They also have another one here for £370, lower specs as expected though.
direct.tesco.com/q/R…spx

549 clubcard points too.
Nice find.

Worth noting that dedicated graphics do use up more battery power than integrated, and at 2.82kg this isn't the most portable of laptops.
Great desktop replacement, though worth looking at other available laptops, core 2 duo is pretty unsurpassed after all.

Would you say this is better than the Acer laptop dixons are selling for £549

I'm really interested in getting one of these laptops as they seem exceptional value for money. I thought I'd narrowed it down to the Acer at Dixons but now i'm thinking that this one could be a possibility. I'd love it if one of you techies could help me out with a final decision. I'm sure I found a £20 off dixons code somewhere, but I suppose the clubcard points would also be good.

The dixons is very similar.. main dif is shared v dedicated graphics, and core 2 duo v AMD turion 64 x2. Core 2 duo should run faster, and is slightly more energy efficient.

Original Poster

Yep, both vary similar, but i would pick the Tesco deal, it will definantly run Vista with FULL eye candy.

Yes Ricky that looks a really good spec...with a Core 2 CPU...basic graphics but must be vista capable as this is a new Acer model.

If you buy don't forget quidco.

Original Poster

Plus the tesco one has a webcam (may be useful in the future).

2.5% quidco from Dixons iirc

Work will be giving me the cash next week so I need to try to decide. The dixons one is out of stock at them moment so I'll have to see fi they are likely to get more stock.

Ah, here it is: comet.co.uk/com…286

Similar spec but integrated graphics, plus ML-50 instead of an ML-52.

The difference between this and the comet one is:
the comet has shared graphics, no webcam and slower processor.

What's your budget and will you want to play games on the laptop??

Hi Budget upto a £900 and maybe a game or two. Its mainly for business so must be mobile Been on Del but they are confusing. Would pay for the TV bit as well (technical term) :?

What kind of games?
Dell is pretty good as it allows you to chose exactly what you want, plus the prices are competitive.
A core 2 duo for future proofing, 1gig of RAM, 120gb hdd, analogue / digital tv tuner the level of spec you want?
£900 is a fairly huge budget.. what kind of business applications will you need to run?
A decent battery life is important, which some of the deals wont have... how long on the go without a plug do you anticipate being?
Do you want a standard 15.4 inch screen, widescreen, larger screen (will kill battery life) or the ultraportable 12.1?

Hi The screen I have now is a 15 and that seems great as the eyes are failing. Battery would have to last at the most about 5 hours but could always buy a spare. Away in motorhome at weekends and need to be able to email and use internet. Small busines need to keep in touch with 6 others by internet I need to run SAGE and Excel but most of the work is stored on here and backed up. Hope this makes sense

If you can stretch your budget more a MacBook Pro maby a good option, great screen, battery life, powerful, slim and portable.

If you cant stretch for a new one a refurb might do well in your budget range.

Does anyone know of any Tesco Direct code that are valid? None on here seem to work.

Many thanks

Nothing demanding then...
5 hours is a fairly long time for any laptop.. going to need a 9 cell lithium ion battery of at least 4800 mah.
No way you'll get 5 hours + on one battery on a 17 or 19 inch monitor so a spare will be needed... that'll probably take 150 off your budget.

Had a look at dell and just as a basic guide to the spec level you'll want this is available within your budget (and youll easily beat this as I'v only checked one site, if this looks ok i'll dig out half a dozen alternatives.

It's pretty similar battery same 9 cell slightly less power but not by much. Bluetooth and camera extra, as well a dual layer writer. Faster DDR2 so better performance. Free bag too. Can customise what you want with MESH too.
The £4.68 cigarette lighter adaptor can come in handy for a tiny extra outlay. Charging on the go/ using in car in emergency is v useful sometimes.
Not much in the way of software so worth picking up ms works etc for it off somewhere like ebuyer, only a couple of quid for an oem version.

Hi Ricky, Comet do the same laptop but £20 dearer ]http//ww…964, with free delivery between 5-7 days. You can also choose your delivery date. I ordered one of these for delivery on Monday, not knowing that its £20 cheaper in Dixons.

I checked their price match and you have up to 10 days after your purchase to make a claim. They'll refund you the difference plus 10%, so I'm hoping the one in Dixons comes back into stock!!

The only problem is that they only price match on certain stores, including Currys and PC World, but not Dixons. I always believed Dixons was part of the same group, so I don't see why they won't price match it?

They won't price match because Dixons is an online only retailer, and thus has lesser costs than Comet who have both bricks and mortar stores and an online business. Would seem to suggest online buyers subsidise store goers but hey that's their policy.

i have an acer laptop as a second computer was about £600 i think from comet

the laptop it self is good

not excellent

BATTERY LIFE IS SHOCKINGLY BAD! ...... i get about 1hr tops on a full charge for surfing the internet or word processing... so you may want to consider an extra battery or just anther laptop!

I have a dell desktop atm

waiting for it to 'go' before i splash out again

get this:

128mb ram
40gb hard drive
17inc CRT
DVD re-writer!
floppy drive - ooo how we use to love the whole 3.2mb of memory!! :-D

cost me about £1200 back in 2000

it was top notch then!!!

only the cd drive has broke !! but after 5 years what do you expect
haha

:whistling:

I know the battery life is reported to last 2 and half hours, but I didn't think it'd be that bad.

Acers are generally poor on battery life, plenty of test results using mobilemark and other such test simulation programs.

Worth noting very few people bother conditioning their batteries though. I get around the 9 hour mark on my dell as long as I'm not gaming/ playing dvds.

I bought the 6301 model below it and it's fantastic and plays everything I throw at it. Indeed I'm HUKD'ing away on it right now

And the 12 cell is only £58.74  Seriously though, very impressed with the Zoostorm. Pretty sure the chassis is Fujitsu/Siemens. The HD in mine is Samsung.

Thanks just been in and had a look. Think I am more confused than before. Did like the one that Sean sent in with Ggood spec and TV and bag etc.. Think I am still leaning that way but still happy to look.

By the way I have an Acer now been good in all ways but the battery So must be something with them.
