Its a low power variant. The 1.6GHz (2.6GHz boost) version is badge an i5.

shame why all manufacturers try to con us on i7 cpu? i7 should be only quad core not ultrabook edition.

To be fair, there's isn't much difference between them unless you do more CPU intensive tasks but majority of us don't fall in to that category, however, what I miss in this laptop is FHD screen, they all must put their act together and abandon this dreadful 1366x768 resolution, still voted hot.

agreed. the low power variants yield more battery life, which appeals to some more than power. it's 4th gen i7 so better for upgrading later on down the line. shame about the resolution - would have considered if it was full HD.

Intel decides what an i7 is, not the laptop manufactures and not you. Dual core i7s have been around for about 4 years. They were never quad core only.

There's really no excuse for those pathetic resolutions in 17" screens those days. Most 4" mobile phones on the market are full HD now.

And they're not far off the cost of this laptop.

Take it this deal isn't great then? Anyone recommend anything different?

I am looking for a laptop:

* Core i5 or i7, 4th gen
* 15.6 matte screen, IPS full HD. I really don't like reflective, glossy screens
* At least 4GB of RAM
* Any type of hard drive, since I can replace by SSD
* At least 2 USB ports, one USB 3.0
* Nice build (e.g aluminium)

Any recommendations please?

my acer E1-571 died after. due to heat/graphics card etc.. :). i wouldn't touch toshiba and acer due to their poor build quality.

The keyboard on these are pretty pap.

Google those specs. You might find a few but they'll be expensive. Do you really need an i7 if you're not bothered about a graphics card and only 4gb ram? The screen and aluminium will be the main costs.

Yes from your sole experience, acer should be boycotted. How old was it? Did you maintain it? Etc

My acer e1-571 is 2 years old and no problems whatsoever. They're one of the most popular manufacturers for a reason.

Cheaper by £10 at laptopsdirect unless I'm missing something. Looks to be the same part number.
And both have 1.5% Quidco available

I have already searched for a while, but very hard to find a laptop with a good matte screen. I don't need an i7, at least an i5 4th Gen. I don't know many people who actually need more than 4GB of ram, and having more RAM then makes absolutely zero difference.

How about this one: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Search/searchTerm/1091898.htm?cmpid=COJUN&catalogId=10001&cjsurferid=400200633122086407&_%24ja=tsid%3A11674|prd%3A1546795&storeId=10151&referredURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.argos.co.uk%2Fstatic%2FSearch%2FsearchTerm%2F1091898.htm&referrer=COJUN#pdpFullProductInformation

fully agree. i'm typing from my acer e1-570 which i got from currys for £300 about a year and half ago. still boots almost instantly, and runs fine. and i use it everyday without fail. and just by coincidence, i had a toshiba before that, which i ran for 4 years before upgrading!

i7-4500U is a poor cpu, my business partner has an Dell 17r laptop with this cpu and my 3 years old lenovo y580 with 2-nd generation i5 is kicking its a*** in most multimedia related tasks ( 3d objects rendering, x264 encoding, toolpath generating)...

would any of the 2 Acer ones be ok for my son for uni .. hes going to need office installed, won't be using it for gaming or anything, just you tube etc

The i7-4500U should be virtually the same speed as the fastest 2nd gen i5M processor. The benefit is that it's power consumption is less than half that of the 2nd gen i5. So in terms of efficiency it is way better, it also has new instruction sets that some software will be able to take advantage of increasing it's performance/W even more.

No... No.... Not Acer!

i got a lenovo z510 from amazon.de. it cost me in total 375 to get it here and i still get all the usual perks amazon gives like warranty and whatnot.
the specs are:
I5-4200m with integrated graphics
1080p matte screen
4gb ram
500gb hard drive
probably the best speakers ive heard on a laptop-JBL ones
usual bluetooth wifi etc
2xusb3 and 1xusb2
combo jack mic and headphone.
only downsides are german layout kebaord and no OS but you can still use it as qwerty in windows.

Terrible customer service, lucky if they work after a year etc. etc.

I don't know about benchmarks and cpu comparison websites but in real life use my Core i5-2540M is good 1/4 faster in programs such as CamBam, Vcarve or Adobe Illustrator/PS ( photoshop is definitly faster because of graphic card GT740 vs GTX660)

Naff intel graphics and a low end I7.

Why even bother with the processor if you can't throw triangles around for games?

Better off with one of those DELL £140 Celerons from the other week.

Chilly!

Just sayin: I had a nightmare with Debenhams 2 months ago when I tried to purchase a 4th gen i5 Lenovo from it. I paid extra for delivery on Monday (Ordered on a Thursday) and it never came. Had to do many phone-calls (to Debenhams and the courier) to ask where it is and nag a little bit - what else could I do? Eventually had to cancel and get my money back because it really was the worst that could have happened.

Crap company to deal with imo.

I am not sure whether we will get Acer Nitro series laptops over here in UK but they look very nice, they already have it in Germany and the reviews are very good.

Software developers frequently require a powerful CPU but don't require a fast graphics card.

In your experience.... My Acer is over two years old and gets used daily and still runs fine but then again any notebook which isn't maintained can develop problems and a percentage of any make will have manufacturing faults

I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos, 2 years old and with a 3rd gen i7 but pretty much what you want. Maybe look towards those. However there is no service hatch for the HD, so you have to unscrew the back!

Being a software consultant/architect myself I will disagree with you. My i7 3537u laptop is a great software/vm development machine, no fast GPU required.
