This seems like a good price for a Core 2 Duo laptop.

Aspire 5633 WLMi
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66Ghz 667 FSB 2MB L2 Cache
RAM: 2048MB DDR2
Hard Drive: 120GB
Screen: 15.4" TFT CrystalBrite (1200x800)
Optical Drive: DVD±RW Super Multi
Graphics: Integrated Graphics 128MB
Wireless LAN: 802.11b/g
Weight: 2.8Kg
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
5-in-1 Card Reader

The price is £319 + £3.95 delivery but the 10% off voucher brings it down to £291.05.
Also Quidco is worth a possible £8.73

The picture doesn't match the description though, and it's not clear what graphics it has - this model can have either GMA950 or Geforce Go 7300. The closest model I can find is this one in comet ;

I dislike laptops.

But the price is falling so much that they are handy to take on holiday as entertainment centres - offering DVDs being played - stored music - and net access via wifi (visit fon.com) - for free holiday access.

You could even use them for work - but there are far netter four letter words for holidays!!!

This is now lower in price than the new EEE - and has the advantage of being able to buy and play DVDs while there (whereas the EEE would need them stored first).

HOT

agree with ibiza - i hardly ever use my laptop, but always take it with me on holiday. i always have to carry a small bag anyway for tickets, passports, drivers licence, insurance blah blah etc, so just shove them in the laptop bag.

once on holiday, ideal for playing a bit music or watching a dvd if the weather is poor, but most important for me, i back up my photos every other day or so.

at this price, this lappy is a steal...................

hot hot hot

yeh this is awsome price.

Good deal for a laptop but the build quality is pathetic!

I have and acer 5102WLMi and the connection between the screen is loose and moving the screen forces it to go off and you have to keep playing with it to get it right!

But the clearbright screen is really nice to look at!

I have a 5630 Which has a gforce 7300, with similar other specs to this, and cost ~£500 4 months ago. I assume this one has the ****** built in graphics card. Performance is pretty good. I run Linux as the sole OS on the system.

I find web cams to be among the most completely ****ing pointless things on commodity hardware today and think this laptop would have been better without it. It causes a weakness in the structure of the lid of the laptop causing the screen to bow and bend. Who actually ever uses a web cam? They are a complete waste of time. The whole unit creaks as a result. Build quality is quite poor and not at all sturdy.

A screw fell out from the bottom of the unit and it has taken to overheating consistently, on the odd occasion powering itself down. Though that is usually with some very heavy CPU contention going on.

I'd say at the above price it's not a bad buy but beware it isn't as durable as a Fujitsu Siemens or Sony Vaio.

i had an acer but the fan noise was rediculus, it was on as soon as you turned the machine on. It was a core 2 duo so didnt run hot. In the end i sold it on and bought a similar spec sony, which is quiet as a mouse. I guess you get what you pay for

Fujitsu? Durable? Don't agree with that! But you do get what you pay for! For the price it is not bad!

Great price for portable storage / backup / DVD player, I always take mine out and about whilst away HOT

great price. i have a 5633 with a cracked screen which has been quoted at £225 to replace. might buy one of these instead and hook the other upto a tft monitor!

For the spec its a cracking price, even for an Acer, if it were me i'd spend another £100 and get an Asus or Samsung notebook though, but still, great bargain.

Bargain - compare (if you want to ) to a portable DVD player, sweet deal HOT

Great specs for the price... For the same money the best you'll get from PCW would be a single core with 1gb ram. So, this is great specs for the money!

the only 3 people I know who've bought Acer laptops have all had problems with them, all to do with the motherboard and all within 2 years but after the 12 month warranty expired
my family have collectively bought 5 Dell laptops over the last 10 years, with a new one coming this month
the only problem we've had is with my original and oldest, the HDD finally gave up a few months ago and the hinges for the screen cracked, but that was after 9 years of daily use and with a new HDD will still be usable
it's a good price for the spec but I'll be happy with the Vostro 1700 I'm getting for £297 (after Quidco) that was posted here last week

Good deal

I second this, Dell have been fantastic for me. I was with Acer for a year and the one time I did use their returns service - it was awful. The customer service rep who was dealing with me was outright rude. Since then, i've bought a Dell and 14 months touchwood.

I've have a 5633 over 8 months and the build quality is just fine. The design seems very simiar to my old 1681 that survived my daughter dropiing it downstairs with no more than a broken screen catch. Perhaps fortunately I've never had to deal with thier customer services.

Dell seem pretty good about it, replaced my battery quite quickly.

Too damn bad we can't put together latops like we can desktops. I always build my desktops from Scan and wish I could do the same with these.

has anyone purchased anyhting from this bargain Crazy before? I am guessing it is all new stock not refurbished and perhaps it looks like littlewoods cat clearance. i am very tempted as I missed the boat on a really good dell option earlier this month.

Does anyone know hat the graphics card is like? thanks Dawn

I've had my Acer Aspire 1520 for about 3 years now and apart from the cat knocking some of the keys (subsequently replaced, but they're a bit "sticky" although tyey still work). It gets thrashed about and was used as a portable desktop repalcement (moving constalntly between offices) and has now been semi retired for buisness purposes. I know its a different model and all, I just wanted to even up the Acer reviews. I'd buy another one and this has a pretty good spec for the money.

Voted hot.

You did put the keys back on correctly, didn't you??!:-D

I have sweared by my life never to buy a Samsung Laptop again, I had a P28 and it had a fault after 2 years where one of the ICs died and when i searched the internet forums for the same problem several ppl had the same prob. Samsung would not replace it and asked for £200 for the new motherboard even when there was a clear inherent fault. Had to break it up and sell it as spares.

Been using the exact same spec'd Acer 5633 WLMi for yonks now, the build quality is fine. It gets used daily and has been trouble free from day 1, one of my better buys

It's showing as out of stock now, but I decided to order one earlier despite the reliabilty concerns. I've found that Acer warranty packs are reasonably priced, with extended cover for 3 years starting from about £40. These can be purchased any time in the first year, and also include a laptop case and mouse.
It seems that laptops generally are prone to problems - my previous IBM Thinkpad needed a new motherboard and several AC adapters, and my current Dell Latitude needs the hinge screws tightening regularly and the touchpad buttons are a bit intermittent.

no bluetooth either which seems strange for such a high spec laptop.

I bought this laptop from Tesco when it was on here just over a year ago at £499 with a 3 year guarantee.
Mine has the geforce 7300 graphics card.
It worked fine for the first year but has now developed a fault with the screen or graphics card making the screen constantly jump at times, this may or may not be an isolated case.I have moved to Italy and Acer now tell me that the international guarantee is only 1 year and if I want it repaired I must return it to the UK.
The build quality is nowhere near as good as my last laptop, which was a Dell.
As you can tell I won't be buying another Acer product but it is cheap at this price.
Voted hot because of the price but Dell is far superior

you may consider adding the dwarfish play.com Bluemicro bluetooth thing with A2DP and all for 8 quid (and quidco) ]here
if you need bluetooth in your laptop

I Have an ACER Aspire 7110 laptop and i would without any doubt recommend an ACER Laptop.

i ordered this yesterday when it was still in stock but i have not recieved any email confirmation yet. It has took money from my account !!!!!!!! Is this the same with evryone else who bought it?

The laptop was delivered this afternoon and was a better spec. than expected. It's a model number LX.AY30X.049 and comes with Geforce 7300 graphics, 160gb hard drive and a web cam. It's the same as this model ]here

mine is going to take a little longer to arrive because of a payment problem but that has been resolved now.
Hopefully (fingers crossed) i get that model aswell!!!!!!!! That one cost £439 on the site. That will be a great bargain!
