This has been very popular recently after ebuyers black Friday sell out. However I feel this machine is better than the black Friday deal, yes less storage but a better processor. Currently £295 at Amazon and £249 at ebuyer. Best deal I could find with such specs no silly codes like previous deals.

Why would you need an i3 processor for playing movies?

So you can feel a bit posh, knowing you've got a bit in reserve.

Depends very much on what the format is and what encoding type the movie has. Some encoding types require a bit of power just to decode them before/while playing.

Sainsburys are selling this for just over £200 and it includes a screen.

Cant see this on Sainsburys site do you have a link ?

Would you recommend this as a small pc and less for streaming tv ? I'd really like something I can hook my guitar up to and use fruity loops and virtual dj so being able to move it about seems appealing

Sainsburys don't sell computing electricals online anymore so I presume they were quoting an In-store offer.

Also, there are many models of the Acer Revo, and I suspect that if it has a screen and is only £200 then it might be a lesser one like this:

These are £149.99 in Staples (poss another 10% off - wasn't sure if that offer applied to these). In Doncaster, there was a board saying stock levels and there were 5 left on Monday at shutting o'clock.

I'm guessing that the ones at £149 or the lower spec Celeron machines. They are listed on the staples website at £199 inc VAT, so without VAT and with a 10% discount that you mentioned they would be £149. If you add the VAT back in its £179, which is the same as this one but with a much worse spec.

Of course I could be wrong.

No link I've seen it in two stores. I'm popping in later, I'll try and grab a picture.

Didn't really look at the specifications but you could be right. The price was inc VAT though.

this is the I3 version the Celeron one is a lot cheaper

Average cpu benchmark for this i3 is 2467.. Plex requires 2000 for each 1080 stream that needs transcoding. Is this a good buy if you want a NAS with all your plex content and run the Revo as Plex server?

thanks!

Great deal, I'd certainly get an i3 over the other lower specced models so that (hopefully) the CPU won't be maxxing out playing back HD video and other intensive activities. Having said that, some Celeron's are close in performance to some of the mobile i3's so always check the specs and benchmarks.

Thanks!
ordered.

I bought the black friday deal 2957u (£99) and it plays all my blu rays, some over 15gig no problem whatsoever on my 42" tv, using plex. Absolutely perfect for my needs and as this is the i3 it has more oomph.

Hey! Thanks for your reply, appreciate your help.

Just to confirm, are you running the Plex server on the Revo or just the Plex app to access your content with the Plex server being hosted elsewhere?

Have you noticed any issues with transcoding? Devices that cannot read the file (e.g. MKV) / Audio Codec .. Plex server converts this into a readable format which requires CPU horsepower. When I tested a 1080 file via my Galaxy Note Edge using the Plex App, audio transcoding (AC3 5.1) took place because I wasn't using MXPlayer/ticking the right boxes in the settings.. this used CPU power from my little i5 Dell XPS hybrid.

This is the only thing I'm 'worried' about.

I run plex sever on the revo but I only use plex on my smart tv, I haven't used it to stream to any other devices. My daughter has asked about this though streaming it to her samsung galaxy tab but just not got around to it yet. I will have to try it some when and see if this is a problem. Sorry not much help, still playing with plex really, not used it before.
Plex is a bit of a pain with subtitles as it uses them and on my smart tv there was no way of turning them off. I had to use some other software MKV tool nix to take the subs out, then it was fine.

Thanks lugsy! I've ordered the Revo - super excited lol.

The Android app is very good and easy to use - finds the Plex server quickly. Definitely worth giving it a go.

As for subtitles, I like them but I know others hate them.

Have you tried:

Server App > Settings > Languages > Subtitle Mode > Manually Selected.

Do you know the specifics of the celeron?

Anyone got this yet ? Do you get the keyboard and mouse too ?
Does Windows apps perform well on it as I'd use it for a mid range computer more than a media player

It will be the 2957u, Tesco had it for £129 with the 60gig ssd but sold out before xmas. I was hunting one for a friend after I got the £99 black Friday deal with the 1tb hdd.
Not keen on android, fire stick or apple etc as they are limited, this gives you lots more choice if using as a media machine on a tv etc. Kodi works fine on it of course and windows 10 works so much better than 8.1.
Like I say I use mine for movies, kodi and streaming the footy via acestream, browser and it's great. I was going to build one but no where near the price I paid.
