Simply Acer are now selling the Acer 8935G fitted with a Intel Q9000 quad-core processor for just under £700. Not that long ago, this would have set you back £1400!
This gets you an 18.4" 1920x 1080 Full HD screen, a Bluray drive, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD and a still very respectable ATI 4670 dedicated graphics card.

I would buy this myself but whilst the Q9000 is massively powerful for some things, it's not that great for games which are not optimised for multi-core processors. Shame. However if you are running CAD applications, this could well be the machine for you.

I wish LED stuff would become more common in monitors and HDTVs, it seems common place on mid to high end laptops now.

Seems pretty awesome

However battery life must be crap

is this processor better than an i7 ?

Any laptop over 15inches tends to have poor battery vs. the Atoms and ULVs.

This is desktop replacement which you occasionally carry, with access to power so not really an issue imo.

All the i laptop CPUs use DDR3 no? which means three memory channels which usually means 3gb or 6gb in their laptops, all the older 2gb/3gb/4gb laptops seem NOT to be the new i range.

This spec in the i range would be over £900 imo.

Bit-tech did an i7 vs Q9000 comparsion (see link below)...

bit-tech.net/har…d/2

The i7 is a clear winner but for some things that involve a lot of multi-tasking on software able to use the four cores, the Q9000 acquits itself well.

As with most things on HotUKDeals, it all comes down to price. Simply Acer will sell you an Acer 8942G (the update of the 8935G) with an i7-720QM but it will cost you £1379.99. The Q9000 lappy is half the price but probably does 90% of what the newer machine does.

This is not a laptop for carting around. This is more for someone that sits at home and does 'clever stuff' like CAD or video rendering.

Mobile i7 is dual channel memory; triple channel is for desktops/servers.

Added. Only LGA1366 uses triple channel memory for desktop systems as LGA1156 is dual channel.

DDR3 does not necessarily mean triple-channel memory. Some i7 processors can use triple-channel, some just dual.

nice sounding laptop but £49 extra for a windows 7 upgrade. to me vista is dead and win7 should come as standard. i think companys should just add win7 into the price and never mention vista, as soon as you mention vista it puts me off lol

I have Vista. I never quite understood why some people loathe it like they do. I find it ok. This Acer is last years model which is why it's Vista based.

Fully agree.
Just upgraded my acer 8930g with windows 7(64 bit) - better performance all round.

18.4" - not really portable is it

My toilet isn't portable. Doesn't mean that it isn't useful on a daily basis.

Then get a desktop equivilant? Don't be snotty with me. The whole point of a laptop is its portability otherwise it is better to get the desktop which is always more powerful and cheaper.

This is more portable than a desktop. It also folds away, unlike a desktop.

I agree - a laptop doesn't just mean portability but it can mean space saving too - which this is compared to a desktop.

I'm very tempted in getting this as it's a good deal. Hot

Even a laptop with a large screen is still easily portable which isn’t the case with a desktop. Laptops have other differences over desktops as well so you are definitely wrong in saying that portability is the whole point.

Good Graphics for the CPU/GPU price (these are not embedded btw)

wow! that's one seriously big screen!!

I have the dual core version of this. More portable than you might think, though a bit of a beast to lug around, but I have a big bag! And battery life of around 4 hrs is pretty good imo. ( It switches between using dedicated graphics and ordinary on board graphics to save wasting energy while just doing less graphically intensive tasks like browsing etc). Highly recommended laptop though, probably the first laptop I've had where I have no gripes whatsoever, there is nothing it seems unable to do...

I was just wondering if anyone who has this thought the mouse pad is in a strange position (slightly to the left of centre) does it feel ok using it?

Bought one of these for a customer at work, spent some time setting it up yesterday.. Now you mention it the track pad did feel a little funny to use, not sure if it was because it was off centre, probably because we left the plastic on it.
