A free tea or coffee - bring your own mug @ Waitrose (My waitrose card holders)

Found 10th Apr
Free Tea or coffee when you shop at waitrose, but you now have to bring your own coffee cup.

----------------------------------------
That’s why we’re proud to announce that by autumn this year, we will have removed takeaway coffee cups from all our stores.

We are still delighted to offer you a free hot drink whenever you shop with us. We just need your help. Once takeaway cups are removed we’d like you to bring in your own reusable cup.

We’re starting with our stores in Banbury, Billericay, Ipswich, Newmarket, Norwich, Sudbury, Wymondham, Upminster and Little Waitrose Fitzroy Street on the 30th April.

And we’ll be in touch again soon to let you know when the change will happen in your local store. But please do feel free to use your own reusable cup before then.

If you take your own cup in, how are they going to police this?

System already agreed at board level. They're building Alexa into the coffee machines and you have to ask for your coffee to be dispensed. Any trace of a London or South Essex accent, or Estuary English, or any hint of being a Brexit supporter, and it just refuses and squirts hot water at you to get you out of the store.

Waitrose is taking back control. The middle classes are regaining their sovereignty.
Because everybody keeps a reusable cup in their back pocket? I'm all for recyclable cups but this is getting silly, and unhygenic.

Gorgeous ladies shop at Waitrose

I'm a 6'3" bloke, but in the right light I'm gorgeous
Waitrose used to be the "daddy" for customer benefits, recently they've axed the My Picks 20% discount off 10 items, now the coffee is going, the "free" newspapers for spending a tenner will be next.
Oh well back to Lidl's!!

This is not really a new deal but some news about their existing free coffee tea policy.

Yes I agree. Also you need to be a Waitrose card holder. Just filling up your cup is likely to get you in some very hot water with waitrose
If you take your own cup in, how are they going to police this? Is it a fiver minimum spend?
Coffee Security?
Receipt checking?
Invasive body searches?
Waitrose have scrooged back on their card discounts. I do not approve. Ive had one load of vouchers so far as a replacement for ongoing card discounts.
I might write to the Daily Mail (free) about it all.
Thanks for the update op....

Rather than dive into your pit of pedantry with the 'actually this isn't technically a new offer and by the way the moon landing never actually happened, and another thing......' - type comments you should all be getting worried about the even higher numbers of pensioners that will now be queuing for their free bus 9:23 every morning to get to the freebie counter. The transportation and health and safety implications - not to mention the lack of available seats, as they'll now be taken up by the biggest mugs commercially available - are not worth thinking about.

Now, if this had been 'bring your glass for free beer', I'd be very interested.

Great cup of coffee abd will motivate me to always bring my own reusable mug. Heat!
Only way to police this is either a token from the cashier or scanning your Waitrose card at coffee machines.

No you don't need to spend £5 as I asked one of the girls who works there. You could buy a single banana and get your coffee for free

Better class of ladies shop at Waitrose - wanna bag a posh burd then M&S and Waitrose is your mission lol
Even if they are over 60 - Toy Boy time!!

You will also have to use a specific size of mug as those travel mugs wont fit under the coffee machine nozzle.
7cm or less!

Yes, I saw that with the weird explanation that staff have had 'barista training' & they're using a higher quality coffee bean, so it won't be free, but all you tired shoppers that need a break, can get a free inferior one from the machine and you can stand up and drink it!
They also say that they are 'listening to the views of customers' - I don't think so, they've never asked me and it might become 'their Waitrose' - not 'MYWAITROSE'
COLD - this is just a massive cost reduction activity - own cups equals less people taking the free coffee option, and free coffee gone in the cafe
Waitrose this is not good.....the PYO has gone (really people found this confusing what a lame excuse)
I haven't received any targeted 'special offers' other than 2 rubbish till receipts one for half price milk and one other which was completely random
Looks like it's back to Sainsburys for me

I am quite annoyed about them ceasing my picks. And I didn't get a voucher either. They are making every effort to reduce their customers!
Annoying. First the minimum expenditure for a free weekday newspaper increases from £5 to £10. Then you have to spend something to get a free coffee. Then pick your own offers is axed. Now you have to bring your own coffee cup... I mean that’s fine if you do your weekly shop at Waitrose. But I often just pop in whilst I’m in town to see if there’s any decent reduced items or special offers. I’m not going to carry a reusable coffee cup around with me, just on the off chance that I go into Waitrose, and that I subsequently find something I want to buy

Think about it. It's a business, I like reduced stuff, but, what they really want is people going in to do a normal shop. It's still a good deal if you want a (virtually) free drink.

Yes I know all that. And I was going to add a disclaimer at the end that, as someone who shops in Waitrose for reductions and free coffee, they won’t be too upset at losing my business. But my comment wasn’t saying that it’s a bad business decision, it was saying that it’s annoying for me as an individual customer, so I didn’t think it was necessary to point that out.

Life's tough! Not meant nastily. It was a good deal, most probably hugely abused. Not too hard to have a re-usable cup handy, end up like a cart horse with plastic bags and cups about my person!

Come on, you gotta have something to do once retired!
I think more myWaitrose customers will be upset that the FREE hot drink is no longer going to be offered in the Cafe from mid May; ie free hot drink only take away from the self service machine(s), and later in the year, only with that reusable cup!

There was a notice on the coffee machine today saying more news later eg with potential myWaitrose offers on food IF you buy a coffee in the cafe.
