Surely It would be better to buy a netbook than this, it would serve the same purpose as the revo and portable?.

dont know about netbook , but in gadget show what i watch REVO has really good reviews, and they said that is really fast as well

The revo has nvidia ION which can play back hd videos and output at 1080p as well as an hdmi port (which sends video and audio), which a netbook does not

perfect for hooking up to an hdtv and hiding round the back. Its pretty silent when running and uses less power than a normal pc. Its more than capable for web browsing, email, films

runs windows 7 happily on mine with 3gb ram (uses laptop type sodimm 200pin ram)

rrp is normally £250 so good price and should include free Windows 7 upgrade

So would i be right in assuming that this plus a lets say a 19" monitor roughly equates to £310 will do everything better faster etc than a Samsung N110? of similar money

YES

Problem with this is that it is dangerously close to the Asus ION 330 nettop, which comes with a dual-core processor, easy-oveclocking facilities, an optical drive and is more or less the same price.

Not really seeing the advantage of this. Yes it comes with Windows but this should not be a problem for anyone upgrading from another PC.

i manage to import one from Taiwan, acer revo 3600, 2gb ram, 250gb hdd, specs are the same but mine comes with 250gb hdd, comes with Linux not windows vista, can be upgrade to windows 7 or windows xp. saved about 70 pounds too.. from uk currency price. mine arriving next wk.

I temped to get the asrock 330 its come with dual core 1.6 can be overclocked to 2.1 specs 320gb hdd, with dvd writer, all in small box, used upto 60watts when full use. cost about 250 uk pounds. maybe replace my current pc setup..

the only drawback I can see is lack of optical sound? would this just play audio through regular jack connection? If so no good for me unfortunately, lovely looking kit.

Lots of these coming out, I'm tempted to get one with internal bluray and it's an ideal HTPC.

I have been researching this nettop lark heavily and think i am going to go for the asrock 330, nearly went for the revo but the asrock is about the same price (give or take a tenner), has a more powerful processor, more disk space and the option of blueray for an extra 60 shnid. OK it doesn't ship with an OS but there is always round that isnt there......

Ideal for HTPC, which I assume most people are buying these for, hot!

I would rather get PS3 than this for web browsing, emails, and films. Also 2 Nvidia ION netbooks are being released this month. The price tag is a bit higher but at least you get the portability.

Could never use a PS3 as a frontend though, far too memory-throttled. In fact, for basic duties it must be said that the original XBOX can do much of what the PS3 can for a tenner, if "PC as an afterthought" is your aim.

Or buy the Revo from ebuyer:

ebuyer.com/pro…153

Doesnt come with an OS and has 1GB of RAM for £179.99, buy another stick of RAM also from ebuyer for a tenner making it £189.99 and install Linux or Windows if you already have a copy and save youself £35!!!

Free delivery too...just a thought

I went with ]this one from MicroAnvika. It has the dual core Atom processor, a 320Gb HD and comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse - not sure that is worth the extra £75 over this, but I could pick it up there and then.

Can you output 1080p and 7.1 sound through HDMI or play BluRays using xbox? Can You install linux on it? Can you use it as a freeview tuner? (PlayTV not included Not to mention latest games.

Can you output 1080p through Linux (and play full-frame MKVs) on the PS3?

And yes, you can install Linux on an XBox1, and use it as a FV tuner (MythTV plus any Linux-supported USB DVB adaptor -- I have such a setup in my bedroom).

Sure you can't play new games on it, but that's hardly the point -- you're not spending 230 quid are you?

The best use of 200 quid, if you are using the box predominantly as a HTPC, is to buy/build something like the above, not try to make a console do the same thing. The Xbox reference was simply as an aside -- you do not need the latest tech for the majority of an HTPC job, and if you need the HD side you're better off doing the job right IMO.

All this said though, why not just build the box yourself? Atom/ION boards are available sub-100 quid, the cases are 50 and who doesn't have a 500GB or so HDD, a couple of GB of memory and an old DVD drive kicking about?

Thats more like what I'm looking for - the bigger hard drive makes all the difference. I think I've found the same deal on play - not sure if there's anyhting missing in ]this one?

Any ideas exactly which RAM this takes? I have orderd the one from eBuyer, but want to upgrade the RAM

The only difference I can spot is the one from Play on has a single core Atom processor while the one sold through MicroAnvika has the new Atom Duel Core processor which should make it quicker

Has anyone got one of the duel core models? cant find anything online about these and what there performance is like

Dont buyt this, get the Asrock ION 330 for £230...

Twice the Hard Disk
Dual Core
DVDRW

Its a no brainer, really...
