The Revos are very good value for money, however shop about similar spec Windows based systems can be had for the same price.

Why not just buy a laptop for another 50-100 quid? Portable, more powerful, built in screen and a larger external display can be plugged in if required. Compared to £180 for a netbook it just seems expensive to me.

€200 is the price being quoted afaik

Wonder should I wait for the Win 7 version to drop until this price?

why spend extra on a screen if its going to be plugged into a tv all the time?
does this laptop you suggest have same spec?
you say better so lets see the 250quid laptop you'd use?
does it have 6usb ports and optical?
can it be attached to the back of your tv?
any more irrelevant comments?

The funny thing is, I am still interested in these. I like the small form factor and efficiency, my response was more rhetorical than anything, can't keep splashing the cash in these times :-)

Original Poster

wow the price has now dropped to £199.99

this deal should be hot hot hot!

Got the wireless version of this with windows 7 for just £20 more on fleabay.

Best thing i've bought in along while.

Funniest comment ive seen on HUKD in ages.

Thinking about getting one of these for my parents for a media centre. Does it have an EPG for TV like windows 7?

Damn. And I've just bought an AC Ryan. Oh well

If I could hide any more behind my TV I would consider oO

It actually made me LOL

this would be great with XBMC live. i have the r3600 and its amazing, but lacks S/PDIF port and a built in IR port. can always add them through usb, but it just involves more cables and linux terminal driver geekery

Having an optical audio output is a good idea on a computer with an external power supply (with an earth connection), because otherwise you are likely to get earth loops when connecting to an external amplifier, causing nasty buzzing noises. That's one reason why a laptop is not a good idea in this situation.

I got an IR receiver and handset for less than £10 from eBay. It works out of the box on 3610 with XBMC (running under Ubuntu in my case as I also use it as a proper computer) - no geekery needed. Optical is better than S/PDIF (which the the same protocol over a wire) for the reason given above.

I wonder, is this a decent deal for the extra?

amazon.co.uk/Asu…mtd

This Asus has 2x 3.0 USB ports, Win 7, a remote, a DVD drive (spec?) and +90GB drive space, for an extra 50 quid... seems like a fair bit more? Also seen some evidence on ebuyer that this model has an eSata on rear (whatever that's ultimately useful for - people seem to care).

Any good? Let me post it if so, ping me

I have a u2300 with hdmi laptop which I got for 250.00 HP DM1 . and that can play hd stuff. and also it can bit stream HD audio, this cant, so I would prefer a HDPC with a 5450 card, that way you have a true HD media centre.

why is it that when every revo deal comes on people start discussing media streaming devices. Is this revo a dedicated media streamer? Cold.

How powerful is the CPU on these things?

My ideal setup would probably be a laptop instead of this - playing HD videos/media on the one hand and then using the CPU for processing CCTV video feeds using zoneminder.

I don't think this will be up to the task???

What makes you think an ION2 can't bitstream HD audio?

But a u2300 is almost twice the processor of the atom, I wish they'd make a £200 revo with a u2300

ATI cards are usually pretty difficult to set-up with proper HD playback and HDMI audio in linux (for things like XBMC) though. Whereas nVidia cards are a walk in the park.

Its all about trade-offs with these type of PCs. I mean - I wouldn't want to leave your laptop on 24/7 and it has far less external ports. I would expect the fan to make quite a bit of fuss when it gets going too!

better than this for many people - excellent

canada16, dm1 cost 330+ now thoiugh i see your point. does fail on other points such as mountable, gigabit, usbs etc though.
didn't think it would have a power advantage in full 1080p and bitstreaming over this but am not so familiar with that config.
at least this isn't from scan eh.

It is. Got mine bolted to the back of the TV with dual boot Win7/XBMC connected to a NAS via Homeplug AV. XBMC takes a bit of tinkering to get the sound working properly, but it's well worth the effort. Only think that lets it down is the lack of eSATA.

I found that it was far easier to install XBMC under windows with one of these instead of live and im very happy with its performance , i was tearing my hair out trying to get live to dual boot with the network/audio set up issues

Cold from me never got mine to run any HD media well at all, tried XBMC with lots of help on here but gave up..Average machines at best but HD media player this is NOT by a dedicated player for that..

people can get all their media working on revos with single core and older ion - this is more advanced so should be better.
sounds like user error.
not saying its easy as i dont have one ..but rather than saying its NOT a HD media player, its probably more correct to say its not a player for YOU.
