The much better Windows 7 has been available for £45 and will be on special offer soon at ebuyer for £60. Much better option than XP but involves waiting a week.

Linux is great if you can put up with it's shortcomings. If all you ever wanted to do is surf the web, write emails, and do word processing you couldn't go wrong with linux. Problem starts when you want to use other hardware or software.

Excellent deal. Heat added.

Note that if you attempt to upgrade the memory, the maximum DIMM size that can be installed is 1GB - there's also a very large and established user community in place as well for the Acer Aspire One Netbooks (I'll paste in the link shortly).

Edit - Here's the link to the website.

512mb is fine for browsing, music and other basic tasks.

Voted hot.

Good price but a word of warning, I have been through 2 of these in the last 3 months from Ebuyer, seems they have a problem where the screen just goes blank, even the guy i spoke to on the phone at Ebuyer said that its a fairly common issue.

Agree but I thought it prudent to post as I've seen members purchase 2GB DIMM for them (via other deal threads in the past) and wanted to put that over.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Hot deal, have one of these myself (bought earlier this year with Linux for 150 quid, upgraded to XP and 1.5gb RAM)

Did not know about a known issue with blank screen (mine has been fine so far) after a bit of research seems to be some people have bios issues preventing them from booting, there is an emergency bios reflash procedure.

If you happen to be running XP on yours, may be worth trying installing this.

]http//no…tl/

Will allow better power management when running on battery power, by allowing the CPU to run at half speed and only kick in the cooling fan as necessary between certain temperatures, certainly improves battery performance significantly on mine

My favourite AA1 app -Fan control - keeps it quiet ( you specify temp parameters

computentsystems.de/ace…ol/

also macles.blogspot.com/ is very good

Also if your touchpad suddenly 'breaks' try Function + F7

Win 7 RC is very happy on AA1 with 1.5Gb - If you keeps things 'austere and functional' I bet it will be fine in 1Gb

COCO

Does this have built in 3G? And what is the max RAM that can be installed on this?

For anyone still new to the original Acer Aspire One...

Upgrading RAM
Currently, all available models of the Acer Aspire (regardless of colour, HDD/SSD, 512Mb/1Gb RAM) have 512Mb hard-soldered on to the motherboard with only one available DDR2 SO-DIMM slot. There is a limit of 1Gb in that slot and so that means you can only have a maximum of 1.5Gb of total RAM. With the 1Gb Aspires, there is already a 512MB stick present in the slot and so you would waste a 512Mb stick in order to replace it with 1Gb one.

Some say that it's possible to put a 2Gb stick in the slot and just end up with 2Gb total rather than 2.5Gb. However, others say that this is not possible due to a limitation Acer has put on the BIOS that they supply, which results in non-booting. The Intel chipset in use would normally support 2Gb but it is Acer that have blocked us users from being able to do so. If anyone has any links showing that a 2Gb stick does actually work and the AAOne can boot then please feel free to share the link (^_^)

Add more disk space with SSD models
The SSD drive present in all Aspire Ones are 1.8inch IDE form factor and so can ony be upgraded with another SSD or normal HDD of the 1.8inch variety. The more common size is the 2.5inch and this will NOT physically fit inside the case of the Aspire One.

Add more disk space with HDD models
In the HDD models, the drive in use is a standard 2.5inch SATA type, much like those used in modern day notebooks and even the PS3. The underside of the casing on these models is different in that there is a *very* slight bulge in order to accomodate the slightly larger form factor. You can replace the drive with another 2.5inch SATA HDD drive of larger capacity or go for an aftermarket SSD if you want to spend as much (or more) on that than you did on the Aspire one itself :-D

How easy is it to do any of the above?
Not very. There are no easy to access compartments underneath the Aspire One to upgrade either the RAM or the HDD/SSD. If you want an idea of how far you need to go to do anything inside the Aspire One then have a quick scroll through this...

aspireoneuser.com/for…673

The other method of adding more disk space
The Aspire One has two Secure-Digital slots, one on the left hand side and one on the right. The one on the left can be used to expand the storage already present on the Aspire One, regardless of whether it's the SSD or the HDD model. Insert an SD card into that slot and the available space will be combined with what's already available. Eg your SSD is down to 4Gb free and you added a 16Gb empty SDHC card. Your total available space then jumps up to 20Gb! I haven't actually used this feature myself yet so I can't say for sure how the OS decided where the files should go first, fill up the SSD/HDD first and then overflow to the SDHC or some kind of mix.

:stocking::santa::gift:

Wouldnt it be worthwhile to wait for windows 7 to be put on these?

Cuddy, I saw your post from an older thread while trying to read more about netbooks. Does this info apply to all Acer One Netbooks no matter what model they are?

so is that one from argos worth getting?

will it play you tube clips?\

i need one for my 10 year old

The ZG5 models weren't available in the UK, so these are probably refurbs.

Plus laptopsdirect have these way cheaper.............

laptopsdirect.co.uk/Adv…ook

Go for the 1gb memory and get the one's with linux and put your own version of Xp on, much cheaper.

Forgot to say, why not got for the SSD drive, memory expandle by sd card. Bit slower but more reliable.

Absolute tosh!....Where on earth did you get these so called facts from? All Aspire One A150s have the Model ZG5 on them, nothing to do with them not being availabe in the UK, if it was a grey import then you would expect a matching foreign keyboard to boot.

Mine was bought factory sealed from Comet, underneath it has a sticker stating ZG5 as that is the model, it also has a AOA150-ab, as that is the version for the 512mb Linux that was sold, these units are either known as the A150s or the proper model name is ZG5 as per the Acer Aspire Series sticker underneath.

As for Laptopsdirect, they have dubious customer service, just google, they also trade under the name Acerdirect (and that has NOTHING to do with Acer at all) and offer refurbs.

In my opinion anyone interested in a NEW one of these avoids Laptopsdirect refurbs and buys one of these which I am 100% positive will be a UK specced ZG5 Acer Aspire One series A150.

If anybody buys one and wants a 7200mAh battery (lasts about 9 hrs) for one of these and a soft carry case for aspire one i have one up for grabs, only used for about 3 weeks. Will probably stick it on fleabay

It's such a top deal I've ordered one, to replace my ageing Compaq Evo N610c (which I currently have to turn on it's side and give a mighty whack to the HDD area to get to boot during BIOS start).

Looks like suitable 1Gb DDR2 can be got on the 'bay for about a tenner.

I have this exact one!
Just beware that Acers customer service, from my experience, is the WORST by far.

Mine failed to boot after 3 months (not even BIOS screen), sent it to Acer, returned after a month, sent BACK to Acer, returned after 3 weeks.

They were quick to bill me then after realising it was under warranty, did absolutely nothing for a few weeks.
VERY rude staff.

Where as I last year had an Acer 22" Monitor developed a power fault 18 months after I bought it, called them up, had my details and gave me a reference number, told me that if it was not a simple fault they would give me a new unit. Packed it up, had it collected next day by City Link, returned repaired (faulty power board replaced) under warranty 8 days later.

Can anyone knowledgeable please tell me the main differences between this one and ]this?

I want to get a netbook but I'm not sure if I understand all the specs. From what I understand, the other one costs around £30 more but have 512mb ram, 40gb more HDD, and 3G. Which machine's processor is better? I am leaning towards paying £30 more for the other one unless I'm understanding the specs incorrectly.

Processor: Intel Atom N270 1.6Ghz Processor (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2 cache)
Memory: 1GB *
HD Capacity: 160GB *
Display: 8.9" WSVGA (1024 x 600)
Graphics Card: Integrated
Operating System: Windows XP Home
Optical Drive: None
Networking: 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, 10/100 Fast Ethernet, 3G *
Interfaces:
5-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO, xD)
SD card reader
3 USB 2.0 ports
External display (VGA) port
Headphone/speaker/line-out jack
Microphone-in jack
Ethernet (RJ-45) port
DC-in jack for AC adapter

Where I have asterixed and bolded are the only differences besides the colour, so yes, 512mb more memory, 40gb greater hard disk space and 3G compliant, everything else is identical, processor and screen size.

No wi-fi?
