Most people would be better off with a faster SSD rather than a massive 2TB HDD, and a faster processor rather than 8GB RAM.

This is a joke, right??

Whoo hoo a penny off.

also why does a 1.1ghz pentium need 8GB of RAM

1.1 GHz with 8GB RAM, this looks like a mistake in Acer production factory.

What a bizarre combination...

SAY NO TO 1366x768 ON LAPTOPS, AT ANY COST.

For the curious, this is an NX.GFUEK.017, with an Intel N4200 processor (cpu benchmark score ~2015).

Intel N4200 @ 1.1 GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM

The long and the short, as far as I've seen so far, is that it's a laptop Argos are selling, and as such belongs to the category of "laptops that are made to look good to the layman, but have horrific spec and aren't worth buying".

Their Q&A on all their laptops also suggests they don't know what they're selling, which must be fun when you need some help/support with the product.

Just looking for a laptop for a 7 year old to do basic homework, learn basic programming and a few games like minecraft and roblox. This, the A10 One from Very or HP from John Lewis?

Which laptop from JL? Link?

So with the 8GB Ram you can play lots of low end games at once... space invaders, pong, tetris etc... But make sure updated are switched off.

Even basic hifi equipment specs are beyond them, so knowing about something dealing with computers is far beyond the horizon.

True.

It's just a shame that so many people will be duped into thinking they're getting a good deal for their money when there's such better deals for the money out there.

It's a borderline scam. Laptops like this one are purposely spec'ed in a way which makes them look like they're good to people who don't know anything about computers (8GB of RAM, 2TB HDD, LED HD display etc), when they're actually poorly balanced and won't offer a good user experience.

It's a shame, but I can't see it ever changing with laptops or other computers.

It’s like putting a 1.2 litre engine in an Aston Martin.
they sell on the big numbers, but the processor and graphics are weak underneath.

Can anyone point me to a laptop around this price or less, with better specs? Every time I see one that I think is a good deal there's comments saying otherwise and now my heads spinning and I don't know what I'm doing anymore

Assuming you just want a general purpose laptop you want to get the best CPU and display you can find for your money; they're the two key components which can't (or at least can't easily) be upgraded at a later date.

RAM and storage (whether that's SSD or HDD) are generally pretty easy and relatively cheap to upgrade.

That said, you will have to compromise to reach the £300-350 price point; it simply isn't a large enough budget to buy a laptop which has good specs in every department without any further upgrades.

If you can find an extra £100 or so, something like this HP from eBuyer is much better value for money. It has a better CPU, a 1080p display and a 256GB SSD, which is likely to be of more use to more people than a massive, but slow, 2TB HDD.

Thank you so much that's really helped. Atm I have a Sony vaio 4gb 1tb i3 but it got wet so is a bit temperamental now, would've happily replaced it for the same as it's fine for me but they've stopped doing them so figured I might as well get an upgrade.
I understand the I3 i5 etc it's when they have different processors that confuses me as I don't know which is best then haha

Yeah, there's not really a practical way to fix laptops once they've developed water damaged related intermittent faults. Which is a shame, because you end up getting rid of a perfectly good looking laptop.

Try this website for finding out how good different CPUs are: cpubenchmark.net/cpu…php

You can search for pretty much any CPU and it'll give you a nice, simple benchmark score you can use to compare them (higher score = more powerful CPU). Use the i3 (whichever one it may be) in your Sony as a baseline and work from there. If you want another score to work from, the i5-3210m in the laptop I'm typing this on gets a score of 3810 and is perfectly sufficient for general computing despite being over 5 years old.

A single score obviously isn't an ideal way to compare CPUs, but it's perfectly sufficient for comparing the relatively similar dual-core i3s and i5s you'll find in £300-500 laptops.

Oh wow that's great! I've bookmarked that website so I can spend hours checking for the best one for my money you've been really really helpful, it finally all makes sense!

In the name of all that's holy, WHY is this hot?!?!?
