Great thanks to sparkzilla for the previous post. He has been very helpful.

If you're not sure of what Optane memory is, this video would help. It's the same model.

It's the same model, It's more than capable for that type of usage, even the i3 is quick enough.

It's the 2019 model right
Is this better than similar priced ryzen 2500u laptops?
Only 1 left. I managed to get one.. Happy days
Have some heat
Nearly bought last one....thank God I didn't.

Acer always has poor quality and things usually break down, often after warranty expires. This is no exception.

Poor reviews especially dim display, which is what we look at all the time.

The review you posted is the 2017 model not the updated 2018/2019 model
Not the same beast at all

This is the review you need
techradar.com/uk/reviews/acer-swift-3

I have the 2017 version with the mx150 you and it handles everything I throw at it.

The 2017 model is a 13/14" laptop

2018/2019 is 15"

Great piece of kit.

It has expired unfortunately. Heat though.
That thing will be dog slow with no SSD
Impressive specifications for the money

The new Ryzen CPUs are better than any 7th gen i3/i5 of similar spec.
Good deal. lack of SSD kills it for me too.
As an example, the i5 in the OPs laptop vs this AMD chip found in this £220 laptop:

They perform basically the same for a much lower price for the Lenovo. Sadly a lot of people see i5 or i7 and assume its going to be lightening fast but it just isnt

Nice one!
It's a good laptop - I've used one before and it feels nicely made and looks good. The metal is a bit flimsy and the inclusion of just 4GB RAM is absolutely bonkers when memory is so cheap and the rest of the spec is decent.

Less cores = less multitasking power.
Dual cores in 2019....no thanks

That's a generic automatically inserted line. The actual benchmark of the CPU is identical. You messed up wasting so much money on no power gains man.
But as long as it says i5 on it I guess you're happy
Edited by: "EazyDuz" 17th Aug
This is a fab latopp. I posted the original when it was £450, I've bought another one for family. Key bits for me are back-lit keyboard, i5, optane (can be replaced with ssd), upgradable ram, ips screen, minimum bezels and USB c

Totally agree.
Easy to upgrade to 8 or 16gb
Make sure you enable the optane memory to get it to boot quickly
It's disabled by default

Mine came enebled, but worth checking, it only starts to optimise the load times on the second run of an app / software

I didn’t even bother - I opened it up to add memory, removed the Optane disk entirely and added a proper SSD. No point in half-arsing this stuff!

Hi, can you please specify which benchmark you mean? In every single one I looked up the Ryzen 3 2200U is beaten by i5-8250u, i'm just a bit curious. Thanks.
I can't see the ryzen 3 beating an 8th gen i5 in any benchmark test. The r5 will be better in some areas such as gaming as the r5 and i5 are very similar.
Edited by: "sparkzilla" 17th Aug
I was well aware when I purchased this that there are better cpus and gpus out there, but my purchase was made on the sum of all the laptop parts and not just the processer. If people want to spend more on higher specs or if they don't mind about some of the features in this laptop, knock yourself out and buy something else. This is an excellent deal for the laptop and specs, no debate needed.

I second that.

There's no real reason for EazyDuz to insist on heat for his suggestion. He's just helping the community.

I think we can all help each other and that's better than attacking. We can definitely learn from each other - no body knows it all.

Question: Is an i3 8130U any good? I've always avoided i3's in past as they were slower than i5, but I hear i3's now are good.

There is another Acer, which instinctively I wish to avoid, but is cheaper than this and the Asus, has an i3 8130U and people say above that this model of Acer is quite good....???

Advice more than welcome, please

Agreed. Some people here take it so personally if you critique their deal. It's as if they have nothing else to live for. Very easy to get to them though for some mild amusement. I'd kind of get it if lots of heat for your deal meant you earn loads of money, but it literally means nothing at all

Just a bit of banter.
I've taken the post down now
Anyone know about the i3 8130U please?
Another un-favourable review of the Acer Swift for dim screen - although 14 inch - and poor battery life - I believe it's this generation of Acer's we are talking about here:

digitaltrends.com/lap…18/

Review is dated 2018 but it is an American website that talks about 8th Gen processor

"While the Acer Swift 3 is available with several different processors, our review came with Intel’s latest generation, the quad-core Core i5-8250U"

Decisions decisions??
The screens on these are terrible. Dim and yellow looking.

Avoid it. Waste of time. 8th gen i3 for laptops is still dual-core so offers little gain over Kaby 7th or Skylake 6th gen. The quad-core i5 or Ryzen 5 is worth the marginal extra.

It’s not a total waste of time, but if you’re buying a machine now unless you’re getting a particularly good bargain, you might as well get the quad-core i5 or Ryzen 5. The Intel 8th gen i3 brings nothing new. As quad-core is being pushed to mainstream, there’s no point in getting dual-core unless you don’t plan on keeping it that long.
