I've spent many, many hours researching into the perfect laptop for me and finally found the one, as I'm currently typing this deal up on my new laptop! Before leaving feedback please check the bechmarking of this graphics card at notebookcheck.com, as if you're looking to play games this offers fantastic gaming performance for the price you are paying. If posting laptops that are cheaper I expect to see the benchmarking be at least equal or greater on the graphics please Gotta be comparitive after all!

One of the most awesome features for me is being able to use this as a Blu-Ray player that I can hook up to the 42" HD telly... and it looks truly great on the big screen!

I'm a real Warcraft-head, and it was one of the things I was looking at in purchasing a new laptop, for those who know what I'm on about you can get 30fps on max settings whilst sitting in Shattrath

Of course there are many other cheaper laptops out there... but if it's gaming and good film support you're after, here's what you're getting for your money:

Processor Type: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750
Processor speed: (2 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache)
Memory Size: 3 GB MB
Memory Type: DDR2 RAM

The spec really is exceptional for the price and the laptop itself is stunning, I am very, very pleased with my purchase so felt I should share it with you all.

Oh, and don't forget the 2.5% Quidco!

Get it at Dixons too but save another £25 with SAVE25 code

Do you know, I saw that a code which was ENTER5 at Dixons which worked up until the day I decided to buy the laptop... tried entering it on that day and it didn't work! Absolutely right though, this code works fine. An even better price for this amazing laptop. Though Dixons do seem a little quick to pull these codes away... so at least if there are any issues with the codes in the future you've got this good, solid price to fall back on.

Is the graphic card any good, is this an equivalent of a Geforce 8400?.

Blows the Geforce 8400M GT out of the water, mate I did alot of research into it, take the 3D Mark '05 Scores for the cards, followed by the FPS for Doom 3 @ 1024x768.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: Score 7388
Doom 3: - Ultra 1024x768
min: 70.9, avg: 79, max: 93.1 fps

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT: Score 3587
Doom 3: - Ultra 1024x768
min: 38.3, avg: 49, max: 59.8 fps

Figures are from notebookcheck.com benchmarks. I'm really impressed with this ATI card actually and after being a little dissapointed with my recent purchase of an 8800 GT for my desktop, I may well be switching to an ATI card for my desktop. I hear ATI are offering more bang for your buck in general these days.

More or less a Nividia 8600M equivalent.

OP; what's the screen resolution?

1920 x 1080

Actually another site claims 1366 x 768

OP please confirm which is correct?

Original Poster

This should be able to handle CoD4 & Crysis fine with a tweaking of the settings if it can handle Warcraft's Shattrath at 30FPS.

]Click Here for a good comparison and benchmark results of the most popular graphics cards. Was a very useful resource in picking my new laptop.

The 8600M GT Comparison isn't way off the mark... but again this card outperforms the Geforce...
3D Mark '05 Scores for the cards, followed by the FPS for Doom 3 @ 1024x768:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: Score 7388
Doom 3: - Ultra 1024x768
min: 70.9, avg: 79, max: 93.1 fps

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: Score 6175
Doom 3: - Ultra 1024x768
min: 53.9, avg: 79, max: 100.6 fps

Note the tighter consistency with the Framerates, despite the GeForce having a slightly higher max FPS it's also got a considerably lower min FPS.

Confirming, also, that the resoultion is 1366 x 768. It is perfect for the screen size and I guarantee you will be blown away watching anything in HD on this screen. Having not viewed content in HD on a Laptop before I wasn't prepared for how good it looks

Any other Q's just ask away!

i bought this laptop as well but must say im disapointed thing stll freezes up when doing basic things like surfng with this spec i never thought ths would happen

I bought the above lappy and its great, even manages to run race 07 1024x768 with everything rammed up.

It should'nt realy freeze up ; have you switched off some of the Vista servces ? if so are you sure the laptop isn't faulty ?

If you have'nt switched off some of the Vista services its worth googling to find out how.

I second this... Acer laptops seem pretty reliable and I've had absolutely no lock-ups with mine. Most tech support can determine why your PC is locking up so it's worth finding out if it's a software or a hardware issue and taking the appropriate action. Based on how young this model of laptop is as well, it should of course be under warantee

Not sure if you are aware but there are currently problems with some of the Ndivia chips used in laptop graphics.... not much clarity on what is happening but the strong implication is that there will be a much greater (and earlier) failure rate for such chips.... therefore right now I would view having an ATI based chip for laptop graphics as a definite advanatge.

Nice spec of laptop (although more RAM might be nice), but the little remote on the left is a lot like marmite - love it or hate it!

I'd avoid, Acer laptops hardly have a great reputation.

Asus/Samsung/Toshiba/Dell/HP are better purchases, Acer is in the same category as Advent.

The 5930G has a better processor and graphics card, (but minus blu-ray) for roughly the same price- it's a better deal for me since I have no use for Blu-Ray, but I can see the appeal of this one. No vote either way.

Would be good if the OP can verify if this particular model of laptop suffers from these problems.

rubbish post

The resolution is more than likely going to be 1366x768

The full HD model costs much more.

also, according to notebookreview, the graphics card falls in the "Performance" Category, with these cards being slightly higher:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
Nvidia GeForce 9600M-GT
Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT/Nvidia GeForce 9650M-GS (same card)
Nvidia GeForce 9700M-GT

This laptop, being ATI, does not suffer from any of the Nvidia mentioned issues. This seems to be, like every other Acer product I've bought, a very well-built and sturdy laptop. Temperatures are looking alright too.

Correct, it's a 1366x768 resolution which is fine for a 16" widescreen

Seconded!

You always get what you pay for, if you want quality and reliability - Sony or Toshiba.

Never heard anyone describe Acer as the perfect laptop manufacturer.

what rubbish so you saying sony or toshiba never have problems? just because something costs more doesnt mean its better

I would never buy an ACER computer. The post sales support is awful. We bought one at work and it was very problematic. Getting them out to fix it was a nightmare and the engineers were very poor. Took many visits replacing many parts (motherboard and power supply). I would recommend buying a better branded laptop.

why is this getting hotter when you can get it £25 cheaper at dixons, and if you go through cashbackkings(3%) & use an egg card if you have one u can get it for £540 potentially?

ive been looking at getting this laptop for the past week but i can't make my mind up between this and the 6930G that pcworld also has. They are both the same price and pretty much the same spec apart from the 6930G has a centrino2 CPU with a 800 fsb compared to the 6920G 667 fsb and the 6930G has a 256mb nvidia 9300 compared to the 6920G's 512mb ati 3650.

which is better folks???? help!!!!

Toshiba are an exceptionally good brand, but please don't embarrass yourself by classing Sony as high quality. The were in the 80's and 90's and are still leeching from that good reputation that they once had. Sony products are very, very average these days and I've had a car stereo and 2 Playstations pack in on me, not to mention many friends having issues with sony products as well.

Yes - it's ideal for this and I hook it up to my 42" and it looks great.

It really isn't. It's solidly built and the design is lovely. The panel on the side can be switched off using a "hold" function as well if it doesn't appeal to you - I personally love it

For the people questioning build quality or the side panel I would definitley reccomend looking at the laptop in store first so you can see first hand the build quality because it doesn't feel even remotely cheap!

This machine has been available for months now from John Lewis. Comes with free delivery and a two year guarantee.
