I guess it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but might help someone out.
This is not a gaming laptop, it is a workhorse that will do stuff for you all day, every day and provide many years of service. Oh...and you will not burn your knees or need ear plugs for the fan noise.

Logically speaking, that shouldn't really matter..

Logically speaking, it would if it was £450.

This has an older 7th gen cpu, the equivalent 8th gen cpu is 45-60% faster and it uses less power so your battery will last longer. If you can hold out for a couple of months there’s bound to be a deal on a laptop with either an i5 8250u or i7 8500u cpu both of which run significantly faster than this.

I'd sell the 1TB drive it comes with and swap it for a ~500GB SSD and you've got a very capable machine which will last you for years to come

The only thing I'd say with is that i7-7xxxU CPUs aren't that much faster than their i5-7xxxU siblings, they're still just dual core chips with hyper threading.

Something like this HP might be better for lots of general users:

No, it's basically useless for gaming. It doesn't have a dedicated GPU, it relies on the Intel graphics which are built into the CPU, so it just doesn't have the power to play modern AAA games.

I'd say you want something with at least a GTX 1060 for a 1080p gaming laptop, but you're looking at spending at least twice as much as this Acer.

That said, unless your son desperately needs/wants a gaming computer in the form factor of a laptop, a gaming desktop PC will get much better performance per £ and will be considerably easier to upgrade in the future. Unfortunately, the most rapidly dating part of a gaming PC or laptop is the GPU, which is also a part that is often not upgradeable in a laptop, so you need a whole new laptop just because one part of the old one has become outdated.

Hot!!

That's a decent spec for 500 quid. 1080p, 8gb ram, 7th gen i7. Bit bulky at 2kg, but not a show stopper. Hot!

Seems a very good price. I have a 3 year old acer i7 paid £599 still going strong and not slowed at all. Had a dell xps before that and didn’t even get 3 year out of it for £1000 , graphics card over heated and came off mother board. Happier with the acer will buy again and this seems a bargain

How much was this before?

Gaming laptops hinge on how fast their graphics are, this has slow graphics and unsuitable for playing modern high end games. It will be limited to old games and basic titles like Minecraft. You get what you pay for.

Unfortunately a half way decent new gaming laptop that can play modern games well will add at least another couple hundred quid to this budget, and that's tight as well.

This has an older 7th gen cpu, the equivalent 8th gen cpu is 45-60% faster and it uses less power so your battery will last longer. Hi, no, graphics card says enough I am afraid.... Obvioulsy it depends on the game - if you want to play angry birds it is fine But a 'Gaming computer' will need a much higher spec and especially a much better graphics card.

lol i7, this aint the 4 core 8 thread like the desktop CPUs, it's a dual core with hyperthreading. But Intel's confusing naming works as it's got people in here actually thinking it's a good deal.

Think I'm gonna go for this...... Hot

Shall I get this in stead of an all in one pc which was for £599

Hi Jo anne, This is a nice laptop for web browsing, and general office work.

It will be able to run a game like Minecraft, however it will really struggle to play any more demanding games.
A problem with this laptop is that it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.

Also, it is still over priced for what it is.
Furthermore, Acer products are just cheap parts put together, for a premium price. The build quality, and customer support is poor.

In my opinion, you should buy a cheap gaming PC, as it will be able to run many more games, at the same cost. Real gaming laptops are absurdly expensive in comparison to their much cheaper PC counterparts.

If i remember correctly the acer aspire e5 range have a spare m.2 slot in their motherboard, and this looks exactly like an e5, although it doesn't say the model name.

A quick look around turns up this: saveonlaptops.co.uk/ZX5…tml

It's far superior for games than this machine. It has modest graphics performance. To get another significant increase would add another £150 on top of this. However you would get a reasonable experience and it would play all modern games.

The alternative is a desktop PC which would offer more games performance for this sort of money but of course it isn't a small portable laptop.

I believe this laptop has a spare m.2 slot, so you could put a m.2 ssd in

If i was actively looking for a 15.6inch laptop i'd buy this in a heartbeat. FHD screen, 8gb ram, i7 (although dual core), 1tb hdd with spare m.2 slot - great.

No this isnt a gaming laptop, it does not have a graphics card, which you need for gaming. A gaming laptop is about £800 and above. Just search gaming laptop on argos.

True, or certainly true in the sub-£1k laptop market. It's a case of knowing what's easy and cheap to put right.

RAM and storage are generally easy fixes.

CPUs, GPUs and displays generally aren't.

My 2016 Dell 17"touch screen i7 7th generation laptop lasted 4 months before the graphics card over heated and had to send it back to dell to get new CPU, GPU, etc.. the works. Came back from repair and sold it on ebay :). Got a Medion replacement. Build quality wipes the floor with the Dell

No, this laptop is not good for gaming.
What is your budget ?
Just keep in mind that entry level gaming laptops cost nearly twice the price of this one. (Or around £750 during special event like black Friday)
I recommend to wait for tomorrow (cyber Monday) for the best price.

That's entirely down to what you need from a laptop; both are well priced for what they are.

Do you need more CPU performance? If so, then get the Acer.

Do you need 1TB of storage? If so, then get the Acer.

Does saving 50 quid mean a lot to you? If so, then get the HP.

Will the i5 serve your needs just fine? If so, then get the HP.

Will 256GB of quick storage be more useful to you than 1TB of slow storage which you'll never fill? If so, then get the HP.

I would imagine that the HP would serve more "normal" people better than the Acer (especially considering you're saving 50 quid). However, the Acer is well priced for what it offers if you need/want what if offers.

Rubbish man, I am not talking 2 years ago. It could have been £450 2 days ago.

Was very tempted with this for my Daughters Chritmas prezzie. But on reading the comments I'm not sure now.

I'm looking for a decent all in one PC for myself if anyone has seen a good deal. Was looking at the hp pavilion 24-b277na from John Lewis.
