I know nothing about this acer.. however from the spec & £118.99 for a 23 inch screen seems a good deal to me... only down side is no HDMI input for a HD TFT ?? -- Your going to need a decent graphics card....

Can a monitor be HD if it hasn't got DVI capabilities? Regardless, this is a cracking deal for a 23" LCD TFT monitor.

very hot deal

yes it can,

VGA can do HD resolutions,
but DVI/HDMI would be better.

Why do they still make VGA only monitors? I have not used VGA in ages.

23 inch with full HD resolution you can "almost" watch blue rays on it. Oh wait, you can't, VGA does not support HDCP.

Monitors with DVI and HDMI are classed as TVs and are Taxed accordingly ,This is the reason they sell monitors with just VGA,You can have one with DVI but it will cost more,

Does it decode on the fly or you have to rip it to HDD first?
I want to get blue ray drive for laptop, as it's cheaper than getting portable blue ray player. I do not always have an option of HDMI avaialble.

i'm pretty sure it runs in the background & u use a player such as Power DVD to playback the BD/HD DVD - AnyDVD HD will allow you to playback the disc without the Region Coding, AACS, HDCP.....

Nice, I'll give it a try.

don't need one, but looks like a HOT deal

Yeah ,Its a 14% import duty that the EU adds to the cost of a monitor with a digital input,

Wow, I guess it was right decision on my part to haul one over from US, instead of buying it here.

no no no! VGA does not matter for watching HD! HDCP is only an issue when using a digital connection, in this case you need a HDCP compat graphics card and HDCP compat monitor. If you are using VGA the graphics card converts the signal using its RAMDACS and it is then analouge - not encrypted in anyway. HDCP is a digital only encryption.

The film studios have the option to COMPLETELY DISABLE sending a HD signal over a VGA output so it's still potentially an issue. They can choose to enable this option per title so they can turn it on at any time in the future. See Wikipedia for info on Image Constraint Token.

Correct. However, if you try to play blue ray (which is always encrypted) it would not work on VGA monitor because it does not support HDCP. Most modern video cards support HD decoding and HDCP. Most DVI also support HDCP, so you are all set simply by having both. This monitor is guaranteed not to display any blue rays at HD quality.

Your video card would still play blue rays on VGA input, but not in HD quality. Encryption would force video down sampling to non-HD quality. This is, of course, not a problem if whatever you are watching is not encrypted. Monitor will have HD resolution for any non encrypted movie.

I did not know of workaround suggested by Hornet and will definitely give it a try.

This is a great price, but silly without HDMI/DVI

I am just waiting for the 23" to hit the £99.99 barrier.

Of course it can. HD is about resolution, not analogue or digital...

+1. VGA is fine and better (360, the image seems softer) in some circumstances. The whole HDCP thing is nonsense. It hasn't stopped pirates. Blame the idiots behind HDCP, not VGA ports.

Looks like a good price for a big screen. Never liked the look of Acer monitors personally though. Thanks for the info about DVI/HDMI ports banging up the prices of monitors, never realised that before
