Anyone have any experience with this. £500 is my budget and this is one of the first I've seen under with a dedicated graphics card.

Looks relatively decent for the price
Has a AMD Radeon RX 560X so should be good to play games at 1080p but might need to knock settings down to medium

Decent screen, cpu and graphics, and if you don't mind the thick bezels (I don't), I would say it is a balanced build laptop and a good buy
Are these the ones that have/had heat issues?

Don’t think these do, that was the Asus FX504 and 505 range. The Acer Nitros are pretty well regarded and nice looking machines. RX 560X is ok, runs a bit hot but got decent grunt - it’s ‘entry/eSports’ level as far as gaming goes really.

Just checked this out, looks awesome... Is there any similar with these specs for sub £400?

Not a chance.
Have the an515-51. Not going for another. Gets really hot quickly and that results in loud fan - had to reduce cpu usage to alleviate. Battery drains quickly too. Next one is going to be an Asus

Half the CPU of this, a quarter of the graphics and a weak screen.

The Ideapad 330S-15ARR that just popped up on here is much better than your link for less money, but be under no illusions it won't run games as well as this can.
I've been looking for a while around this budget. Nice machine but doesn't post to Northern Ireland...
Onciul_Pavel13/11/2019 13:34

Agree , but it's another machine under £500 mark

That in itself is nothing special. The Radeon 530 graphics may as well not even exist, it's extremely basic and barely above the integrated Vega on the Ryzen chips and built on an architecture from 2012 (or so). The RX 560X in this Acer Nitro 5 is actually a half-decent graphics card.

If you're worried about heat then don't buy the Asus. The AMD Ryzen chips can run hot, but that's part and parcel of the territory. Battery is never meant to be a strong point on a gaming laptop.

If you want decent discrete graphics then no. Sub £500 is a very fair price for a current generation, brand new gaming laptop. Sub £400 will not happen (unless you consider used), and if it ever did, would come with some huge sacrifices and cut-corners. Ryzen 5 APU with Vega 8 might suffice for light gaming but as someone else said, don't kid yourself, it'll be a massive step-down from this machine.

That's not bad if it's working well. Lots of laptops do the opposite and are silent and cool because the CPU is castrated and runs slow to achieve this.

Yes I actually have this laptop and it's absolutely fine for day to day use and some gaming as well. Like others have said it's good for 1080 medium settings @60fps
It's an excellent price as well.
The laptop is easy to upgrade with the RAM, HDD and m.2 SSD.

I went and bought it anyway, but thanks for the reply.

Is there only room for an m.2 drive or is there space for a normal laptop HDD?

Hi rocksm91 not sure where in Northern Ireland you are but it might be worth using address pal. You would have to pick it up in a Post office in the ROI.

There's space for a standard 2.5" laptop HDD/SSD as well. I put a 2.5" Crucial MX500 1TB SDD on mine.
It's super easy to replace as the HDD cover only has 1 screw on the back
Getting one of these delivered tomorrow for general use and playing older strategy games (Civ 5/6, etc). Any recommendations for first use (driver updates?) and any links to ram I could add to double this to 16gb?

Driver updates a must. One review mentioned the cores locked to something silly like 0.36GHz on an old bios. Mine wasn't the case but still updated regardless.

acer.com/ac/…b=1

GPU driver and bios from there. Others I got through windows update.

Yes you can upgrade your RAM to 16GB. I've used this one for mine:
amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1

Update your bios before upgrading your RAM just to be on the safe side.

You can also update your GPU driver straight from AMD because Acer won't release anymore updates.
