD only recorders but I have never heard it said for full HD DVD recorders.

Chris

Most cheap hd recorders can imput only via their inbuilt tuner e.g. freeview - they are cheap because they are built to a price! so this unit is exceptional in that respect.

have a look at the av forums for this topic in detail (loads of upset people who didn't know this before they paid out) but basically most hd recorders that can accept imput from a sky or a cable box are £300+

Are you saying that the latest Sony .....870 and Panasonic ......77 HD DVD recorders, both of which are £200-£250, are not capable of recording a programme to either HD or DVD which comes from a Sky+ box?

I ask as I am considering buying one for exactly that!

Chris

I think people are getting a little confused here, as I understand hdd only recorders commonly known as freeview pvrs at the lower end of the market can only record from the inbuilt tuner while DVD recorders with a hard drive can take external source and record to hard drive, tho correct me if I,m wrong

DVD recorders do not have built in tuners and can record from any source - BUT - combined units e.g. DVD/HD recorders like this WITH an inbuilt tuner like Freeview generally cannot!

If you are told that a sub £100 unit will record from cable or sky ask for it in writing! lol. The vast majority will only record through their own inbuilt tuner - THAT'S WHY THEY ARE CHEAP!

Go to the av forums and read up the stories from people who made this mistake.

This unit is a good deal for anyone wanting to record from any source.

DVD recorders DO usually have built intuners and most today have freeview or analogue and freeview. The same goes for HDD DVD recorders. Both types of machine have a variety of inputs via scart, s-video and firewire for connection to Sky boxes Cable boxes camcorders etc. 160 GB HDD DVD recorders by Sony and Panasonicwith all these facilities can be had for around £200. With other makes from £100 as we see here upwards.

These must not be confused with the Freeview HDD recorder (PVR) a la Humax Topfield or even Digiliogic as this is a totallly different beast and does not have inputs for external devices or facilities for recording to DVD. They even record in a different format on their HDD compared with the HDD DVD recorders such as the one in the deal.

Leadbeter,

That is my understanding as well.

Chris

anyone got a manual for this dhr-5006. I know it's not meant to be much good but it's gotta be better than nothing!
