I hate Acer laptops. Ive worked as a computer technician for 15 years and they keep me in work repairing them.
I also hate Celeron processors.
BUT..... i would much sooner have a Celeron than an AMD as they take the biscuit for being rubbish and slow.
I thinkif i had a choice rather than the Acer i would go for a second hand Toshiba or Lenovo or if available a display model.
And nowadays 4GB ram is useless especially with Windows 10 being so memory hungry.

I thought the AMD laptop posted earlier was poor, but this CPU's benchmark score is even worse ~2,500 vs ~1,100. Laptop market is weird lately. Used to be able to buy budget laptops that were half decent. Phones are more powerful these days.

A computer technician. Whoopee. Clearly you haven't heard of horses for courses. A laptop running a Celeron with 4GB of RAM will handle Windows 10 perfectly adequately unless you want to use it for intensive applications that demand a more powerful processor and/or more RAM.
I ran a similarly spec'd laptop quite happily until it decided to die on me. Handled all the basic stuff perfectly. Snail's pace loading compared to my desktops but ok for what I used it for.
With all your expertise, I thought you'd have realised that.

Declining laptop market v booming, though not as loudly as it used to, phone market. Budget laptops are as rare as hen's teeth.

What part of windows 10 is basic !
Every week Microsoft decide to add another massive update.
Last year on the 23rd of December a friend of mine purchased a laptop with pretty much identical spec as the Acer above.
She wanted it setting up and ready for Christmas day.
I turned it on and connected it to my internet at 2pm.
It finally finished downloading and installing updates at 9.15pm !
Either windows 10 is a joke or the spec of the laptop couldn't handle the load.
Either way windows 10 needs a decent processor and 8GB or ram even when doing standard things like updating.
You might think you know, but i know i know when it comes to computers and what is decent and what is useless

I have an old Acer still running fine. I would prefer a laptop running Windows 7, the second hand market seems to be a wash with over priced laptops with dead or near dead cooked batteries.

"Every week Microsoft decide to add another massive update." Every week? Since when? Some computer technician you are if that's your level of awareness. And haven't you noticed the regular monthly updates are simplified compared to previous Windows?

What make of laptop? How much crapware installed?
I had no problems whatsoever with my laptop. It came with Windows 8.1, which I upgraded to Windows 10 and every new version subsequently. No problems whatsoever. Slower than my desktops, but nothing like you're moaning about.

I don't think I know. I know I know as I ran the thing without problems with 4GB and a Celeron.

"i would go for a second hand Toshiba or Lenovo" Why? How can you tell how a second hand machine's been used/abused? It might have been "repaired" by a "computer technician". What warranty would you get?

Argument lost as soon as you resort to insults rather than addressing the issues.

So you have a friend and allowed them to buy a laptop that took 7 hours to update. She asked you to set it up so surely must have seeked advice from you on what to buy? Or did you have dial up internet?.
Some people can't afford more then then this for a laptop so the specs you suggest would cost more. It's fine for wins 10 as long as people ain't expecting to play games in 4k at 60fps. Basic web browsing, word documents bit of facebook or YouTube is fine.

I told my Friend to loom for an older machine with windows 7 on if possible as windows 10 is useless.
I have fibre broadband running at 76 mbps so no really dial up speed !
The laptop was manufactured sometime in 2017 and obviously before Microsoft released their "fall creators update" which is a massive update.
Also in the time of manufacture and being turned on they released 70+ updates.
All together the fall creators update and security updates added upto 4GB+
Microsoft delivers these updates and restarts the laptop in %'s so if an update is say 900mb, then your machine will download 300mb, install it, restart the computer, and then start again from where it left off.
If i remember it restarted about 8 times during the 7 hours.
I assume you have not recently powered up a brad new laptop out of the box.
Believe me, even a i7 takes a few hours as there are simply some things you cannot rush and initial setup is one of them.

I must have done something wrong then !
Got it out the box.
Connected the charger.
Pressedthe power button on the laptop.
It came on after a while.
I entered the wifi password and pressed next a few times.
Then followed the windows on screen instructions.
Left it sitting there whilst watching tv and wrapping Christmas presents.
7 hours later it finally let me use it.
Do you think it was the watching tv or wrapping the presents that i did wrong ?

Nothing like a BS sweeping generalisation.

So ALL AMD processors are slow & rubbish are they?

Windows 10 memory hungry? Are you having a laugh? 10 is brilliant on memory it runs perfectly on my Linx tablet with 2GB RAM. 4GB of RAM is fine for a celeron anyone buying this isn't going to be editing 4k video for goodness sake.

I agree in a way if dropping £260 save a hit more & get a lot better i3/i5 or go refurbished & get a Thinkpad etc BUT it's nowhere near as bad as you make out.

Sorry but you're taking the pee somewhat

You obviously know more than nothing about computers.
You are comparing a tablet to a laptop !
Tablets run a completely different version of Windows 10 to a laptop.
I have a tablet too that unfortunately has windows 10 on it and it far out performs any basic spec laptop.

If you were a genuine IT professional you wouldn't power up and setup a laptop as it comes out of the box. No one I know in the biz does that we ALL flatten it & do a clean build with no junk installed it takes less time than setting the laptop up with all the crap on it.

With a fast USB drive with a 10 build preblown onto it I can have a brand new laptop wiped & reloaded and pretty much ready to use in about the same time of an hour and afterwards I take an image and that's saved in a separate partition.

I honestly wouldn't even turn a new laptop on with a 10 install on USB plugged in.

Lmao mate I've been a technician for years then Network Manager for years too and also Data Manager but sure go ahead keep insulting me it's your keyboard you're wearing out.

If you're supposed to be a professional and you're just turning laptops on that's really shoddy, absolutely pathetic no professional integrity the speed difference on a fresh install vs a blown image from Acer, Asus etc is huge and probably explains your whining about only having 4GB RAM being the end of the world.

Even the kids I've trained know to do a fresh install on new machines when you unbox them and they knew that before they started.

Dear oh dear you go on about school but you're being so snobbish about IT equipment and insisting everyone needs a powerhouse with 8GB RAM.

So if 10 needs so much RAM how come my lowly Atom powered tablet with 2GB runs perfectly then? You still haven't answered that yet.

I just hope no one on here has taken your bad advice not that it was all bad but by being rude & aggressive to others on here no one should be paying any attention to you.

In fact I no longer will. Is that the bell? You'd best get to class before you get a detention

I do as the customer asks.
Im sure if i returned one of your laptops to pc world after you had wiped the hard drive and installed your blown version of widows 10 they would be very quick to show me the door.
I completely agree, i do that on out of warranty machines but would not want to give a shop the satisfaction of a void warranty by wiping the hard drive
So now you're claiming wiping data off a hard drive voids a warranty?

Omg hahaha that's HILARIOUS.

Yes they'd not cover providing Windows of helping you reinstall if you blow away recovery partitions etc but void the warranty? Are you completely bonkers?

You realise that this is what every single company with bulk licencing does when they get new machines?

We wipe them do a fresh install, set them up, install apps etc then image them and I have NEVER had Dell, HP, Stone etc refuse a warranty because the OEM build of 10 wasn't on there.

That is the daftest thing I've ever heard in my 25 years in the industry.

Thanks for the laugh

Do as the customer asks? So you don't then advise? Besides doing a wipe & load can be part of setting it up.

Basically you don't care if your customer has the best experience with their new hardware or not. There's a job description for that kind of carry on its basically called being a technical courier, turn up unbox it, plug it in, turn it on, demo it & leave.

While I'm here. I have been pondering a new laptop for about 6 months. I want it to boot quickly but don't do anything intensive. Need to project videos and powepoints for presentations mainly so would prefer a VGA port but understand there are some workarounds with HDMI. Can't decide whether to go as cheap as possible or to possibly future proof by spending a but more. E.g the i3 7th gen lenovo with ssd and 4gb of ram for 330 from pcworld or the same thing with i5 8th gen and 8gb of ram for 480 Will I notice a difference with my needs. Is the 8th gen more future proof? Ie don't want to buy another laptop to run windows 11 or 12
I agree Naboo, I am also looking at the lenavo at pc world versus this acer going cheap at Tesco. I don't wish to game or do anything fast. What do the tech heads think about the lenavo IP320 down from £600 to £330 at PC World, 4GB ram and 128 GB SSD? Is the extra £70 a better buy for a faster processor and hard drive but less storage?

Hi Janet. See if there is any currys' stock near you first. I gave up after expanding search to 57 miles. Someone has posted the same model from ebay though. There is also a Dell outlet post that looks good. Think I'm going to go with the refurbished dell inspiron with 8gb 8th gen i5 and 1tb HDD for 322 (with code). There is also 120 GB ssd posted for 35 quid I'm going to add as a boot drive (not that I know how but I'm hoping YouTube will show me. Seems like quite a lot of laptop for the money.
