But you get system with more RAM and a far much more disk space - agree its a SATA hard disk and not an PCI-E SSD but bear in mind that the last few times that these were purchased from Amazon UK (via other threads posted on this site) they came with 160GB hard disks instead.

Seriously thinking about buying one - only thing putting me off is the colour, as I work in fairly dirty environments (oil & gas) so its going to get covered in dirt & dust pretty quickly so white is not ideal but still a sweet deal! :whistling:

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

I'm sure I've seen that one on clearance in Currys for £160ish (the white one only). I'll have to pay a bit more attention next time I 'm in there.

Was about to say this is a good deal, but then I saw it has Limpdick Linux on it.

good price

Which can be easily changed - other Linux distros are available - or even XP, as I have.

I bought this last time and can confirm mine shipped with 160Gb HDD

how do u change it to xp ?

Had one of these with same spec except the bigger battery and also WinXP for about 2 months now and I'm still very happy with it, well made, nippy performance, a good purchase. The bigger battery protrudes a bit but you get about 5 hours life from it. This is a good price.

...which is more than adequate for most users needs.

Let me guess...you have never actually used a decent Linux distro, have you?

I am thinking of selling my all but unused Mini 9 to get one of these. I find the Dell's keyboard to small and the screen is awful. It has a tiny viewing angle and the hinges don't let the screen go back far enough to use the machine anywhere near your lap.

Is this a sensible move?

Thanks ;o)

These are very good machines (IMHO) for the price. Voted Hot on this basis alone.

Its also the a150aw

rather than I presume updated a150bw

not sure what the difference is?

Hmm, Windows 7 Beta...just a thought and sorry but the Linux distribution being used is quite good.

It depends..Netbook choice is a very personal thing. Different Netbooks suit different people. Best go into PC World and have a play before deciding.

If you convert it to xp does this affect your warranty?

I agree - just make sure you do all the updates and enable the full version and there's not much you cant do.

There's guides over on the Acer Aspire One user forum - its a fairly straightforward process and they have some good guides in place to cover it.

Install XP, then if any warranty issues reinstall Linux provided on Recovery DVD

To install XP - search Youtube/Google Video for a stack of tutorials - you need a memory stick and a fair bit of fiddling to get it working well tho - it's not for someone who wants to open the box and just use it (and you need a legal licensed copy of XP too of course *coughs*)

I don't understand the hostility to Linux on these systems tho - they do what 90% of people buying one of these machines wants for less cash/less battery usage. If you have a personal issue with it - that's fine - keep it to yourself tho eh?

The SSD version of these machines seems best for Linux users/those who want the best battery life - if you take the HDD version (needed for XP really) expect much reduced battery life/slower operation in general.

Either way it's under £200 for a usable Netbook which is a more than fair price - the best netbook (the Samsung NC10) is £300 with XP included - if you have that cash, spend it, otherwise work out where you're happiest to compromise

Voted cold .....sorry
I have been thinking of getting a netbook for a wee while now and came across the HP Mini 2133 on Dabs dabs.com/pro…3DC for the price it blows the aspire out of the water, it even has Vista ( but it can be downgraded to XP by visiting the HP site) I got it today, I must admit with vista its a bit of a pig but remove microsoft office and downgrade to XP its a flyer :).........would have added its own post but i havent worked out how to do that yet

I could be wrong but i think the a150aw is the white version and the a150bw is the blue one, i could be wrong though

Upgrading to XP with an external optical drive and CD is incredibly simple, but it can be done via a usb stick if preferred.

Im now running a few programs (office 2003) and surfing and iTunes and its all belting along nicely, although i only get about 2 and a half hours out of the battery.

iTunes in full screen coverflow mode looks SUPER.

Steev

the only difference i have had setting up these systems over a normal pc, (i.e. installing xp on them) is that you need to use an external dvd drive. if you plan on getting a netbook, you`mm more than likely get an external drive anyways,so its a straight forward, format > install > install drivers = away you go

very nice machines, just bought one today for the little lad, got a better bargain than on here, but thats off a mate.

screens are excellant, and fold all the way back.

i like my asus eeepc better but they are a nice system, and look mint as well.

i was planning to get a netbook this month. but i think il just wait a few months for this new model made by asus

You're not wrong and Acer hs at least 3 different congifurations of the 150Aw - 2 with 120GB disks and one with a 160GB disk.

You would be very wrong there.

Must....resist....buying

i bought one from john lewis for 199 with 2 years warranty. Installed another 512 stick of ram and an old copy of XP i had lying around, took about 1 hour for both.

Its a Briliant machine runs smooth and works well. My only complaint is the screen which is waaay too reflective.

Ohh and battery life sucks. I just about got through a 2 hour movie

I installed XP on one of these a couple of days ago.

I followed the instructions on aspireoneuser using my old 1Gb memory stick to install from. It was a bit fiddly and the acer website is dog slow for the driver download, but it's now working fine and my Mrs is more than happy with the thing.

Regards

Kevin

would have been very tempted if it had xp.

I've had mine about a month now and very happy with it. The linux distro with it is fine, but since I'm used to XP, I installed that, and am thoroughly enjoying this cool piece of kit. For this price, I don't think you can get better.

Voted hot, this has to be a good deal. Be thankful no bright spark has tried to pre-install Vista!

Yeah but how much will cost us lot? :whistling: A 512GB SSD will cost a lot just by itself - agree that prices for SSDs are dropping but it will still cost a lot and this is a cheaper solution to go for, especially if money is an issue (is for me! :-D).

If your needing Windows XP you can pick-up the COA off eBay UK if your desperate for it - I've seen people buy cheap refurbished desktop systems just for the XP COA...just a thought.

Only catch there is that they'll probably be quite expensive off the bat, especially with the larger screen in place on their netbook range - its a difficult call to make, as in theory you could wait until February but you would lose this deal by then...of course the price may come down again to allow them to clear out the older generation one models just as is being seeing with the ASUS EEE PC 701/8G being sold off via Carphone Warehouse for £155.00p (there's a thread on this site about it).

Cheers, Scotty Boy!
