is this any good seems great for the price ,looking to buy laptop for my niece who is going to uni later in the year , also does this need more ram?
thanks

I got this just after Christmas for £100 more, XP version though. Fantastic little laptop, Added an extra 512mn of memory the day I got it so I can't comment on how it runs with only 512. I'd highly recommend it though, especially at that price.

Apart from the need to upgrade 1GB Ram and it's only got Vista Basic it's a good deal.

1gb is almost the minimum to work smoothly under Vista. With 512mb and share graphics, the experience is far from reasonable. However, laptop ram is quite cheap. You can get 1gb for just over £30.
BTW, just remembered that I've heard lots of people complaining about the quality of Acer laptops.

Very tempted by this, Oh dear there goes my free money for the next few motnhs

I have recently bought an Acer laptop and I am really pleased with it

The only problem is Vista which can be sorted. If you can get this Acer laptop for the price stated get it! Then add the additional RAM nickie suggested and install XP (Home or Pro) and you are laughing.

Although the price of buying XP's going to put a dent in that unless you happen to have a retail licence.

Good deal. Bought an Acer about 6 weeks ago for myself so this is a good enough deal for her indoors to have one! Many thanks, voted hot!

£ 73.38 for memory and XP if you use google checkout on ebuyer (not including p+p)

£363.37 for a laptop like this = Bargain
Not 100% sure if it is the right memory but pretty sure. I dont want anyone buying it just on my say so.

Acers have awful build quality, you might want to consider that.

My son has just bought the Vaio that was on offer from Tesco Direct..
It's got 1 GB of RAM, but where is the best place to get another Gig and what sort does he need?

Is is easy to install?

Thanks

Not sure about build quality of Acers. Dells I do know, having had four over the years. Good build quality, really competitive price, & on the two occasions when things have gone wrong for me - software issues, my fault for fiddling with bios - they have sorted things out fast and efficiently. What's the support if things go wrong and you've bought an acer from eBuyer? I don't know the answer, but I'd want to before buying...

Mike T often reports good Dell deals on this forum on Thursdays (he seems to be best at sniffing them out!).

I'm happy with my Acer 5685... though I'm not sure if build quality differs depending on the model (like how Inspirons are supposed to be lower quality than Latitudes).

Though in fairness, the company that make Acer laptops also make Apples and Dells too... (IIRC)

Think it would handle FM2007 ok as thats more about number crunching than graphics?

How easy is it to install more ram?
I have done it to my desktop pc but not got a clue about laptops.
I reckon any pc or laptop should have a minimum 1gb anyway.

There will be a socket behind a screwable panel on the underside that would take a single stick upto 2gb bringing it up to 2.5gb.

After that depending on the laptop usually to replace the origional 512mb stick would require removal of the keyboard etc.

very easy. unscrew the RAM cover [or keyboard on some models as simonts pointed out] and insert the chip/s. Pretty much the same as a desktop, except that the chips are inserted flat rather than sticking up and they have little clips either side holding them in place that you need to unclasp and then reclasp onto the new chip (if you see what I mean). Easy to find an online manual if you need more help. Google it.

I've had an Acer Travelmate 2410 for about a year.

Found the build quality to be a bit shoddy (I often pick it up to find screws have fallen out), the battery life is pretty short, dies in about half an hour so needs to be plugged in the whole time you're using it.

Had to send it back about 3 months after I got it due to a hardware fault, I didn't see it for 5 weeks after that, their repair line staff weren't too helpful either, first told me it was awaiting parts, then the parts had arrived, then that they were the wrong parts and it was now awaiting more parts, then called me 5 minutes later to say it had been dispatched, so daren't send it back to get the screws sorted.

Memory upgrade is simple enough, unscrew the panel on the back and you're away. Have upgraded to vista, seems to run it without any problem, I do recommend a ram upgrade though, I reckon it would struggle otherwise!

Overall though, the only real issue I have with it is the battery life. Otherwise it seems to be a good little machine.

I know it's a different model, so maybe irrelevant.

Ordered one! Its just too much of a bargain at this price! Thanks for the review linky some nice pictures of it on ther! I was tempted by the IBM model at the same price but i am drawn more to this. I've heard good things about the MK36 cpus and this seems to have reasonable battery compared to the cheap hewlett packards ive seen with a lowly 1 hour battery life! Voted Hot!

Does anyone know if this will run with 1.5gb memory? i.e. purchase a 1gb stick to be inserted into the second slot along side the 512mb ram already there?

No reason why it shouldnt as long as you buy the correct type for the laptop

Nice one cheers bud! Thinking 1.5gb shud be a fairly healthy amount for vista even when u take off for shared video memory!

The nearest deal I’ve seen on eBuyer is a HP 510 Centrino for £330 including delivery and the Google Discount.
The spec is 2.13GHz, 15.4” TFT, 60GB, 512MB, 2.7Kg, WiFi b/g, XP Home, battery = 2.8 hours max, DVD+-RW & DVD-RAM.

It can only take a max of 1GB of RAM and has just 2 USB ports which is poor. For some people this may be preferable as it has XP and is a HP!

Don't go near Acer, they are awful... go for a Dell!

naaa I disagree! Don't go for dell! I work at a University and we do some fairly hefty orders with dell! All of our desktops are dell and most of our laptops are! Out of 20 Desktops 19 of them dont have a working DVD drive (Won't play or burn anything!) 4 have failed completely, 3 have had corrupted hard drives (Seagate too!). On the Laptop front we have had one self destruct in the middle of a Business Intelligence Demonstration and another couple with completely knackered screens! And also if you look in the news recently Dell are in big big trouble getting blamed for using shoddy hardware! Im not saying Acer are the best on earth but dell are seriously going down hill at the moment!

the desktops with the dodgy drives wouldnt be optiplex 745's by any chance would they?

Do u know i think they might be! :whistling:

Lol!

I only buy acer after exeriences with other laptops! The screen quality (Ie. crystalbrite) is excellent, best display around nice and clear!

Bought my girlfriend a 3630 (only know cos i am using it) and its fab, i tend to borrow it off her instead of my own!

As for FM2007 it runs it fab (well the one i have is the same spec cept its a celeron) and its a beauty, runs network games great as well as its got wireless g included.

Its a fantastic deal - heat and rep added - would never buy any other laptop as they have let me down.

** oh i did have a problem with the processor fan in the acer making a grinding noise about a month ago and phoned up and it was collected and returned fixed witin a week **

nickie , thank sfor the feedback i think i will go for this anyone sorted out ram yet ?price etc
thanks

na not yet im gonna wait till it arrives then think about memory! Wanting 1.5gb in total if possible (Well thats my plan).

You might wanna get the memory now as GC finishes on 09/06!

Just found the ram needed - £20.50 after GC. Not bad at all.

have heard somewhere that if you bought a computer/laptop with vista installed you can uninstall vista and load xp and use the same key. can someone back this up? i think it may apply to vista professional and not basic

My laptop arrived today. Extra 1GB Memory is on order from Orcalogic as with the standard 512MB in the Vista is VERY slow to boot up. Everything else seems good though. Very pleased!
