Okay, lets get the usual comments out of the way first

"Cold - it only has 4 GB of RAM and windows will run like carp" - It has 2 slots with a maximum capacity of 32 GB. An additional 4 GB will cost you approx £20/£25. Also, it runs fine with 4 GB, I have not yet added any RAM to mine! People looking for word, email and internet etc wont need to upgrade RAM.

"Cold - No SSD" - true, but it has the 16gb intel Optane drive installed, which makes a normal HDD much faster eg quicker boot time & faster opening apps. You could replace the Optane with a 250 GB M.2 SSD to as your boot drive for less than £50

The reason I posted this deal is I wanted a laptop with specific requirement, which this one meets. My must have list included

  • A back-lit Keyboard
  • Full HD (1080p) IPS screen
  • 15.6 inch
  • Very slim bezels
  • Large HHD capacity (min 1TB)
  • Not too expensive
  • Able to upgrade RAM / HDD
  • Metal body
  • Intel 5 or Ryzen 5
  • USB-C port
  • Good battery life (this has 10 hours)
  • Light (this is 1.7 kg)

I think this is a great deal. The Swift is the newest 2018 version with the slim bezels that are the same colour as the body (not like curry's versions that are the older, wider black bezels with shiny screen). I'm aware that i may have been able to get a better deal if i compromised on screen size or bezel size etc (the Acer Aspire have some good deals, as to Dell and HP) but i wasn't prepared to do this.

In the end, I believe, for this laptop with its specs, this is a reasonable deal. It's a clearance item, so not all stores will have them, but you should fine one withing a few miles of you or your work.

Model is SF315-52-52YX

A big thank you to the OP. I have been looking for a decent enough laptop for my daughter who starts UNI in a few weeks. Totally moth eaten with everything but I have learnt so much in the process. The spec pretty much fitted my minimum requirement after extensive research and the price was within budget. So here I am writing this review on the said laptop purchased from Bolton Bridge Argos.

Great laptop, looks good, solid, reasonably light and the main thing - brought a big smile to my daughters face. She can at last get rid of her old pink Samsung laptop.

Thanks Sparkzilla and all who have contributed to these pages over the last 6 weeks or so, I knew one would come up eventually

Shame, i checked Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham (places i work) and all had stock
Looks like a good deal as I had a similar wish list you had. How easy would it be to upgrade the Ram? It's easy in a desktop but I have never done it with a laptop.

There are 8 or so Torx screws on the underside of the laptop that need unscrewing, then remove the underneath and install in the available slot

Would this be ok for video editing 1080p files and perhaps 4k files ??

I'd suggest getting a gaming pc for that kind of thing, you would definitely benefit from a graphics card for video edits. I would also be looking for an 8GB ram, but you could fit that as OP said.

Agree, i believe Ryzen laptops have better built in graphics, but a dedicated card would be best
What is the screen quality like? I read it’s not great.
This or HP 255 G7 Ryzen 3 8GB 256GB SSD ? I don't need the hard drive space, so will the 256GB SSD be ok? (£100 less)

Its fine, the last version had a shiny screen which looked nice, but the reflections from light were rather annoying. This has a more matt screen, its not going to blow you away with vibrant colours but its better than some of the HP deals that's been on here recently. Its good from all angles and its bright enough, despite some reviews saying its too dim. I've never had a laptop that i can read in the sun! Curry's have 14 inch version of this swift on display (you can tell by the bezel colour match the body) so you can pop in and see the screen if needed.

Depends on your price point, the Ryzen 3 in the HP is slower than the Acer and the HP is slightly larger in dimension, but it is cheaper and with more RAM. If its just for general surfing, work etc, either will be fine.
Its only 4gb ram and no ssd

Lucky, as it runs like carp

What makes you say that? I've reserved one for tomorrow at local Argos, was going to add another 4GB RAM and swop the Optane SSD for a larger one....can you offer a better alternative? TIA.

Add 4gb ram and replace the optane drive with an m.2 SSD and this is a brilliant laptop. Heat

Wales.. carp?

It's a decent spec and will be better when you've upgraded the optane and added RAM

The thing that really put me off this laptop is the screen only tilts to just after vertical, I work standing up at times and needed a screen that tilted right back.
Would appreciate if any of the tech minded people on here could point me in the right direction for some ram compatible with this laptop for a decent price, thanks.

Good processor but it has single band wifi, crappy SVA TN display and plastic built. Add another £50, you can get a much better HP.

I've still not made up my mind if I want to collect my reservation at Argos, doing some research and some say can't upgrade RAM as it's soldered and some say you can....anyone able to confirm either way? Also reading that the Intel Optane drive negates the need to upgrade the RAM. Cheers

I'm the OP and have been using this laptop for a fee days. This is the new 2018 version (model 315-52) and it has 2 x ram slots, with each taking 16 GB (total.of 32 GB).

The optane drive is essentially a mini SSD drive that anticipates what will be accessed from the main HDD and it then saves the data In Optane drive. The laptop can then access this mini SSD, thus speeding up access to regularly used data.

I haven't upgraded the RAM and it's running fine for Microsoft office, Netflix, internet, email etc. I probably wont update the ram just yet as I dont see a need too at the moment.
Thanks for the feedback, I understand what Optane is, while reading up on the laptop I came across an article saying Optane saves you from upgrading RAM.
My usage is not heavy, a dozen or so Chrome tabs open and some other programs like Office,Notepad and Skype, occasional You Tube videos. I'm very predictale user so Optane might actually suit me.....its just me grudging handing over the cash I think lol My current laptop is an i5 with 8GB RAM and a 24GB cache style drive, similar to Optane paired with 750GB HDD, I bought it in 2012 so thinking I'm due an upgrade.

I'll m not sure it replaces ram, I'm sure it helps with minimising the bottlenecks, but I think most people will want 8gb at some point. The laptop is working fine with 4gb, but it's at 80% capacity. I will upgrade ram when I notice slowdowns. I have never used optane before, I assumed it helped with spending up HDD reads, but a quick search does suggest it helps with ram. I'd say buy it, it will do you just fine, but you know you can always upgrade ram later

I know, I had it next to my brothers 15 inch mac pro and it looked at home next to it. Dont get me wrong, the apple laptop is miles ahead if this machine in terms of performance, but in looks, I thought it held its own.

I'm trying hard to resist lol Even having done it many times before I hate opening a brand new laptop, much prefer the little access cover like on my current Asus.....currently I run just over 4GB in used memory so i reckon I would need 8GB, its just will I feel like its a £500 upgrade from my current laptop? Which I don't think is slow but maybe I'm just used to it? Also current one not a FullHD screen but I use my laptop for mainly text programs and browsing so I see a lot of comments about FullHD being harder to read text, especially if old like me lol

It's great for what I need if for. And ticked all the boxes. I'll probably upgrade the ram as its an easy enough job. Do you know if the 4gb installed is 1x4gb or 2x2gb sticks

The graphics card takes a lot of strain off of your processor when previewing video in your editor and rendering video. It's industry standard to use a dedicated graphics card, I'm not familiar with what they were talking about

This is what I read on the Dell website:

Adding 16GB of Intel® Optane™ memory to a system with a 1TB HDD and 4GB DDR delivers better responsiveness than a system with a 1TB HDD and 8GB DDR w/o Intel® Optane™ memory.

Is that true?

I have not added an extra 4gb, so I cant say either way, however I'm sure having 8gb and a 16gb optane will be even better

I read similar, I've mine here but not opened it yet....its replacing a 6+yr old i5 with 8GB DDR, 25GB SSD and 750GB so will be interested in this myself, I also read its 4GB soldered to the board and one empty slot so can only add 4GB if want dual channel mode? 8GB will be fine for me, I will just change the Optane to a larger 256GB SSD and use that as boot drive.

I think Dell are trying to say 4gb with 16gb optane and 1tb HDD is better than 8gb with just 1tb HDD. I'll try to find the link. dell.com/en-…mer
