Up to 3.5 hours battery lifeis this usual for a laptop battery?

I got a Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ a few years ago for around 450. Battery runs for up to 8 hours. In reality I can get about 6.

But not as thin as this model. Been one of my best purchases. Keyboard is great.

to be an ultrabook it needs to have a ssd not a mechanical drive , unless Intel changed the spec.

for example

of course not. There are Ultrabooks with AMD processors on it Ultrabooks" are a type of thin (20mm thick or less) and light laptop that are designed to offer a good counterpoint between high performance and low price. The phrase is trademarked by Intel, and the company is behind the push to make your next computer an ultrabook. Ultrabooks are also characterized by having low-power Intel Sandy Bridge processors inside, Intel integrated graphics, some have SSDs as their primary drives, and most feature design-focused exteriors.

I have the i7 version of this (bagged it for £400 new on their eBay page). Few comments:

Good:
-Lightweight : very easy to transport and the charger is compact
-Boot time: just shut the lid when done and it'll last for 40 days in sleep and boot within seconds
-size: you don't miss the extra inches (giggity)
-decent build quality

Cons:

-HDD not SSD
-No disk drive
-Screen isn't very sharp
-Speakers aren't great
-Trackpad is pretty hard to get used to
-Battery life 2-3 hours internetting

Overall - a good value way into the ultrabook word

Probably an s3-391 . If it is I wrote the guide on how to make it into a hackintosh to run OSX.

Cheap way to get a MacBook air

Substandard hard disk, not enough memory, no model number...

But it does seem to have a Full HD display? So with an SSD and a RAM update it could be quite a good deal.

I had a 3810t which I replaced earlier this year and it has been extremely reliable, only thing I had to replace was the battery but was under £30 for a replacement. May be worth checking ebay if you can get a larger battery cheaply

You can get a MBA for twice as much, not 'three times more'. It's always personal opinion on laptops.

This seems quite similar to my S7. Only problem I have with that is the awful battery life and this seems to have the same issue, though if you can live with that these laptops are awesome, especially as they're so portable.

If it had a touch screen it will tick all my boxes.

No single word about screen res.

No touchscreen I think otherwise I would have purchased (was on sale in argos at £450 previously)

Not sure that definition is accurate. And intuitively sounds really unlikely - why would Intel trademark something for competitive advantage and 'ownership' of the term and then let their prime competitor AMD cpus in on their action?

For your consideration: en.wikipedia.org/wik…ook and presumably more up to date that the 'definition' you posted which appears to be from unofficial sites in Jan'12 (before the devices were properly out yet)...

I was under the impression that at least at one point the spec simply required that it be able to boot in a certain amount of time, and I think had to be able to resume from S3 sleep in under a second, which usually required and SSD to achieve bit with windows 8 and a little trickery you can get away without it. Either way SSDs are so cheap now that this is a bargain even if you upgrade the RAM, throw in an SSD and put the HDD in a USB 3 caddy. And bonus is that it'll increase the battery life.
