Just noticed the price has gone down for this Aspire 5.
The cheapest I have seen for this 2019 model with the 2nd Generation Ryzen processor.
This new model has also been updated with an IPS display.
Worth checking it out if you're near a store.

The Ryzen 3 version is also on offer for £329.

Good spec for £399. Don’t be tempted by the Ryzen 3 and a minor saving, it’s a huge step-down: half the CPU cores and about a third the GPU cores.

Is this ok for a student and YouTube kid xmas

Yes - ample and then some.
Well, my 2 cents, coming from a not too tech savvy, yet not absolutely clueless (I hope) perspective:
I got one of these on Friday (thanks OP), I was due to get a new laptop and was going to wait for Black Friday but then I just went for this one without overthinking it (which is a first for me). Now, if I wanted a laptop to be my main machine / to carry it around / do heavy gaming / and also look really cool and high end and all that - then I wouldn't even look at a £400 laptop (!) But my intention was to get a decent machine to use around the house in addition to my desktop PC, which doesn't break the bank and has a better screen resolution than my old laptop's 1366x768. IPS was a must.
I might have pretty low standards when it comes to laptops, only ever owned a 2008 dell inspiron and a 2012 lenovo thinkpad, but if I'm to offer an opinion: I find this Acer very nice for the money I paid. I love that it's upgrade-able, even though it's already fast enough for my moderate requirements of web browsing, office work, some coding, photo editing and streaming. Screen is great, love the wide viewing angles and brightness is fine for indoors. And so many pixels compared to the Thinkpad!
Battery lasts about 5 hours which is absolutely fine, as I'll never take it too far from a power outlet.
I like the aluminium casing around the screen, It looks nice and it makes it less flimsy than my previous laptops. I can't see any problems with the plastic casing on the bottom, it has no give and it seems like it could take some battering. To me it doesn't look cheap, but then again that's all subjective, I never knowingly had a premium looking piece of tech, because I always prioritize price/performance over looks. The weight is awesome for a 15.6 laptop AND it doesn't get hot, like my previous laptops even though I use it lazily on my blanket clad lap, while sitting on the sofa.
Don't like the feel of the keyboard, the keys are a bit annoying don't know why - and that's my one let down, but it's not a deal breaker. And I really don't get what's wrong with the trackpad? I usually hate trackpads, but this one is large enough to use it without getting aggravated, it works fine for what it is.
All in all, I'm happy with it. After I boost the RAM and storage, I'll have spent ~£500 for my brand new laptop, really can't fault that at all.

Isn't it a different laptop than one on the pictures attached? One in Currys doesn't have numerical keypad. Thanks.

Thanks, I think Currys have used the 14" Aspire 5 pictures. It does have Num pad on the 15.6" model but no USB Type-C port.

This one is black and it doesn`t say if it is in fact an IPS display anywhere on Curry`s site.
If there is one on display in the store, short of asking, is there any way of finding out on the laptop itself?

Looking at the spec on Acer’s website it appears it does: Spec

Doesn’t detract from a good deal. Under £400 for this spec is great, backlit keyboard is nice but it’s usually a premium feature so I don’t think people should expect it, even IPS panels are so it’s got that.

Exactly what I was about to say, every single laptop deal I look at folk moan about no backlit keyboards. Personally, I really don't see the need for it at all and having a good processor, good RAM, good graphics card, good quick SSD, lightweight laptop are all more important I think.

and as you say, if you want backlit keyboard, you either need to pay more for premium spec or get the odd one but lose other, more important spec, substantially.

Exactly. There’s a phrase for that as well

It ticks every other spec sheet box and is under £400 and brand new. Imagine the uproar if it had a TN panel but came with a backlit keyboard!
How upgraded-able is this ?

SSD definately 2.5inch and nothing other? Seems you could add another drive if it were nvme or m2 or "one of those little stick things"

Oh hang on. I had previously looked at this and was waiting for a decent price. I had seen two empty mem sockets and two available HDD connections. Now, in looking for SSD info, I've seen one with only one mem socket and one without the chance of having two HDDs. All under the unbrella of Acer Aspire 5 A515-43.
Also does it have a Ethernet port ?
If anyone could help on this please !
The specs give these ports so many terms I dont know for certain but need a wired port when in europe.
If it doesnt I dont know anything about ethernet port adaptors but that would be my only option .
Do the adaptors work just as well ?

I read that page - 128GB SSD - one on here 250GB, Also Windows 10 in S Mode, Didn't know what S mode was until looking it up. Is that just an American thing?
So many laptops in the same family with slight differences depending on country of sale - that's why the actual family number code is so important.

Worth picking up now, or wait for any possible Black Friday deals?

Anyone have any experience with current gen Intel i5 vs AMD Ryzen?

Also, how are Acer in terms of reliability? They used to be awful and had lots of issues with overheating.
