this would be superb if only they introduced auto folder sync

It would be particularly unwise to trust any outfit with the only copy of your precious files. Use this as one of many backup copies but make sure you always have anything you value on a machine under your control as well as on anonymous servers somewhere in the cloud.
Also, encrypt anything that could identify / incriminate you

totally agree. The main feature I like about dropbox is that it keeps a copy of deleted files for those unexpected emergencies (used it twice now to recover corrupt MS money files).

if you want this feature you need to get dropbox via dropbox.com

Not that good... Some time ago I was able to upload a lot without a problem, now it's impossible to upload even 100MB file - connection constantly drops.
Alternatives - dropbox (up to 10GB for free)
Idrive - up to 12GB for free
Nivio - 30GB free

as far as I can tell - nivio gives 10GB free - am i missing something?

UK upload speeds render services like these useless. I would be quite happy to backup some music (for example) that I don't necessarily want cluttering my HDDs but I can't.

and yes, I wouldn't trust my personal files to any company like that.

Just set up a gmail account and use GDrive

I think dropbox is the best free service there is. If you invite people it gives you Both 250 MB to a 10 GB limit.
