I have found this on the Comet website for what seems a very reasonable price. I believe the next nearest price was posted a couple of weeks ago from Argos at £587. The same model is in Comet for £550 or you can have a cpu upgrade and a bigger hdd for another £50. The standout point is the 1gb 9600m gt. It really is 1gb as I have seen this laptop in my local store. I am interested to know if this RAM on the gpu is DDR2 or DDR3 though?

why are people voting cold......can you recomend a laptop with this spec for cheaper ??

Nice deal for the spec on this laptop.

Here is a review on notebook check

]http//ww…tml

Looks pretty good, only thing to note is the strange resolution on the screen - 1366x768

And @OP - DDR3 based on review

Yup, pretty good spec for the price. I have just ordered my Acer with an 18.4" TFT 1920 x 1080 display, so am waiting for delivery guy with antisipation.

Acer Aspire 8930 - 844G32Bn Gemstone / Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz / 4GB / 320GB / 18.4' / Blu-Ray / Vista Home Premium / Laptop / Notebook (LX.ASY0X.077)

Needed the big screen for showing clients photo shoots. Expensive but hope it's worth the extra.

Nice....seems hot to me!

It is a 16" screen, I assume that accounts for the weird resolution.

Pretty decent gaming laptop for £550, wow.

This laptop really confuses me. All my research so far has led me to believe that the graphics card is DDR2 memory. The Acer website does not even seem to properly list this model but does mention a 512 mb 9600gt with DDR2. Just as I thought I had sussed it I found this direct.tesco.com/q/R…spx on the tesco website. This seems to be the upgraded version which is also on the comet website for just £599. As well as the HDD and CPU upgrade which I already knew about it also directly states that the gpu is GDDR3.

Could it be that the the upgraded spec for £50 more includes not only upgrades to the processor and hard drive but also a change from DDR2 to DDR3 memory on the graphics card? It seems unlikely but if true then those extra 50 smackers are well worth it. It would be a beast for under £600. I don't know how to go about confirming this though!

I purchased one of these from comet last week, after 4 days the subwoofer went, i really dont reccomend it.

as stated on the argos topic the argos model has 1gb ddr2 graphics. and i own it too so i would recommend it as for the price its the cheapest gaming laptop even if you dont use it for gaming its still great.
for the argos threads see: hotukdeals.com/ite…6i/

my personal review here: hotukdeals.com/ite…=19

The weird resolution is the standard resolution for 720p hdtv panels.

Hi, I'm slightly confused. The spec that Comet lists does not specify whether its the GT or GS graphics?

I'm looking at the following on Comet and this one doesn't specify either:

comet.co.uk/sho…G32

How do you know what graphics are in there, especially as Comet don't list the lx.0001.445 (etc) type number to identify them?

Please help as I don't really want to end up with the GS!

the one at argos as in the one i have is the 1gb 9600gt ddr2 graphics
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h296/computerman_01/argosacer6930g1gb9600gt.jpg

Anyone know if it carries the 64bit version of Vista?

I mean, I assume so, but you never know...

If this has the GT and 64bit Vista I'll have one for sure.

So i bought the laptop from comet-

comet.co.uk/sho…on1

And I previously owned this laptop-

pcworld.co.uk/mar…487

Now I the windows program rating thingy and the graphics came up as 5.1 on the Nvidia GT
1Mb GT card, whereas on the Ati 3650 512mb it had a rating of 5.6 :S. After reading all this DDR stuff, is the comet laptop completely wrongly put together or something?

Basically. What the hell?

rating graphics performance using the vista benchmark is unreliable run some frame rate tests on games or something like pcmark, 3dmark vantage etc.

I'm thinking of getting this laptop, the one that's £599 from comet. I'm just confused by the lack of information provided by comet on this laptop. Can anyone who's already bought it confirm whether or not the laptop has a fingerprint reader and gddr3 graphics.

Cheers

**** i just got a refurbished 6920g for £480, has blu ray etc but maybe should have got this

That is very different if you look at the processor or graphics card.

Good deal except for the low res. screen - does not do the decent 1gig graphics card justice.

Yeah...not really similar at all. That laptop has a slower CPU, less RAM and most importantly a really crappy graphics card. This laptop is well worth the £100 more.

This laptop is pants the graphics card runs ddr2 which is rubbish it has 4gb of ddr2 ram which is dirt cheap £26 for 4gb of Kingston from play and also runs Vista. New laptops come with dd3 and vista is dead in the water in October windows7 is out and for the guy that asked if its the 64bit version the answer to that is no. I would leave this alone its a rubbish made by the worst company there is Acer with customer care and children pretending to be technical support.

When my Acer laptop failed last year after 3 months Acer repaired it and the repair was that bad it was sent back again for an entire new case as they had broke all the clips round the screen and half the screws where missing the second time they bought it back all the new case was scratched it ended up with comet replacing it with a brand new one of a different make. The son had one a month a go and within 3 days it went back to Comet as it failed so that's 2 people on this short thread that have had these fail and all from Comet I'm sure at this price you can do way better. For me this is worse than cold its frozen

Pretty nifty laptop for the ££££s.

But if you're investing in something you want to last I'd consider another brand. Acer is fine but it ain't no Dell or HP in IME. I've had 2 lately (1 for me 1 for a relative) and my opinion is they're put together with whatever bits and pieces they can find -and at the last minute. A bit like Medion with less 'piano black' and less customer support.

If you need (or want) good backup (drivers, customer support, warranty) avoid. If you just want a super quick machine -with this spec- that does pretty much everything you want go for it. Good thing is it's Comet so they're easy to hassle.

The £599 one doesnt have DDR3 and it doesnt have a fingerprint reader. I am using one from comet at the moment. Good processor for the money though P7450. Does eveything I want for £600. No Blueray, but thats what the PS3 is for.

Thanks for letting me know. Does anyone know of one that does have ddr3 for around the £600 mark? I'm not too concerned about the fingerprint reader now. It's just that there's so many different versions of the 6930 that it's difficult to find the right one.

You won't get much performance increase at all with DDR3. All companies use the cheapest DDR3 sticks they can find which will have incredibably high latencies.

Dam Awesome Price. For a Pretty nice spec laptop.

good price but out of stock as it was when i checked it 2 days ago

Any idea if this is 64bit Vista?!

I was looking for a new laptop and saw this on the comet website but was out of stock, but after a bit of investigation, I found the SAVE50 comet discount which save you £50 on purchases over £600.

So I went for the £599 one ( comet.co.uk/sho…ion ) and added a 2gb usb drive at £7.99 jus to take over £600 reserved for instore collection last night collected today and paid £557 for the 2. On top of that they guy instore gave me a 4gb usb drive instead of a 2gb. But on the whole pretty pleased.

Only problem is I think yesterday was the last day for the vouchers so glad I reserved it last night, but may be useful to know if some more vouchers appear.

i got this laptop last week from comet, managed to get another £30 off the £549 price. Im not a too up on all the spec stuff but i love it. Before i had a sony and i was sick of sending it back to be fixed. This i hope will be better as my other half as had an Acer for the last 3 years and never had a problem. This runs very quickly and loaded up from first switching on in just a few minutes. If anyone wants to check any spec details on it (if you let me know how to ill find it) i'll post them, Voted hot as its a great deal.

Disagree on a couple of points here, the fact that its DDR2 RAM should hardly be a put off, for what this kind of laptop would be doing your not going to see a huge performance difference. Also not sure on your point about Vista, why should that point matter at all? Are you suggesting nobody buys a laptop until October? If somebody really doesn't like it, Windows 7 RC1 is currently available to the public anyway.

I do fully agree on the quality and customer care side though, I previously owned an Acer 6920g (pretty much the same design but with an ATI 3650 and the side touch panel controls) and its was very much love/hate but mostly hate. The main deal-breaker for me was the amount of flex on the keyboard, it was absolutely horrific and you really could push it down into the chassis, which meant that sometimes key presses would go unregistered. Also, the 6920g had some WiFi/Bluetooth etc hardware buttons on the right hand side and 9/10 times when I picked up the laptop there was so much flex in the case that the WiFi button would be depressed and my WiFi would shut off. The build quality overall was poor, especially the glossy bezel - I wiped it once as light as possible with a microfibre cloth and the thing scratched to high heaven. This laptop singularly put me off ever buying Acer again.

If your just interested in the specs/price though and if you can live with some pretty annoying build quality/design issues, I suppose this might be worth a look.
