before you shoot me down I bought the acoustic solution in car dvd player model 263 last year from argos when it was dropped to £60, this model also plays divx as does the 273 model but not advertised as divx player, i know because I have both.

I took the dvd player apart for some maintenance and lo and behold to my surprise the DVD player inside is branded as SONY, i couldnt believe it, but its true. So just wondered if Acoustic is just a badge whilst Sony provide the materials, a bit like owning a Skoda but driving a VW I guess. If it is then they have divx dvd players down from 25 to 17 cheaper than the tosh at tescos

Seems pretty decent for the price, ideal for hooking up to a PS3/360.

looks pretty good to me to.

Get in today for a free £5 voucher.

Also worth asking if they give a £5 voucher with a £50 giftcard - it hasn't worked in a while for me, but if it does for you (pick the youngest/greenest checkout person), you can knock a fiver off the price (buy £55 worth of vouchers for £50 first, then use them on this) & get another fiver voucher.

im so tempted.....argh hot

r these any good?

looks good, wonder if i can hook it up to my samsung plasma and play everything through it, sky xbox ps3 etc?

no they are cheap. do the job but are rubbish.
They are not made by sony. Alot of low end cheapo DVD players just use internal PC DVD Drives to read the disc... as they do not make thier own optical reading hardware and it helps cut costs. Thats why you saw a sony badge inside your dvd player, not because its made by sony, just because they have used a Sony DVD Drive. But theres alot more to a dvd drive than what reads the disc.

Seems excellent for £60! Has optical input too so I might get one for my xbox 360 =]

These are NOT made by SONY.

It is just the DVD drive which is made by Sony, or whichever was the cheapest drive available at the time.

Voted cold, mainly for the fact its a misleading title, but also looking at some of the reviews with buzzing from the speakers, looks like the unit is poorly insulated against interference.

Regarding the insane theory that its possibly a Sony unit....well firstly the OP took apart a DVD Player not an amplifier like this is, its assuming that all of Acoustic Solutions operations are rebadged Sony, which is a crazy assumption.

Also, just because an electrical device has a certain chipset by another manufacturer in means jack squat.
Sony CCD Sensors are found in Nikon SLR cameras, I have found philips chipsets inside Denon DVD players, Hitachi LCD screens inside Acer Laptops etc etc etc.

i brought these surround speakers a while back they are bad quality sound worse than many pc speakers i returned them and brought a phillips surround setup off ebay for £60 that sound amazing. the only reason for buying these would be to help you in games tell where things are coming from or you dont do ebay but the sound quality is bad!

They have a review on Which website.
I have an earlier set and they are good
Problem with mine is that the remote is broke and my amp doesn't have any buttons so I cant ajust the volume.

.... and anyway Sony don't even make their own branded DVD drives and players - most are rebranded Liteon.

you get what you pay for springs to mind.

if you have low expectations & requirements then "this sort of" home cinema system will suffice, but if you intend to have good quality (not saying top of the range) sound for your DVD/PS3/Xbox360/Bluray/HD etc, & also more future proof, then save up and spend a bit more, which is what I did, my true Sony system can accept true HD audio from PS3, nice.

don't think the AS kit is anywhere near Sony quality I'm afraid.

Can you link these up to telly?

ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS had one of there dvd players cos i wanted svcd playback back when u could not get a divx/xvid player thing lasted month and a half never again to associate sony with this brand thats priceless

Hot deal for scrubbers only.

I will never buy acoustic solutions garbage again. If you want decent speakers cheap look at the Logitech X-540 at Comet...they are amazing!

Good price, would be great for the 360 with the Optical input. Very tempting but a shame sound quality doesn't seem to be up to much.

I'm using these speakers for a PC & 360 at the moment, sound is good especially with Matrix Mode but with mine now the background noise goes from loud to quiet every few seconds.

It would be nice to have a Optical Setup though, can that be had for £60 anywhere else ?

Anyone know the Which? score btw ?

Yeah, i'm always taking my hi-fi apart for maintenance, you know check the oil level top up the battery etc.

The which score is 53% a bit from the review

The Acoustic Solutions DS534 performs quite poorly overall, particularly for sound quality.

This system does not come with a DVD player or a radio tuner.

It’s average in our surround sound effects tests, but below par in stereo mode when playing back audio CDs. Spoken voice tracks sounded fine, but when we played classical and pop tracks it delivered some of the worst results we’ve seen.

The speakers can only deliver a limited 3W output in surround mode, which will struggle in noisy surroundings.

Setting up is rather tricky as the cables are poorly labelled, and the instruction manual is brief. It has 2 analogue inputs, 1 optical digital input and 1 coaxial digital input but there’s no headphone socket.

If left in standby, this system will use a costly 20W of power.

Pros: None

Cons: Power hungry, no DVD player, no tuner, poor sound quality, difficult to set up

Thanks for that, saved me some money !.

Anyone know of any other Optical Setups around this price mark ?

I wouldnt believe a thing Which say.....look at the way they test their tv's....40% for picture quality, 20% sound, rest is for features, ease of use (later % is useful for morons i guess)...yes, thats right 40% for picture......so a tv with an abysmal picture can get into their best but list....lol....what morons which are.

The DVD drive isn't SONY anyway, it'll be Liteon. AIWA used to be a cheapo badge for SONY but I don't think they are anymore.

yes but its a great way for the op to get rep and get some heat on the deal, most people see the title and vote and dont even bother reading the posts hence why this rubbish is over 200 degrees! :? if you notice he still hasnt changed the title lol

ps.voted cold obviously!

I'm steering clear of this if it uses a Sony DVD drive you'd put in a PC.
Had a AD 7173A and it packed up after less than 10 uses!

I had an earlier model of this as my first 5.1 system about 5 years ago. If this is 3 times better than that one then this will be absolutely awful. I would avoid any Acoustic Solutions system like the plague. I predict that this will be an utter waste of nigh on £60.

Cold for me I'm afraid.

can't believe this is still so hot? people must be quite desperate/have low requirements if they're willing to accept these sort of home cinema system...

As previously stated, these are NOT made by Sony.

Honestly, some of you people think youre such AV experts when it comes to talking about packages like this.

In all honesty, you will only tell the difference if youve been used to higher spec models.

If youre a standard everyday user who just wants a simple 5.1 system, does not have a technically trained ear like most of you think you do, then this would be perfect.

I mean, for example, if Ive only been used to simple speakers from the tv unit, do you honestly think I would have the AS system then say, oh, the quality of this is **** or, hmmm, these wont sound as well as a 200+ system.

How on earth would I know if these sound as good as kefs or a mordaunt system if Ive never lived with them.

haha, some of you a jokers and I bet a majority of you here have a sub 400 quid system inc. an amp!

I have the DS533 version, it's ok but I cant use it as the remote is broke.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what system I should go for.
I was looking at Samsung "HT-TX35R/XEU which is available for £150 but I dont need a dvd player as I will use my ps3. Is it worth it for the surround sound?
I would like to buy a true hd system but I can't afford it at the mo.

Well if these aren't great quality can anybody please recommend some of a similar price that are compatible with PS3/ LCD TV etc.

TBH those are fair points. The older model was my starter kit and it was only as I got into AV that I realised how poor that system really was.

Have a look here avforums.com/for…ms/. A much better system (5.1 or even 2.1 simulating 5.1) can be had for about £150. Of course that is more than double the price. If people can hang on and save a for longer then these would be better options. An alternate would be some of the Logitech or Creative speaker systems.

Bought this about a month ago from maplins for £99.99!!!
Looked all over for it or somthing like it...using it right know with my ps3!

Argggggg!!! :x

Hello Everybody I cannot believe the fuss this post has created, I also cannot believe the amount of heat this has been given. I dont believe this system is made by sony, the point I was making is that I have had two acoustic solutions in car dvd players from argos and they both have SONY drives inside them and their picture quality is brilliant and to date Ive never had any problems with them. I would have probabbly paid over twice as much for a branded version so I accept you pay for what you get. As far as these speakers are concerned, personally they look damn ugly and i would never have these in my living room, I just thought they were a cheap deal that's all. Incidentally i am looking for a surround sound system and quiet interested in the Logitech comet deal for £39 but for now I will just hold and keep a look out, like others I also want better speakers for my 32 sammy panel and like Joe Average my ears havent been used to the Giorgio Armani and Ferrari of the world of speakers, so i would be satisfied with anything that sounds remotely better than my ****** tv speakers.:santa:

The fact he had to take it apart for maintenance in the first place raised an eyebrow, nevermind his bizarre claim this is an unofficial Sony product.:whistling:

What a trumpet.
