Well thanks for that...........constructive

so its basically a 399 laptop with a cheap printer and oem copy of NIS2010

office starter isnt really worth anything and the 3 year warranty is from acer, not provided by argos.

dunno what acers warranties are like but its canny if you need all those 'free' things

Hi I am trying to print a good spec laptop for my Mum and Dad who have capital bond vouchers to spend. Meaning they can only buy from Argos or Currys! Booo!

Is there any other good deals about? not bothered re the printer etc just want a good laptop pref 17in

Budget £400 ish

How does this spec compare with direct.tesco.com/q/R…spx at tesco for £449 + rewards. Dell Inspiron 1545 T4500 4GB 320GB Win7 15.6"

We've tended to go for Dell, but read good things about Acer.
Thanks.

Although it has 1Gb less RAM the Acer with i3-350 and graphics should way outperform the Dell T4500. Otherwise they appear similar.

From personal bias I would ask Argos not to ship the HP printer (save me the effort of throwing it in the bin - I couldn't with good concience sell it on e-Bay).

I don't know the details on the Acer 3-year warranty but that should allay fears over the brand name.

The Acer includes Office Starter (word and excel).

All that makes the Acer the better deal in my view.

As you point out it's a 399ish laptop - I think a 3-Year Acer warranty is usually around £50. So it's a decent deal.

If any of the 'freebies' are usefull to folks they're ahead on the game.

Nearly every new Windows laptops will be coming with Office Starter (it only costs companies like Acer, HP etc.. $2-$5 to pre-load it). You are NOT getting the full versions of Word and Excel with the laptop. Office Starter is a free edition of Office that is advert supported with some features limited/removed - it's the replacement for the old Microsoft Works that most laptops used to come with. It's not really something that makes this deal (or any other deal) stand out imho. See pcpro.co.uk/rev…010

Hi there
Have reserved one of these but also just managed to get to payment stage for the advent i5 machine. Which is better? Thanks!

I'm hunting for the best laptop for around £400. It's for the parents so it doesnt need to game etc. Quidco would be nice as then it can go through my account :P

You're right - I didn't realise that it's advert supported / cut-down. I use OpenOffice myself so am a little out-of-touch with Microsoft Office... I uninstalled the Microsoft office on my new laptop without even looking at it...

Just be careful of Acer's 3 year warranty. I had a different model die a few months back and instead of a repair or replacement as the warranty states they sent a cheque for under half of what I paid. By what one 'Repair Assistant' told me, this seems to be their new policy as in his own words, they have hundreds of cheques a day to sort through. It's going to the small claim's court now.

Ow! Good luck with that and thanks for sharing

How old was your laptop when it failed?

This seems to be a reasonable spec laptop for the general home user. Not fantastic value for money but then again, not bad. The three year waranty has got to be of some value but, assuming that the spec meets your needs, l would spend a wee bit extra and buy a more reliable laptop.
The most reliable brands are (best first) Asus, Toshiba and Sony. Source: Laptop reliability link

i'll sit on the fence and not voted either way on this deal.

Decent price, good spec + the extras. Never had any problems with Acer warranty and they are always quick to repair and return if there is a problem. Looks good to me.

Steve

Good laptop acer but i prefer assus or compaq

I agree with your comments and that's an interesting survey; thanks for posting the link.

...laptops are generally unreliable, but probably still not so unreliable … ...laptops are generally unreliable, but probably still not so unreliable that you need to purchase a third party warranty, particularly if you purchase a laptop from a reliable manufacturer. The 15% chance that an ASUS laptop will fail within three years is not substantial. In fact, I wouldn’t really worry unless I bought a laptop from a manufacturer with a three year chance of failure over 20%

As Acer scored a 23.3% chance of failure over three years the 3-year warranty with this deal is perhaps needfull ;-)

A word of warning about Acer, I got a laptop that failed within a month and sent it to them for repair and it took nearly 3 weeks for them to return it and it wss STILL NOT FIXED, I had enough an sent it for repair again where I was told I could get a brand new laptop off them because of the problems with the laptop I sent back. Only problem was they didnt bother to send me a new laptop so I had to keep ringing them up to get a refund and was told a diff **** story everytime. I think it literally took around 50 phone calls (no joke) and 6 months for them to refund me.

Does anyone know how long the battery lasts on this particular machine?

Given the further comments from folks regarding reliability and customer service I'd suggest following the links posted and checking the surveys out in detail; they do appear to show Acer as considerably less reliable than Asus and Toshiba, (who both top the report), and also Sony, Apple and Dell.
For some reason Samsung don't appear on the list (I think they're new in the laptop arena) but do come out OK in the surveys they are on.

I have had two Acer laptops and have perhaps been fortunate. The newer which is three years old - still runs fine but is now rapidly falling apart (screen hinges, some keys and mouse buttons) - the older one recently died after 5 years fault free life. I would have bought Acer again but ended up with an XPS from Dell outlet as a replacement.

and whats wrong with the free printer, expensive inks?

447.70 for the machine on it's own at Amazon -

Battery life is better than most comparable i3 laptops (4-5 hours)

Just the warranty thats the probem, I bought an Acer a few years back and have no end of problems with the warranty side.

Yes that and, as I said, my personal bias - I've had a couple of 'dud' HP printers; I stupidly fed expensive ink cartridges to the last even though it rarely using more than 20% of the ink. I'm much happier with my current cheapie Canon...

how does this compare to hotukdeals.com/dea…354 please?

Has this expired, I can't find an i3 equiped Acer 5741 on Argos with that offer or price?

I would like to know if the laptop Acer Aspire 5741A from Argos is the same as the laptop Acer Aspire 5741?
What does the A stand for? Argos?

Thanks,

The 5741A is not the same as 5741. The 5741A has a different CPU & Graphics card.

I would get the Acer 5741A, as it has a much better CPU and includes the manufacturer's 3 year guarantee.

hope that helps...
