It's a Ryzen 3500U which would mean Vega 8 graphics?

I expected that but Site screen spec dump clearly shews 540X
scoring only 949 versus the Vega 8 score of 1739 (Passmark)

What a minefield... soldered memory, eMMC memory, faux 4k screens. Why does it feel like every laptop has a gotcha waiting somewhere.

Why would they not just use the onboard graphics, why put an extra card in that's worse?

Definitely a minefield. And it doesn't make sense.
It often seems to me, with these what I call "Unbalanced specs" that someone says "Oh we've got an excess stock of this component piece of crap that we need to get rid of."
"Where can we slip it in and most not notice?"
"Oh yeah, that batch."
OR of course, the guy at AO filling in the details on the website could have been coming off a long boring shift.
Who knows unless you open one up?

It has both and the display is IPS. Also supports dual RAM mode, much better than the Asus Ryzen posted a few days ago. Check out this thread. hotukdeals.com/dea…376

It does say 540X graphics, but it also says 'Integrated'. All other sites list this model as Vega 8, to be fair I hadn't noticed the 540X in the specs and its definitely something I would want clarified by AO before I gave them the cash!

Ryzen doesn’t have onboard graphicseMMC is storage not memory

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U is a mobile SoC that was announced in January 2019. It combines four Zen+ cores (8 threads) clocked at 2.2 - 3.8 GHz with a Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics card with 8 CUs (512 Shaders) clocked at up to 1200 MHz.
An SSD (solid-state drive) is a type of nonvolatile storage media that stores persistent data on solid-state flash memory.
Having a graphics card is not integrated into the CPU now is it?
And an SSD is storage not memory, just because it uses flash memory to store the data it doesn’t make it memory.
Radeon Vega 8 comes with and is part of the Ryzen 5 CPU - is that not what integrated graphics are?
Why is a usb memory stick called a memory stick. It is non volatile memory, the same as a ssd or hdd. RAM is volatile memory, different but still memory.
We are actually both right and wrong
some Ryzen 5 CPUs come with integrated graphics and others don’t so require a graphics card. This CPU does not require a card so I stand corrected

as for the ‘memory stick’ I believe that is just down to branding, technically inaccurate branding.
RAM is memory on that we can agree

I agree Darkle, putting in a dedicated GPU that's inferior to the integrated one is ridiculous. I presume it could be disabled to enable the use of the on board graphics but that makes it a complete waste of time putting it in to start with. It would make more sense to put it in something with poor integrated graphics to help boost the cpu performance a bit.
Can we just get back to basics for us non techies like me. Is this a good deal/decent unit or not looking at a laptop for a student with basic needs ?

It's a decent laptop at a fairly good price. I'm tight so I'm waiting for Black Friday to see if it (or something else similar) drops a bit further. If you're not wanting it to play games on though I do like the look of the Lenovo 530S at Box.co.uk

The HP at John Lewis looks fairly decent too if you want something smaller and lighter to carry around.

Just don't buy them all before Black Friday
This ticks a lot of boxes. Just kinda want more powerful CPU. Any throttling or is the fan able to let the Ryzen go full speed?
Back to this price c/o £50 off £499 OOPS Same CODE my bad.
