Seems quite heavy, but decent battery life (if true), and decent processor.

Just added the spec to the description.

It looks a nice standard laptop for people. Has most of what you need in a laptop to do everything from just surfing through to playing some games. Comes in a choice of three nice colours also - blue, red or purple.

OK, it is not state of the art but for the money it seems nice enough.

(Stands back and waits for all the dedicated graphic cards and high-end gamers to come on and talk their usual guff.)

these are great have set loads up.

When buying laptops, PLEASE do not buy such products because it says 'i5' or i7'. Some i3s are more powerful than i5s. If you are looking for performance then go for an i3 processor ending with an M, such as i3 4100m.
Please remember that most of the i7s posted on this site are only dual core and there would be only a slight performance boost from going from a i3 4100m to a i7 4510u, considering the price difference.

Proof that an i5 4210u isn't worth the price of a laptop with 4100m.
cpuboss.com/cpu…00M

HOWEVER, if you are looking to have a longer battery life then you should go for a processor ending with U, if you don't mind the price difference.

Not the same laptop. The one you have linked to is i3.

Your comparisons are true, but if the i5-4210U in this is powerful enough for me (heavy multitasking, compiling lots of code, MATLAB simulations), then it is for most people.

There are vast numbers of people who want laptops with that processor precisely because it consumes less power and hence you get longer battery life. That is why Intel designed, developed and marketed the chips.

We now live an age of people wanting their devices with them on the move daily but also have the need to be able to use their laptops for several hours at a time whilst on the move, on a train or coach, in a coffee shop, at the office, at the airport, on a plane, etc, etc.

People WANT these processors. Ultrabooks - which more and more people are buying because of this very reason of being able use their laptops anywhere for longer periods of time - tend to have these processors in them.

People keep coming on here time and time again and posting nonsense about these chips and pointing out that they are less powerful - that is THE point. Less powerful but also longer battery life. The people who post such things just don't get it. They don't get the idea of ultrabooks and mobility. They are behind the times IMPO.

Not meaning to have a go at you per se - it is just that I see this nonsense posted again and again on here.

I am seeing all the posts about laptops over the last few days. I am so confused about what laptop to buy. Mostly will be for normal everyday use and I am addicted to sims so it also needs to be able to handle Sims 4 smoothly. Looking to spend around £350 (not sure what o can get for my money. Staff in PC WORLD were useless.

Any suggestions would be grateful.

I always try to be as unbiased as possible and I did summarise your statement in the last sentence of my comment.

I was trying to put forward the point that people say they have an i5 in their laptop and it is quicker than a laptop with an i3 processor. But it isn't always the case now is it?

You cannot purely run off the label 'i5' or 'i7'. I usually look at the generation of the chip and the passmark for good comparisons. 99% of people actually have budgets so paying more for small upgrades such as a 10% higher performance CPU may not be as useful as getting a better graphics card, an ssd or more ram.

At the end of the day, it's up to you what you'd like to pay for but most people read the title and think "it's an i5, so it's better than an i3 laptop that I can get for £50 less".

I recommend any laptop gamers to buy processors ending with M (or MQ for i7 processors). This means that you can get an i3 instead of an i5 so you would have money to spare for a better graphics card or whatever other parts you are looking to buy.

Since the budget is low you don't have many options. I'm not sure of the demand of graphics for Sims but I would recommend this laptop.

Use code 4OFFHP for £335.04
store.hp.com/UKS…mp;

It has more ram than the laptop on this thread and a better graphics card. But it has a weaker/slower processor. On the bright side the HP laptop will play games better than the Acer. Free delivery too

there are so many CPUs its hard to choose, the simplest advice i would have for anyone is dont by a celeron no matter how tempting the price is and some of the pentiums to but not all, the performance will just annoy you and stay away from the amd e-series as well as the A4 if you care about performance at all

if you can stretch and get a ssd i highly recommend it or even a hybrid drive, either one gives a huge performance boost to any computer

as for suggestions for a actual laptop, keep a look out here, honestly you will get tons of advice before you even ask a question, i bought mine because of that same reasoning

Pray it never goes wrong. Acer customer support is pants!

Thanks for your advice. I really don't want to rush in a buy and regret my choice. I would prefer to stretch my budget a bit further and get something I will be happy with.
I will keep a look out on here

I'd just observe that at 2.5Kg, this isn't a laptop suitable for carrying round. Far too heavy for that. I know that from experience. My Toshiba weighs about the same and when I replace it, I'll definitely want one that truly is usable on the go ie much lighter.

Just lookingto get advice on best value for money as my head is a bit fried with i3\i5 dual core\quad core options !!

A processor, in this case is the i3 4100m, has nothing to do with the wireless network interface card. The wireless network interface card is what connects to the WiFi. The problems must only happen to that specific lenovo laptop you are referring to and has no relationship to the processor I have mentioned.

If you are looking to buy a laptop, and you do not mind the looks of it then you could get a custom laptop which you can pick the parts so you don't have parts that are known to be faulty.

As is not unusual with Amazon, there are actually 3 models on the one page, differentiated by their amounts of RAM. A 3110M, a 2020M, and the 4100M. There are several poor reviews of the 4100M, all complaining about the wifi and bt connections, whereas the reviews of the 3110M and 2020M are pretty well all good. Hence my comment.

The laptop with the 4100M processor must have a different wireless card to the other two models. There are many manufacturers of computers/laptops. You are only reading reviews from lenovo products which does not mean the processor is bad or has any issues.
