Hi folks,

This is my first post, so go easy on me! But I've been searching for a decent multi-media laptop that could also cope with a fair degree of gaming & thought this was quite a decent deal!

There is quite a few different versions of this Acer model around i.e. this one doesn't come with Blu-ray & has 256 memory graphics as opposed to 516/1gb versions around but this is still a great price for this spec I think :-)

Cheers!
Andy

not really a good spec considering how cheap this £398.99 dell deal is hotukdeals.com/ite…du/
if the acer is brand new it might be worth it but since its a refurb its cold. Athough the dell laptop costs slightly more it has a better spec, and its brand new. The whole point of buying a refurbished Acer is to save money, but its just not cheap enough to justify buying a refurb.

same price in currys,dixons, its cheap gaming laptop.

I have to disagree with this comment. This is a gaming laptop, the Dell is not.

I have this lappy and am able to play L4D and CS:S with very good frame rates and even Crysis is playable. The Dell could not do this.

Very good price, voted hot.

on the topic it never mentioned the words gaming laptop, pcworld spec is wrong it says 256mb graphics.
acer website:
"Graphics

* NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT with up to 2303 MB of TurboCache™ (512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 VRAM, up to 1791 MB of shared system memory*), supporting NVIDIA® PureVideo™ HD technology, OpenEXR High Dynamic-Range (HDR) technology, Shader Model 4.0, Microsoft® DirectX® 10
(* depending on size of system memory)
* Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset with integrated 3D graphics, featuring Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500 (Intel® GMA X4500) with up to 358/384 MB of Intel® Dynamic Video Memory Technology 4.0 (8 MB of dedicated system memory, up to 350/376 MB of shared system memory*), supporting Microsoft® DirectX® 10
(* depending on size of system memory)
* DualView™ support
* MEPG-2/DVD acceleration, decoding
* WMV9 (VC-1) and H.264 (AVC) decoding
* HDMI™ (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) support
* Acer Arcade™ Deluxe featuring Acer CinemaVision™ and Acer ClearVision™ technologies"
so assuming it has the 9600mgt this should have 512mb gddr3 graphics and not 256mg graphics! examples of nvidia graphics card that have 256mb ram are the 8400 and 9300 GPU which are fairly low spec and useless at gaming

edit just read the whole first post it does say gaming, but its best to put the words gaming laptop in the title. It hink there lots of people like me who tend to skim read a long post, i just skimmed to the product info, which i thought was crap for a refurb and i did notice it say nvidia graphics but since it was only 256 mb i didnt expect it to be the 9600. It is also a good idea to provide a brief spec in the title. If it does have the nvidia 9600 512mb gddr then this is a hot deal, if not then i was right to vote it cold.
I also noticed another error in spec, the t6400 is 2ghz! not 2.13! ark.intel.com/Pro…479

i think this set up would be the best value for me of the recent deals, i currently am using a pc world refurb and its fine

If this is the same as mine and I believe it is, it actually has a 1GB 9600GT and not the 256MB version as stated.

Did you buy this from this pc world refurb? Can someone confirm it has this? Cheers.

I got mine from Argos, it is however a 6935 and I cannot see an acer branded 9600GT M with 256MB after having a look around.

Are you sure it's not a 6930? That has the 1GB graphics card.

I do apologise, so it is. So it looks as if the 6935 comes with 512MB instead. Still shouldn't make all that difference at 720p resolution.

Edit
-----
I've just had a quick look at youtube and there appears to be quite a few 6935 models with the 1GB memory too.

Oh I dunno!

If i am wrong, than I apologise. I've just ordered this laptop and hope it comes with the 512MB DDR3 version of the 9600 graphics. If not, well thats what distance selling regs are for If I'm extra lucky, might get bluray too.

Why do they have to have so many variations under the same model number ffs?

Best of luck dude!

If you buy it you can return it for any reason you like (including not liking the colour!) if you inform them within 7 days of receiving it under the distance selling regulations. As I said above, I'm hoping to get a 9600m GT 512MB DDR3 version. If I don't, I'll just send it back :-D

LOL, you just might mate. It arrived today. It was brown boxed with the PSU and looks like new. The Spec is exactly as advertised @ pcworld 2Ghz core 2 duo etc. The graphics card was a nvidia 9600M GS 512MB (DDR2). I still would have seriously considerd keeping it, but it keeps locking up at random intervals, so back it goes :x

So is this still good for gaming? Do you know the sorts of games it could handle?

it can play some latest games, maybe low to medium depending on the game's graphics, older games will run at hi settings.. The GS is slower than the GT and GDDR2 ram is slow, GDDR3 ram would of been much better.

Pcidiots advertises it as a 2.13 Ghz CPU!
" * Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6400
* (2.13Ghz, 800Mhz, 2MB Cache)" WRONG! Its 2GHz.

Thanks for your help Computerman..rep left. Think i might just go with this tbh, will leave it till monday. There is no better alternatives in this price range really

i rang them and they assured me it was a 9600 gt 256 so its a gs with 512 is that much of a trade off or should i send it back i wanna cplay games

how much does it cost send it back, or do i just go to nearest pcworld they
obviously embelishing the specs to get a sale.. bunch of crooks they got a range of refurbed dells with ati4650 chips in but the specs all messy

You can just take it to a PC world if you want. Or you can arrange for it to be collected.
