Very nice spec indeed, probably the best bang to the buck to date - with possible exception to Dell offers (well.. some of them).

The only thing that would stop me buying is the fact its Advent. Advent have good tech support but the build quality is ****. Plasticy crap build.

Maybe this model is diff but thats what I have experienced.

Well the price point is right edi ;-) It has all the right bits in for the price doesnt it, gotta be a bargain:thumbsup:

Thanks for the feedback greyster & MikeT

Advent is DSG's own brand, I think.

Nice lot of RAM and DVDRW Ideal for home office applications and the like :santa: Thanks for the find edi :santa:

I think you're right that Advent is exclusively theirs too.

Check how flimsy the USB ports are at the back and the DVD drive face (the bit you can see when its closed). Try wriggling both parts to see how solid the build is.

Close and open the monitor screen a few times to see if the screen flickers a lot.

is it wireless enabled so it doesn't need wires?sorry im a technophobe and need as less hassle as possible:)

You'll still need a wireless router/modem, if you don't already own one:santa:

can u recommend one dave?its for my daughter as i know nothing about pcs.is there one on the currys site that will be ok ?
:santa:

The only downside is the small hard drive and intergrated graphics (for a windows media center laptop). Very good price though all the same,

Steve

how does this centrion processor compare with others i.e pentium 4 , dual core , celeron etc and could the graphics card be easily upgraded?
cheers

If you buy this you will also get Windows Vista Premium edition free when it comes out (subject to a postage charge).

The centrino isn't a processor in itself - rather its teh Mobile Pentium, a wireless lan and an intel chipset all in the same machine.

All together they are branded as Centrino.

They are good processors and the price above is good - it's somewhat dated but nonethelss good value.

Graphics can't be updated but you may be able to dedicated extra RAM to it.

It will play DVDs etc fine but no good for gaming...

thanks di, might wait for cheaper core 2 duo then

Tiscali should be through a phone line, not cable, so you probably have a modem from them. You can buy a router or be done with it and get a modem/router combined. Netgear DG834G is a reliable and easy to setup model amazon.co.uk/Net…ics You should be able to find this in store at Currys, don't know the price.

Thanks everyone .i know it's hard to believe anyone could be so dense but when it comes to pcs i am!!:santa: :santa:

Anyway just ordered it complete with a router and a specified delivery day and time, all for £409.Have gone thru quidco as well but i wont hold my breath on that 1!!thanks everybody for your help:santa: :santa:

It's Pentium M - which is not really comparable with other types in simple ghz. Like Core2 Duo processors, it's a lot faster than the raw figure suggests, and a 1.7ghz machine will be quite nippy. Not dualcore though, since that eats battery life.

Basically, unless you want to play games, or do something else very hard on a computer (3d modelling? massive databases?) a 1.7ghz Pentium M is more than plenty.

are these laptops any good? it seems like a very reasonable price but i have never heard of this make? what is the difference between this and say a toshiba with similar specs??

also any 10% currys codes that can be doubled up with the RSA one?

cheers
adam

I'd strongly recommend this computer to anyone except mobile gamers (who need better graphics card; the processor's still more than suffices IMHO since most games don't take advantage of dual core and won't for some time), and people who want to edit video on it (or re-encode their dvd collection into DivX/XViD - waste of time I think since you can download a copy quicker (as long as you already own a proper copy of the DVD and just want a copy on your computer to watch anywhere, I don't think there's anything wrong with DLing movies.
Piracy on the other hand... well, I own a DVD Shop so I would say that!!

ANYWAY, the only thing you might find is a bit lacking is build quality, so as someone said on the last page, give some thought to how careful you are with your things, if you're quite rough with stuff after the newness wears off (after a month or less!) you'll want something better built, I'd recommend a Toshiba (so reliable you get your money back and a repair/replacement if it breaks down!

G2G!

Thanks for the extra info guys and Welcome to HotUKDeals all new members here too :santa;

For comparison:

A Duo 2 Core Advent of similiar spec = extra £130 after discount:
currys.co.uk/pro…548)

Better built machine with Duo 2 Core and some other upgrades like bigger HDD:
currys.co.uk/pro…358 (extra £180, after discount)

I think this one's the best deal personally; I'm careful with my stuff, and it's still a very very high spec for the price

Anyways G2G!

I live with two girls who have an advent. They take it out the house perhaps once a term, it is cared for and I am not pleased with the build quality (being their IT monkey for IT issues).

2 out of 4 USB ports no longer work because the plastic part of port has snapped off on both laptops ... they perhaps plugged something into it once every day for 9 months - with other manufacturers you'd probably have to do that 4 times a day for about 10 years before that happened.

The face on the DVD drive isnt even part of the same mould, it is 'clipped' on and therefore comes off easily if you 'push' the drive back in as many do, as opposed to pressing the button.

Screen flickering when you move the tilt the screen - never seen that happen before although apparently common to advent (ref: google - reviews).

Also integrated graphics chip inside began to rattle, had to be returned to be soldered back on.

Laptop churns out loads of heat and at times can not be placed on lap because it gets too hot. The last thing you want to do is enjoy the summer sunshine with this baby on your lap.

Type in advent laptop poor quality build and read reviews repeating what I have said.

On the plus side, this one actually has a wireless adapter plugged in, so if you are going to rarely or even better - never - going to use the USB ports, you got one less problem to deal with.

Bottom line -

when paying for a laptop with a good spec, factor in the build quality to the price.

you guys should have got the toshiba or the compaq for £405 with codes instead. centrino 1.7ghz aint the best, i had a centrino 1.6ghz, not the quickest!!! its only £45 more for the others, i like my nice new amd turion 64 x2 1.6ghz:) got vista x64 ultimate on it:)

Yeah dude, we should also have BOUGHT Microsoft shares when they were 2 to a penny:p

I actually think centrino is good enough, after switching to core duo recently. Just remember to add loads of RAM if you're a heavy multi tasker like me 1GB RAM should be fine, but go for 2GB if you can. :P

:giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

Update: I had bought one of these, but then I got a Toshiba Solo Core Centrino 1.87GHz with 512MB DDR2 533MHz RAM, 40GB HDD, Superdrive (writes anything except Blu basically), TruBrite 15.7", SRS TruSurround (which sounds excellent) and 'cos it's Toshiba the build quality is much higher

for £390 (an extra £20) from a rich guy (met him in his £5 million plus house in Holland Park Road!! (where all the gigantic houses owned by Saudi Princes and Executive Directors are!), complete in box unused with Currys receipt dated about 2 months ago (would take it back but he bought it on his CC lol).

So I phoned Currys and cancelled the Advent.

Looks like there's some Duo's around this price all of a sudden though (like the deal Edi posted) but at least I've got a Tosh and this keyboard is soo nice (running Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 (both Beta's)) too, need more RAM though (please contribute to my thread trying to get it cheaper ).

as predicted i am having trouble seting up the laptop with the router etc.i have got the net sorted on it and thought i had sorted my router and wirless adaptor, but it isn't showing as wireless connected.:oops:Just to add to anyone buying from currys the helpline people don't always know what they're talking about. They sold me the wrong router despite asking me lots of questions about my isp etc etc on the phone.i took it back today and luckily they exchanged it qithouit too much hassle, but as a pc dunce i didn't know what i needed and they assured me they knew and ordered the correct thing.several temper tantrums later and hopefully i might have a wireless network soon
